The sad part is: you could accumulate that much rust on one of this era of cars, in 4 years, if you owned it in the snow belt. Then drove it year round. I bought a 68 Corvair that had a New Hampshire title in 1972. Being a typical 19 year old at the time, I didn't know better. It had 6" rust holes through the floor, hidden inside by carpet. The fender tops and back window frame sort of exploded in a cloud of rust particles, shortly after I got it it. It had so much unibody hidden rust, it was un-licenceable a year later.

Absolutely true 😂 I lived in Massachusetts for most of my life and salt was the bane of any car’s existence. Couldn’t wash them enough if they were on the road in the winter. Plus the snow and slush helped the salt get into places that weren’t accessible, causing it to rot from the inside out. Taught me to never poke at a rusty spot.

What I'd really reccomend for rust removal is to get a sandblasting device and afterwards covering the bare metal with epoxy primer and (minimum) a top coat. Keep your head up high! I am in the process of restoring my 70 GTX. I have owned it since 81. It has 143000 miles on it. I have restored the 440 and rebuilt the three Holleys. Total rebuilt brakes and front end along with new shocks. Engine has aluminum heads and purple shaft cam. Double roller timing chain. Milodon 7 qt. Oil pan with a Melling oil pump. Stock exhaust manifolds and 2 1/2” mid pipes. Exhaust will be added last. I have painted the engine bay and under the trunk lid. All interior floor pans. I have the whole interior recovered with Legendary Interior as well as headliner and vinyl top. I have new bumpers a few new pieces I needed for the air grabber. Now just body work. The car is straight and mostly rust free. I just need the trunk pan welded in and a piece for the rear drivers floor pan. A little work around the corners of the front and rear windshields. I have a spray booth and so far have done all the work myself. But I’m no welder. So I am waiting on that. Well I did need help getting the hood off and the trunk lid😂. I can fire it up and run it up and down my driveway. Goes and stops well. It will be a Deep Burnt Orange car just as it came. It’s an automatic floor consol with an 8 3/4 3:23 geared. It has no fenders or doors on it. All those have been prepped and under primer. You are getting it done and you will have one nice Satellite when you are done. I will keep watching your progress.

@brucechapman19462 ай бұрын
Jared, I started doing bodywork when your car was new and can tell you that if you buy a spot weld drill and redrill the trunk pan welds and properly clamp it all, buy some tobin bronze flux coated brazing rods and practice oxy pool brazing the holes, once you perfect doing it on the trunk floor do it all over, mig welding sheet metal makes it brittle, fold some 20 gauge metal over the edge of a bench to make 90 degree patch strips for the wheel arch edges. bead blast the tops of the arches and paint with bitumen paint before welding the quarter panels on. Don't be disheartened, all the steps lead to a finished job eventually.

before buying roof skin etc you should possible if cost wise is ok get the all car sandblasted that way you can then see without the paint and body filler what the body is like your good a fabricating stuff so making replacement patches wouldnt be too hard if your worried about the frame twisting then get some metal tube and brace the body yeah means more work but like you said if your gonna do it do it right any original metal that you still use you can treat with rust converter or preventer and once the new panels are flushed up you wouldnt know the difference

Jared, Great work. I would tidy up and make good before building. Those wheel tubs are not too bad, but weld in some fabbed panels. It is just a few bits around the edges, dont worry. I do lots of this stuff. Now you have access it will be relatively easy and you wont lose the geometry. You can really get to everything now and those repairs look quite easy. Save yourself a fortune. Once it is all sealed and painted with the outer panels on it will be just strong and fine. It will be much quicker just to deal with what you have too.

Here in Australia, you can take car bodies to places to have them chemically stripped. The advantage of this is the complete removal of rust, even in places you can not reach in conventional ways. When they are done, they apply a light primer to stop new rust from appearing while you work on the restoration. Do they have this sort of thing in the states? Love your channel, mate. Take care
