I Shaved My Head - And Why Buddhists Do It

Attachments are the cause of suffering. Buddhists therefore see the act of shaving their heads as a first step on their journey of complete detachments. Which should not be confused with a lack of engagement.

Respect. I shaved my head yesterday after having long hair for 10 years and it feels great. Less maintenance and i feel so free.

one of the best double binds is becoming attached to detachment... I'm reminded of the old quote, "everything in moderation, including moderation" ;)

I first cut all my hair off when I was 33. I used to go to Bergdorf Goodman in NYC every other week and have my precious locks cut for $80 dollars a pop. One day my French stylist suggested we just cut it all off...I never went back to long hair or to Bruno. To take one's hair off is to sever one's relationship to the past, to eliminate forms of self identity. I shave my head every other day now these last 27 years. It is a bit like fasting in a way. Fasting has the magical effect of severing one's emotions to the past. So cutting off the hair and food are two marvelous tools for transcendence. I admire you Lauritz for your constant effort toward your goal.

Yes, that saves you a lot of money right there. What would we be without our goals ;) They are probably the last thing to transcend on the spiritual path. Or rather to hold them as open desires instead of something we cling to.

I struggled with this for years especially in my early 20s because my hair has been thinning since i graduated for years and i attached my happiness & attractiveness to my hair. I shaved it because i had someone notice how bad it had thinned in the front so at 25 years old i starting shaving my head and have not looked back since. It will take time to get used to it but buddhas are right we gotta be okay with not being attached to something as shallow as hair or looks because they fade as we get it older.

I’m watching this since I plan on donating and shaving my head for the first time soon. I’m a minimalist, and I want to detach from all of the meaning behind my long hair. I’m not my hair, and I’m ready to shed this old self.

It's definitely a transformative experience to go through. I would suggest to be open to what develops in the space it creates. Be aware of attachments to having no hair😉

@@ConsciousDevelopment we Hindus traditionally shaved our heads leaving a bunch of long hair at the crown, which was knotted. It is called the shikha hairstyle.

You look very handsome with the shaved hair. I like that look on you a lot. Also, I agree about the attachment issues. Hair is the identity for many man and that is unfortunate. I gave up my hair many years ago and it was liberating.

You say that your hair was thinning on the top and you had itching and flaking. It's all connected. I had the same problem. When my hair was thinning and falling off, the areas on top of my head that was thinning became very itchy and uncomfortable. The follicles were drying and dying so they itched. I began to shave my head and it disappeared completely.

I'm struggling with an autoimmune disease that causes my hair to fall slowly in one spot, and I have fought with that for over a decade now - I'm 34. I was curious why Buddhists shave their head and found your video. It was interesting that you mentioned an itchy scalp problem. Did it help you when you shaved it? Thanks!

from my research .. (I have scapula psoriasis) ... the candida over growth is a likely culprit .. the fix is a balanced diet (low sugar, diary and meat consumption is important) and increasing the stomach acid strength .. with a table spoon of apple cider vinegar every morning for 6 - 18 months (its a long fix tho .. takes years and years) .. there are also supplements that address a candida over growth .. i.e. the candida over growth is happening in our gut and then spreads or 'presents' on our skin .. just the scalp if its not too severe .. so I guess shaving your hair will work .. however it might come back again .. since the root cause still remains .. (which is v common btw) its looks cool on you tho .. I have had long hair since I left school .. have been thinking of shaving it off just see what its like

Thanks for the info. I was aware of that connection. I have tried many things over the years and it has gotten a lot better. But it was not 100%. And I was also curious to see what it's like, so I made the decision. And I hadn't any itching since.

@ConsciousDevelopment
@ConsciousDevelopment 3 ай бұрын
Yes, that is correct. I actually feel that short hair is easier to maintain. I don't have to cut it as regularly as I had to shave. So I let it grow for a few weeks and then cut it back quite short again.

@@ConsciousDevelopment You are most welcome. I am a soto monk. Also quite a bit older than you, not that this is important. I am not balding. The head shaving is just part of my practice. And yes you are correct, having a shaved head does not mean anything. Everything is human invented. The photo of me here is an older photo. I just couldn't be bothered changing it. I have found that adding head shaving daily to the usual morning bathroom routine is not a big deal. Going over it daily usually in the morning just seems best. I don't use any kind of shaving cream. Its just an unnecessary expense. Just hot/warm water. I buy the disposable razors at the family dollar store. I will purchase 10 or 20 packs at a time. I get 3 or 4 shaves then they get very dull so I toss and use a new one. It is a matter of just getting used to it and doing it. Sides - back to front. Back - up to the crown. Top - front to back. Going against the grain I find, gets it very close. The electric shavers are a joke and can be very irritating, painful and for the trouble don't get close at all. You just feel your head with wet finger tips for the places you need to keep going over. keep the razor wet and you are good to go. lastly, the cultural fixation with hair is a contrivance. basically is bullshit. Fads and fashions are all human invented contrivances and empty of reality and truth. The robes I wear have not been altered for many many hundreds of years. Customs and fashions come and go but certain things remain the same more or less. Having no hair means nothing. Having hair also means nothing. I choose to shave head. Don't be concerned about what any one else's opinion of you is. No one can or will live your unique life for you and therefore no body is in a place to assign a silly label or judgment about your appearance. You look just fine. Be who and what you are. When the temps are cold, wear a knit hat. In summer to avoid burning wear a brimmed hat or a baseball cap. Simple. Easy. Its not a problem and so there is no need to create a belief of one. I enjoy your videos. Good stuff. Good work. Be well.
