A. They only look good comparatively on this compressed 1080p KZbin video. B. Blown up on a computer screen and side by side there would be no comparison. C. Phone photos cannot be printed on large canvases or into larger photo frames. D. What you like is his editing style, everything else will fall short on phone VS. dslr. This video is a waste of time and filler. All he's showing is if you don't have a camera and just a phone, you can have some nice IG photos if you learn how to edit and practice.

Yeah, I dont think Peter should have done this, in this situation. A wedding.. it's time to sit back and be there for the couple. Not to make a point like this. The couple clearly hired another pro to do their job, and now that was possibly out shadowed by this video. I LOVE Peter SO much! But, I think this was wrong and in poor taste. Kinda like the "right tool for the job" in this case.. you need to know when to stop, and be there for others.

in my opinion, he is giving on some tips that you dont need an expensive equipment to shoot a good photography and this tips can come handy for those who cant afford a professional photographer on their wedding day but still want a good photos to remember by... and if his friends didnt want him to put their photos, then he wont put it on anyway... there are purpose for everything :) not everyone can afford thousands of dollars worth of photography but that doesnt mean they dont deserve a good photo. this is me speaking as a photographer as well :)

Travis Harris Photography I see where you are coming from and I can agree, but it’s their wedding and I can imagine that they would looove as many photos as they could get, professional and unprofessional to capture all the memories and moments. Also I recon he would have probably asked the photographer maybe and if he hadn’t, I don’t think he would get in the road of the other photographer, due to him being one as well. He also would know what it is like to have people getting in the road trying to take his own photos.

Alot of people here are asking Peter to explain more about having a "good eye" in photography. He did, having a good eye means knowing all the compositions in the back of your head and being able to spot them. Be it framing the shot with leaves (Creating depth), positioning the couple so that the sun acts as a hair light instead of a fill/key light, using leading lines, rule of thirds. On top of that, knowing what editing tools are available to you contributes to the "good eye" as well. Exposing for the subject but sky is blown out? its okay cuz we can add lens flare, color of that blue building not looking very good? its okay we can change the hue to Teal to match the orange skin tones. Watch more tutorials, keep shooting and editing and eventually you'll have the "good eye"

Peter. . I love ya man.. but I wouldn't want newbie photographers to misunderstand what you're saying and just start going out and shooting weddings and potentially ruin the most important day of someone's life. . . .I would suggest they find a professional that they can shadow and second-shoot for first. . .and do that for a good few months before even considering going out and taking on a wedding as a main shooter. Weddings only happen once, and they're not a place to go out and test or build your skills without prior experience. 👍🏻 :)

Pretty sure that isn't directed to a total newbie. More towards someone that has some experience and has at least a body of work (folio) to present to potential clients. That's what a couple would be looking for at a minimum from their potential photographer yeah? Peter did mention a few other styles have some transferable skills to bring into wedding photography too.

Light Science Studios: I tend to agree. I suppose you could do what peters talking about as a secondary photographer “in the side”. Where you just work on your skills and then give the bride and groom any photos you took that they liked.
@LightScienceStudios
@LightScienceStudios 6 жыл бұрын
Adrian Lagniton yes.. but the other part to it is weddings are unlike almost any other type of Photography. They are high stress environments where things rarely go according to plan. It’s a lot different than doing a family portrait session or shooting a product in a studio, even though those skills do come into play. So it takes a certain personality to be a wedding photographer and someone who is not only confident in their skills, but also quick on their feet and calm under pressure. So that’s why you should always second shoot with a professional before ever trying it on your own as a main.
@2unknown
@2unknown 6 жыл бұрын
Had the same thoughts as you. I'm a part-time wedding photographer and feel it's definitely not a place to experiment, especially if you're the primary shooter. Now if you're shadowing, that's totally okay to experimenting as the main responsibilities does not fall directly on you. A photographer covering a wedding should already have a developed groove on how they work and cover the event. Can't be there to learn how to dance; gotta know how already so that you can focus on adding on new moves!

Having an eye for "the shot" has been such a hard thing for me. I would love to understand the little things to look for. I am a videographer/photographer for about a year now, and although I am gaining some momentum in my career, I am aware that I am self-conscious of my shots because I know that I could do better. Love you Peter but if you could do a future video on that iD LOVE IT

Sitting on location editing photos on my Pixel 2 XL with Snapseed, that's what my life looks like at the moment😄 I started out on Instagram with my old crooked htc one m7 which had an increasingly malfunctioning lens. But in interesting lighting conditions I could take some decent photos despite the bad quality of the camera. It really forced me to get somewhat original with my photography. Last and least, trying to keep it short 😅, I'm still by that day, after one year, so grateful for people like you that are generous enough to share mindbending knowledge☺️ Thanks, bru🤙

The issue with phones, espeically for a wedding video, is a number of things. Yes, if well lit and done right it can look ok, but here's what you miss from a DSLR: 1. Low bitrate. Phones take a lot less information, meaning if you crop in or put the footage side-by-side to a DSLR, phones fall short. 2. Small sensor size. This creates poor low light performance ( a lot of noise and grain in the evenings to deal with) and it results in next to no depth of field (unless you are very very close, which you'll rarely be). 3. No dynamic range. You'll always either have a dark subject and well balanced sky, or a well lit subject and a blown out sky. Indoors would be aweful too. 4. Phones shoot 4k, but not true 4k. This one is hard to explain, if you ever want to know the difference, just type it here into KZbin. 4k on a phone is a sales gimmick and wouldn't compare to a higher end DSLR you should be using (or better of course) on a wedding. People watch these videos and fall into the traps of enjoying someones editing style, but looking past a lot of things to make these looks happen. Peter and many others know what he needs to achieve his look, you cannot just take some videos and hope it works. Also, audio and far away subject would be a nightmare on a phone during a reception or ceremony. There's a reason people don't actually film on phones, unless it's a side project of some sort.

... what is your view on "let the photographer do his/her job" argument? This is an amazingly helpful video, and your photos are obviously great, but I can sympathize for/with the hired photographer. You didn't really specify whether or not you asked him if he she minded or not, so I can't make a judgement there. But imagine being hired to shoot a wedding a wedding and Peter F***ing McKinnon is in the front row snapping bangers from his iPhone. I've been to a couple weddings where they kindly ask for your phone, or for you to not take a ton of pictures during the ceremony, due to the fact that the couple had paid someone to be there and take photos. I don't know; personally I'm on both sides of the fence here. Just my two cents.
@tuxmonkey0

This was my first thought too and a genuine question on your part. The average cost of a wedding in 2017 was ~$25,000. If my family was shelling out that kind of money, including a professional photographer, I wouldn't want people throwing their cell phones around, at least during the ceremony. Also, what stood out the most to me was that he was editing these photos at the main table. Perhaps the folks don't care, but it comes across as tacky. Great content and tutorial, but poor form IMHO.
@Smoothblue90
@Smoothblue90 6 жыл бұрын
My thinking is, that you shouldn't be, right next to the professional photographer, taking the same photographs they take. I think that the professional photographers at weddings get frustrated when they're in the church and they line up the wedding party and they're posing a group of people and then a bunch of people rush in with their phones to get that same shot.
