INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THE BLANKET
Materials: Fabric, scissors (or rotary cutter), sewing machine, thread, DMC floss, an expensive comforter (don't buy down - you'll be cutting it and feathers would be everywhere!).
Blanket sizing: Mine is 48" (122 cm) x 68" (173). I think this is a great size for a couch blanket, but you can make yours in whatever size you want!
1. Make your blanket top and bottom (both should be the same size). If you are using standard 44" (112 cm) wide fabric, you'll need to sew panels together to make it wide enough! If you want to do a quilted top like mine, I used this tutorial to make the half triangle squares: • 3 Ways to Make 1/2 Squ...
2. Lay out your comforter on the floor. Lay either your top or bottom piece on top of the comforter (it doesn't matter which one), and cut your comforter to match the piece in size.
3. Lay out your comforter on the floor. Lay your bottom piece on top of the comforter RIGHT SIDE UP. Lay your top piece on top of the bottom piece RIGHT SIDE DOWN.
4. Pin all three pieces together and then sew it all up, leaving about an 8" (20 cm) opening on one side so you can turn it right side out.
5. Trim the raw edges of your blanket with pinking shears, then turn it right side out. Sew up the opening you left.
6. Using DMC floss and an embroider needle, thread the floss through all three layers of fabric and tie a little knot! Do that in even spacing across the width and length of the quilt.
And that's it!

This was hands down my total fav episode!! I love your new sock pattern, but as a new sock knitter, I'll stick to the vanilla socks for now. I already bought 13 of your patterns (it might be more, im afraid to count😂). I was wondering: how do you do the math for your sock patterns? Because you wrote out the pattern before you made it. So if anyone wants to mix and match your patterns into one sock, how do they figure out how to do that? It's so funny, I find all crafters are into multiple crafts. It is so awesome that you sew as well and dipping your toes into quilting. Love, love, love the way that you continue to challenge yourself. It's encouraging to all of us with real lives and problems. Yes, focus on the positives, and keep trying. BTW, most of us set unrealistic goals, but it's great that you are so positive about it.😅

Absolutley loved the part where Dave tries to explain the math to you.......this is exactly my husband (who is a Carpenter) and I when he explains measurements to me. My brain just cannot compute!!!! It was so funny I had to show my husband and he said yep that's you and me!! Love your podcast is wonderful!

Oh Summer, I just love you and you always make me smile and laugh. You are so relatable. This is by far my favorite episode so far. The rock climbing was an awesome bonus, but my favorite? You so proudly dancing around or laying under or just adorning your beautiful blanket and socks so we could see what you made.. Thanks for sharing, lady. I hope you know you are so appreciated for bringing joy and enthusiasm and your genuine self to the table. Have a great week!

Hello Summer, bought your sock book while vacationing in Santa Cruz Ca. I watched your video getting ready for your beach trip to 30A also a very fun place. I’m knitting my 4th pair of socks ever, using your Harriet cable sock design. My first cable knitting and things are going well! Had to comment on this video because I too am horrible at math and also have a wonderful husband who does it for me. I used to sew but now my awesome guy does it for me. It’s better that way. In exchange for my husband’s house construction and sewing , I cook, bake and am now knitting him socks. A fair trade, don’t you think?😂 Enjoying both your book and your videos, thanks for sharing your bit of heaven with the rest of us, take care 😊

Bangs, burning off your bangs is less forgiving ( trust me ) . The best part is no one at work said ANYTHING until I mentioned it ...they thought it was a style choice ( I am known for some bad ones) . I once tried on a "poncho" to go with a dress for a christmas party. The pity in the woman's eyes when she told me I was trying on a tree skirt was something. Perfection is way over rated. Another great video, SO glad I found you.

You crack me up, Summer, every episode is an adventure full of twists and turns. I laugh so hard at your ‘let’s see what google has to say…moments’. The quilt turned out really beautiful and the socks are perfection well done! I can totally relate to your fear of heights. I tested mine on a zip line adventure in Alaska that my adventurous friend wanted to go on - 8 zips ranging from 70- 800 feet o er the rainforest careening down a mountain with two suspension bridges to cross and finally relaying 70 feet off a platform to get back to terra firma. I was flying high for days after completing this feat. Good for you for tackling the wall.

OMG I’m exactly the same as you with calculations! The moment someone talks numbers at me, it just like a big curtain drops down before my eyes, and their words become gibberish. Your blanket is beautiful. I’m in awe because I don’t sew at all. I love the cable pattern on your red socks. Incidentally, I think maybe ‘Buoy’ is pronounced ‘Boy’, as in those anchored floats you might see to warn of danger etc., and they are usually bright red… think of buoyancy, buoyant. And, it’s another nautical connection to your blanket! ❤️🛟 PS - I’m so sorry, I’ve just found out that buoy is pronounced differently in America. I have never heard it pronounced that way! You learn something every day. 😬

I look forward to your videos every week. I love feeling like I have stopped by and we are visiting and knitting. As for sewing--you are braver than I am. After I broke 2 separate machines, I make a deal with the universe. I will never use a sewing machine again and we will maintain a balance in the universe! When things go south in the universe-it's not because I am using a sewing machine. Smiling at your fear of heights-my mother was terrified of heights, also. One memorable trip to Glacier Park-driving over Going-to-the-Sun. My father points to something across the valley-my mother is staring straight ahead. When my dad points this out she replies, "I have looked in 25 years and I am not about to look now!" I am at the end of the video. The socks are on my must knit list. If your beautiful blanket disappears-don't come to Montana to find it. 😁

I'm a quilter turned knitter so yes, I was dying just a touch, LOL. Such a fun episode. Two quick things - there are some quilting calculators your can install as an app on your phone in case Dave is not available. The one I've used is the Robert Kaufman quilt calculator. Also you might look up how to nestle your seams as you attach the rows - someone mentioned pins but you can also just nestle the two seams between your fingers until they sort of lock together and sew on! Either way, a beautiful result!

What a wonderful blanket! I have made quilts, the first one hand pieced and hand quilted. It was a gift for my mother, who always wanted one. Others I machine pieced and hand quilted--I have one that even now needs to be completed with the hand quilting. Maybe you've inspired me. But I also made my son a quilt put together just like yours, machine pieced and hand tied, except your tying looks much neater than mine did. I love that you are from OK; I'm an Arkansas girl relocated to the east coast, and learned about you from The Tiny Desk Knitter's podcast. I have so enjoyed all the podcasts I've seen; and am working my way through the ones I have not yet seen. Grateful to have found your podcast!

Really love this podcast. I have the same sewing struggles! I have some sock questions for you… Q1. so socks have less chance of rolling down over time could you sew thin elastic to the tops or knit the cuff with a smaller needle? Q2. how do you grade your sock patterns? Is there a standard way to grade up and down or do you send it away to be graded? Q3. do you use test knitters? …love, love, love your podcast. I’m from the UK and have ordered your book xx
