19:40 I could be wrong, but that battleship in the background could be HMS Agincourt. Built in 1913, she was originally ordered by the Brazilian government in 1911 to be their flagship, to be named the Rio de Janeiro, in an effort to redress the growing naval imbalance between Brazil and her South American neighbors, particularly Argentina and Chile. In an effort to compensate for Brazil's inability to produce larger caliber ammunition, she was equipped with 7 twin turrets for a total of 14 12-inch main guns, the most guns of any battleship in the world at the time. However, following the collapse of Brazil's rubber monopoly due to British Far East competition, Brazil was unable to finish paying for the battleship. The ship was then sold to the Ottoman Empire, who renamed her the Sultan Ozman I. She was completed in late December 1913 and underwent sea trials in July 1914, in the middle of the July Crisis that would lead to the First World War. Despite a Turkish crew having arrived to take delivery of the ship, with it seeming clear that the Ottomans would join the war on the side of Germany and Austria, the Royal Navy under Winston Churchill refused to release the ship and instead seized her as their own, christening her HMS Agincourt. Some have speculated that the seizure of Agincourt and another battleship Turkey had paid for, HMS Erin, may have been motivating factors for Turkey to join Germany against the country that, in their eyes, had stolen their money and their battleships, further helped by Germany offering the cruisers Goeben and Breslau as compensation for Agincourt and Erin. HMS Agincourt went on to have an eventful career with the British, being part of the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland. She was finally retired and sold for scrap in 1923 to fulfill requirements of the Washington Naval Treaty, but wrecked on a beach in Scotland on her way to the breakers and had to be cut up on site. The Brazilians never got their battleship.
@inuush Жыл бұрын
That's really interesting, good on Germany for supporting their allies properly, let's not forget that in WWI they weren't technically "the bad guys," people tend to forget that and just assimilate it with WWII's Germany, I wonder how different the world would be if Germany won WWI, curious stuff.
@fuynnywhaka101 Жыл бұрын
@@inuush for Germany the two ships where pretty much trapped in the Black sea after being chased there by some British and French ships. Another point of contention is how much of the crews where actually Ottoman and not Germans with Fezs on for lack of a better term. as regards to the Seizure of the two ships that where being built for the Ottomans by the British, compensation was offered which would of been either the British, buy the ship out right, or the keep them to the end of hostilities and are them given to the Ottomans, with any damage being either payed for or repaired, Or if Sunk another ship offered as a replacement, or to pay the cost to them. I am basing that on the fact the that happened to the two Incomplete Almirante Latore Class battleships that where being built for the Chilean navy, Almirante Latorre and Almirante Cochrane, which became the HMS Canada and was launched and saw service as a BB. and HMS Eagle which due to being more incomplete, was converted to a Aircraft Carrier, Post war Latorre was returned (Sold Back) to Chile, but as the cost to reconvert Eagle to a BB was too high, she was payed off and the old Invincible Class Battlecruisers Inflexible and Indomitable, where on offer as replacement but due to political thing that fell through.

@@fuynnywhaka101better than stealing neutral nation's ship just because "I need them" in my book
@sirrliv Жыл бұрын
@@fuynnywhaka101 A very fair point that I didn't have time to mention: The Goeben & Breslau were indeed trapped in Turkish waters and were essentially sold for convenience. The fact that they compensated for the two battleships Britain had "stolen" was an added bonus. Regarding British offers of compensation, the situation with Turkey was a bit different. Such offers may have been mooted, but it was pretty clear which side the Turks were leaning toward even before their official entry into the war. So even as Turkish crew were steaming across the Tyne to take delivery of Agincourt, Churchill radioed the Royal Navy crew to raise the ensign and defend the ship by force if necessary. Whether they would have offered payment or not, they were not letting a potential enemy have one of the most powerful warships in the world at the time. And within a year the Ottomans did indeed join the Central Powers, so any offer of compensation was off the table.
@sirrliv Жыл бұрын
@@AaronShenghao Like I said to Francis Lavelle, The Ottomans weren't exactly neutral. While they didn't officially declare war until October 1914, there had been strong German influence for decades, so it was pretty clear which way the winds were blowing even before shots were fired.

Can’t wait for some RT Games earth hunger games/hide and go seek with a massive chunk of people as a video. I really hope you capitalize on the masterpiece made.

I love this series, the effort people put in and make it informative (including myself hehe) is amazing! Bummed out that I kinda didn't keep up for a while since I had planned an epic Pirates of the Caribbean build like 1.5 years ago but oh well!

I love the New Earth stuff since I usually learn so much (albeit temporarily), and people seem to show both the good and bad of history alongside memes

i know this will get lost in the sea of comments but this video is one of my comfort videos now, im part brazilian and my mom has been in brazil for over a year now and i havent seen her for so long, so many of these things bring back such nice memories of things she did with me, especially the guarana, and ive only ever lived in canada so this was so nice to learn more and see all these cool builds!
