Sometimes I play records during home parties. And sometimes at these moments I get a little drunk. One day, when I just decided to listen to one of my favorite and rare records, I found a huge scratch on it along all the tracks on the side A. Apparently, I made this scratch myself when I was drunk at one of these parties. Thank God, the scratch did not affect the sound in any way, but I was still in shock. My advice - never play your records when you drunk.

What I learned, about 45 years ago... NEVER lend your records to ANYONE! I had a copy of Monty Python's Matching Tie and Handkerchief, the one with double grooves on side two. When I finally got it back, it was horribly scratched. I've never lent out records ever since.

This happened to my most beloved record... I was playing The Pale Empreror's Deluxe Vinyl Edition, which I found after some months of trying to get a mint copy of it. So I went home and decided to play it, placed the rercord, took all dust away from it, and I was about to drop the needle when my mom walked into my room in a hurry and accidentally hit the desk, which made me freak out and drop the needle on the record at 2-2,5 centimiters away from it... I just stood there as the music started playing, and decided to drop the needle on the 1st track, one I got to track 2, y hear this loud af pop, that was continuously repeating itself over and over again... That is my favourite record ever, pressed on gorgeous 180g white vinyl, just getting absolutely wrecked... I was dead inside for 2 or 3 hours after that.

Modern turntables usually come with a 'locking clip' to hold the tone-arm in place. It's good practice to get in the habit of always using the clip every time you want to flip or change a record and only open it when you're ready to put the needle down to play. Cue-up levers can be fixed/adjusted. There's usually a screw in the middle of the banana-shaped thing under the tone arm that you can adjust to where you like it.

Here’s my story. So my mum knew that I really wanted a turntable, and saved up to buy me my first record player, which was a really good, brand new AT-LP7. I fell in love with it. Unfortunately a couple months later I clumsily dropped the dust cover onto the tone arm, which caused the tone arm to skim over the platter, damaging the stylus, and creating multiple chips in the smooth matte black surface of the turn table base. I was so gutted, that I couldn’t look at my turntable for a month. To this day, every time I spin a record I beat myself up about it. But I eventually moved on, and I regained my love for it. Now every time I move the dust cover I’m extremely cautious. Well I guess I learnt my lesson, and will never make that mistake again!

Ja, fortunately most of the superficial scratches are barely audible, but your misfortune is deeply shocking! Sometimes it’s better to have an automatic turntable additionally, as you are with friends and can’t handle your records with care as you normally would do. Greetings from 🇩🇪

German here as well. I just recently learned that "kaputt" is actually more common in the English language than you might be aware of. Sure it's not used as frequently as words like "broken" or "damaged" but I have heard it being used in English sentences quite a few times now. It seems like "kaputt" is used as a more comedic replacement for the other more common synonymes. And I also believe that it is used if something is very badly damaged. Like even more than "wrecked" or "destroyed". I was just as surprised the first time I've heard it.

I had the same deer in headlights feeling just the other day. I just got a new turntable, leveled the tonearm and calibrated the stylus. I had also built this thing to go over my TT so that it's fully protected from my cats. At this time, my cats were pretty hyper and running around so, just as you were, I was in a hurry. I always use the antistatic brush before playing so I move the tonearm over the record not realizing I hadn't lifted the cue-up. So I moved it over dropping it right onto the record and it bounced twice. Just "Pop" "Pop" right out of the speakers. I felt my stomach drop. THANKFULLY my record is fine! And the new set-up sounds great. But not a noise I ever want to hear again lol I was supposed to be relaxed listening to some Bill Evans but ended up anxious the whole time hoping there was no damage. I remember i went to a record store and found an extremely well preserved US 1st Pressing of Let it Be. I played it on the store’s turn table, but the store didnt have a lever to lift the stylus up. When I was finished listening, I tried lifting the lever up. I am a naturally shaky person, and so the stylus ended up slipping. The stylus made a fresh, clean “ZIIIP” sound and I watched a new, fresh white scratch form as it went from the last track to the run out. I was extremely shocked that nobody heard it, so I immediately put it back like it was nothing. I dont know if anyone knows about it to this day, besides the unfortunate lad who probably bought it with the scratch there not knowing he could’ve gotten it a week earlier when it was still scratch free.

