Love the stories these old cars can tell. Once bought a hand-painted gold Vauxhall Chevette. There was a big block of hardwood in the engine bay and another in a large pool of water under the drivers seat. I asked the then owner why the wood was there only to be told that they had been throughout his ownership and, as the car consistently passed MOT with them in situ, he didn’t want to move them “just in case”. Tongue in cheek, I asked whether he had ever yacht varnished the wood under the drivers seat to protect it from the water there. He looked bemused and said he hadn’t ever felt the need to preserve the wood. I bought the car and it was great. Full of character that Chevette and filled a specific need at the time to avoid taking my Subaru Impreza to some dodgy places.

Yes, me too. The wet caused an (expensive!) g-force airbag sensor under the driver's seat to fail. Common problem, caused by the narrow slit opening of the rubber grommet on the end of the pvc drainage tube from the sunroof blocking with silt and eventually popping off the tube, and then flooding the cabin floor instead of draining the rainwater out under the front wheel arch. VW made that rubber grommet thing semi-closed, kind of slit-shaped, in an attempt to stop insects crawling up and blocking it, but it caused this other problem. Usually an easy fix with a length of strimmer line.

@@jamieeedden777 Cars like this are worth what people are prepared to pay for them in the end. I'd jib at a grand as well, but it's tidy regardless of age and somebody looking for a steady year of motoring could do worse once the MoT bits are sorted. I had a 2007 Renault Clio (owned from new) that I loved, ran near 200k miles, planned to keep until 2030 when I might retire, little niggles on the MoT most years but basically rock-solid - and in the trade probably worth a lot less than my own regard for it...and then I smashed it last year. Gutted doesn't begin to describe, but finding a replacement motor in a minefield of "is it too old to be reliable, or too new to be affordable" was the biggest bugger. Something like this could be a bit of a diamond in the sand to a canny buyer.

I've had 6 MK4 Golfs over the years and a Bora so have done a lot of miles in them. Great daily driver cars if you get a good one. They weren't too much from VW/TPS new but I' m not sure about cost/availability now.

I stripped mine down and rebuilt it. Not too hard. Maybe I was lucky The shaft and the tube it runs in seize together because the o-ring seal fails and lets rainwater in. Now I add a line to my regular service schedule that says I must put a few drops of oil on the spindle so that it runs down and keeps the spindle lubricated in its tube. Wiper failure is serious. It will happen when it's pouring with rain, and then you simply cannot drive the car until the rain has stopped. I'm confident that a few drops of oil from time to time can stop that particular failure ever happening again.
