Hi, I’m Nico Murillo, and I recently got laid off from Tesla on 4/15/2024. I was a Production Supervisor, and was with the company for 5 years. I started in 2019, as an entry level Production Associate. After getting laid off, had to make the decision to sell the house. I decided to sell most of my belongings and move into my 2021 Tesla Model Y. When I worked at Tesla, I slept in my car on work days to avoid my 3 hour round trip commute time from Lathrop, Ca to Fremont, Ca. I created a platform in my trunk with the use of Michaels, Home Depot products, and a soft mattress, where I now call my home. Living in my car enables me to save money, and invest it. I am documenting my journey to financial independence by 2029. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to look into financial independence. Maybe one day i'll see you at GNC in Stoneridge Mall Pleasanton, Ca. I currently work there now as a supplements store manager. I am off Sundays and Wednesdays though.

I lived in my car for a year while paying off my student loans. You can do it. 1) Get a membership at a gym that offers more than just a shower. 24-hour super sport or similar, so you can access a pool, basketball courts, etc. The goal is to stay socialized and active. 2) Live from your car, not in it. Do your best to strictly only be in your car to sleep and cook occasional meals. Having that mindset makes it a lot more bearable. Dont feel bad for sitting down at a restaurant to switch up the routine. 3) It sounds like you have a solid support system. Try to visit them often and get some sleep outside your car. If that's not possible, a hotel/airbnb here and there never hurt.

If things get worse, you can always move to a different state and buy a tax lien or a really bad looking foreclosure and live in your car there. The foreclosure might not be livable, but at least you can get the bathroom working and get a bigger refrigerator and save money. You don't have to drive around neighborhoods to find a safe place to park.

Renting a room will allow you to save money while maintaining a decent quality of life. Most room rentals provide access to a furnished room, private bathroom, kitchen etc. Savings and working toward a goal does take sacrifice…just make sure it is not at the cost of your mental sanity or extreme inconvenience.

Rooting for your man! One thing, though, why dividend stocks? Why not hold VOO and pay yourself a dividend, if you will, when you need money? One would think that would be far more tax efficient. I guess business development companies might be a good option, but I haven't looked into it too much because my legal residence is in Japan and the government here doesn't let me buy BDCs, so no point into putting dozens of hours of research into a financial product I'm not allowed to own.

Savings and early retirement aside, statistically, unhoused people have a lower life expectancy due to various factors. I don’t think that benefit outweighs the potential effects of it on your physical and mental health. I also personally don’t think living unhoused (not homeless) in California is the right approach. You should consider moving to another state with a lower cost of living and save that way instead. It’d be way easier than living in the Tesla in California.

If you invest 300k that has a 5% dividend, isn’t that across the whole year ? So it’s 15k per year and not per month? I thought dividends for stocks are calculated on a per year basis not per month? Even if it’s paid monthly the 5% benchmark is across the whole year.

Nico's parents here...dividends are calculated on a yearly basis...however the distributions can be received on a monthly, quarterly, semi annual, or yearly basis depending on the particular stock...hope this helps

Nico, I get the challenge, and I sort of see where you're coming from. That said though, you're living in a vehicle that's value is plummeting by a good three figures every month. Not only that, but it's a pile of dead capitol doing nothing. Wouldn't you be better off trading in the Tesla on a good used van that has stabilised in value and invest the difference in index funds, blue chip single stocks with good yield, bonds or even a term deposit? You've got to be dropping near $10k per year in opportunity cost and depreciation! I get half your logic, but the other half doesn't add up. For someone living in their car, you're doing it in just about the most expensive way possible. Anyway, I wish you luck and hope this journey brings you to a point from which you can move forward.

Depreciation means nothing until you sell. I would keep the paid off Tesla, drive it until the wheels falls off. A good used low mileage van will cost at least $40k like a Sienna. I would not buy garbage like a Dodge van. Plus gas van costs more to run on gas, maintenance……….