I find when I use the cueing lever on my Rega RP-1, the tonearm always drifts off from where I placed it as it lowers. It's literally just so much easier to be careful and precise doing it manually. I still use it for taking the needle off again. Nothing disastrous has happened yet. My worse mishap was when I dropped an inexpensive, very common 90s house 12" and it bounced against the sharp corner of the table my turntable was sat on. A similarly painful experience, and left some noticeable marks, but absolutely no damage to the audio. I'm just very lucky I guess.

My kid's play carpets produce much of static electricity. So when I touch the tonearm it often "discharges" my finger with a spark. And I reflexively twitch my hand, no mater whether I expect it or not. Thankfully, I always use the tonearm lift lever for picking up the needle from the record, so, even being jumping across the record, the tonearm does not touch it. But when it comes close to a record's center, it get dropped on it, so the stylus might be damaged obviously. So, my method of avoidance of this is touching the tonearm near its attachment point first, where it is almost impossible to get the tonearm moving with the touch, before touching the shell handle, in order to make sure, the static charge gone away. Hope, this might be helpful to others)

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad you could get a replacement! I'm sure it was a horrifying moment. When I set up my current turntable (Pro-ject Debut Carbon, about 7 years ago), I didn't set the tracking force right, and when I played (possibly New Order's True Faith 12" single) the first beat on the album sent the arm up into the air, luckily I was right there and managed to stop it from coming down hard on the surface, so no damage done..(whew)....I was sweating it for a moment until I realized I hadn't set the downward force...lesson learned. One other horror story everyone should be aware of, I recently picked up a copy of Depeche Mode's Violator, new in shrink from a local store. Beautiful copy, but there was a ugly vinyl burr from the spindle punch out that came loose in the sleeve, and it put an ugly scratch down the entire side 1. The store had no replacements in store or in their warehouse. Luckily it only pops in a couple of spots on one song (and Rhino has been nice enough to tell me that they will look for a replacement for me). But lesson learned : always check your record sleeves!

I _almost_ scratched a record. I had "The Day Is My Enemy" by The Prodigy and played it on a cheap turntable. It took me 5 mins to realise it was looping - I thought it had a scratch so I bought a replacement. A few months later, my dad found an old, automatic record player in the loft and said I could have it. The counterweight was broken and the start/stop button would stick (EDIT: The queue up lever fell out, so there was no way for me to manually drop the needle onto the record). I put my "scratched" record onto it and hit the start button. The needle dropped and scraped right across the record making a horrible noise as it did so. I could see a visible spiral scratch along the whole length of the album. A few months after that, I bought a new turntable (An AT-LP120XUSB) and played the same "scratched" record. It played perfectly. I now have two copies of an awesome album.

I’ve had a couple of similar moments but luckily I haven’t caused any noticeable scratches or damaged my stylus.

I recently scratched one of my favorite records, and I seriously considered breaking my own nose, just for a second. I was on a very important phone call, wasn’t really paying attention, and I decided to take my record and lift it off the platter like normal. My turntable is the type that automatically stops once it reaches the label, so the problem here was that I lifted the disc while forgetting to move the tonearm back to its resting position, and I’ve got one pretty good scratch of my own, along with a loud scream of protest from my speakers to add insult to injury. The worst part, it’s not really the easiest record to find. The good part, it was one of those double disc LPs that comes in a gatefold, so the scratch only affected two tracks of the entire album. I can’t replace it right now, so I have to deal with that little pop, but it’s a rock/metal album, so the music is loud enough that you don’t really hear it unless you are standing inches away from the speakers and are really looking for it. If it was I buy Meshuggah that I scratched, which I recently bought on blue colored vinyl that was limited to 700 copies and is the only rarer record I own, I probably really would’ve punched myself in the nose

I did this in my first record. And I managed to get it worse by trying to get the tonearm. The record was a Kiss - Psycho Circus. I had to replace It.

Best thing I can add to top this off about not hurrying is USE THAT TONEARM LEVER, even though you might not want to. I'm in my fifties and disabled, and my grip is a bit buggered, so I make sure I ALWAYS use the tonearm, but I still did this practice long before I had these problems. It's just a simple thing that can prevent a myriad of mistakes.

