Yes, unfortunately there is great preferential treatment. I am in Liberia and they do wait sometimes for days to get their money. Of course, Western Union will not acknowledge this. Electronically, it is there in minutes. Practically, it may take days of waiting.

Unfortunately this type of attitude/work ethic is very common in many developing countries. There are probably many reasons, but one of the most powerful seems to be the effect of remittances on work. When families receive what is basically a subsidy from family/friends who live and work in developed nations in the form of remittances it has the effect of discouraging work and even education, much like the effect of welfare/social benefit payments in the developed world on their own populations. Remittances also have the unintended consequence of putting artificial pressure on wages in a country since workers who receive remittances are less likely to want to work for the prevailing local wage and instead demand a higher wage closer to the wages of the developed country their remittances came from - if enough workers receive remittances and do this you end up with high unemployment and a high number of unfilled job openings while experiencing low economic growth and an economy that is artificially skewed and broken by outside forces.