A similar event happened to me to. Once when I was locking the tonearm, I bumped it off the rest and it slid across the record and there was the really loud screeching noise. Thankfully, the record and stylus were fine. The tonearm just took a bit of a joyride

I’ve also had this kind of record. It's a Celeste soundtrack. Thought I wasn't in a hurry, but super tired and when I swap my records I've just dropped it and scratch both sides at the same time! One fell on the spindle and the other slide under the tonearm. Luckily, I got a replacement already, but I've understood your pain :)

BTW, also had an Ortofon cartridge! But mine is red :)

Wow Jarrett, I really feel for you, I bet that was a shock seeing that happen to your record. I think we've all done something like that at some point. That's why I use an automatic turntable now. But even a couple of those can have issues when dropping the needle. I once had a turntable, can't remember what make it was, that when the tonearm went to beginning of the record, it would drop down onto the record so fast the needle sometimes jumped right across the lead in grooves into the first track, thus missing a few seconds of the music. It was a right pain and just really bugged me. Needless to say I didn't have that record player very long.

Well, i have an automatic Technics turntable, so something like this can't happen, but i have a few janky italian 45s where the lead-in groove part isn't wide enough, so the needle slipped down to the mat. I also slipped a record after cleaning right onto the corner of my PC. The scratch looks ugly, but it's inaudible, because it was a 12" maxi-single where the grooves are deeper and thicker.

I bought a new turntable in April and the cueing button lasted about 1 month. The arm felt a little heavier than I thought it should anyway so I adjusted the weight and that seemed to fix it. LP60.
@PCFixer4 жыл бұрын
Hmm... is it possible to use VERY, VERY FINE wet/dry sandpaper to 'smooth away' the scratch, so long as you follow the grooves of the record? Effectively shim away the surface-vinyl where it's scratched to the 'virgin' unscratched vinyl beneath?
@terribleadelaidedrivers87544 жыл бұрын
I did something similar. I had just bought an album and played the first side. When I went to flip it I removed the record weight that I used and it slipped out of my fingers. The bottom edge of the weight had carved a trench deep enough to bury a body in. That side was pretty much unplayable. I have since replaced the weight with one that isn't so slippery to hold.

I learnt the hard way too about scratching and damaging records. When I started collecting records back in the last week of 2019, I played one of the albums I got that day, which was Jamie xx's In Colour, and as I turned over the record from Side A to Side B, I accidentally dropped it and it hit the bench and rolled down the carpet away from the turntable, and I ended up scratching all over Side A of the record (Side B was fine so I continued playing it). Luckily, the album was in stock at a nearby JB Hi-Fi (I'm in Australia), the album was pretty cheap and there was an annual end-of-year sale across store and vinyls and CDs are usually 20% off, so I was able to order it online and have it delivered. I still keep the original to remind me that I should take extra care of my records, which is good because it hasn't happened since.

One time I was playing a Beatles record. When I went to lower the lever of the tone arm I bumped it in track one. Luckily it was a small little dent and was only a little poppy.

I remember one time I was playing an audio book, right near the end of it, I was trying to grab something, but I accidentaly bumped the needle and it slammed on the record label, which made a loud static noise. So here is another hint. When the records are playing, hands away!

I have a nice Denon turntable the problem with my queue up lever is it drops the tonearm little bit too fast so I believe there is some special fluid that I just have to find out where it goes and how much to put in there

That's the reason why I retired my manual player. After 50, handling small objects became quite a nuisance, no matter how I cared sometimes the nerves and muscles fail miserably. Gone full auto, problem solved. No finger rest, no cue levers, no provision for handling the arm manually at all. That said, it's surprising that some awfully scratched records sometimes sound quite decent.

I once dropped a record and while trying to grab it from hitting the floor, propelled it to roll on its edge across a room and then down a flight of stairs. It ended up rolling into the sofa. Much to my amazement, the record was unscathed!!

I was holding my copy of Betty Everett's "woman With Soul," a rare northern soul album, over my turntable and the record slipped, falling directly on to the tonearm, then the platter... The needle did a nice bounce and drag all across one side. Luckily for me there are only light hairlines that can barely be seen.
