The five week long battle of Iwo Jima resulted in roughly 45,000 combined casualties. That comes to an average of 1,250 casualties per day on an island that was only 8 square miles in size.

@@user-qo3gz7rl3q The only reason why those Marines in WWI won the Medal of Honor twice was because they were attached to the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division. So they were basically both branches awarding them for the same actions.

I love how they took John Basilone here, despite the legend he became after, and made him just a normal guy emotionally. He never felt grandiose or like his story overshadowed that of the others stories. They didn't portay him as a stock typically war movie would as like the Brad Pitt soildier man. He was just a guy. Thats why I am glad I learned his story here in this miniseries as opposed to say a film about him specifically. I mean A typical film would make him out to be to heroic. It would certainly not include my favorite scene in the miniseries... Him almost vomiting on his medal of honor citation.

@@ChrisMathers3501 I'm sure you've also thought, as I have, about what it must of been like to be in the shoes of our Granddads. As far as your grandpa, I think serving in any role on Okinawa would have been insanely intense. Even if he didn't fight I'm sure he saw some extremely unpleasant things. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the servicemen who played a role in those terrible campaigns in the Pacific. From Guadalcanal, to Tarawa, Peleliu, Saipan, Iwo, Okinawa, etc. Also, just fyi, my dad's dad was a surgeon who was stationed in Burma (a much forgotten theatre) and my mom's dad was a crewman on a B-17(as an engineer if I recall) that was used not for bombing but for ferrying officers from island to island over the vast distances of the Pacific theatre. I find it very sad that father time has caught up with that generation; it's really up to us and our parents to inform the kids these days. But it just doesn't have the same effect as talking to the people actually there. Anyway, this was rambling enough!

I had tears falling through the whole video. Next episode, Sledge and SNAFU, walk through another layer of hell. Stories like this teach us that we need to honor our vets. We should demand that our leaders never demand that our soldiers kill, and die, for any thing less than just cause. A good less on for Veterans Day.

@@omalleycaboose5937 Awe & terror. It really is great cinema and cinematography. The finals seconds that show us the flamethrower and it's devilish hiss and whoosh is what really gets to me. Being in a bunker that is flamed by napalm seems to me to be one of the most heinous ways to go in WW2 (or any war for that matter). A most hellish weapon on a most hellish landscape that was Iwo Jima.

Basilone was in the 5th Marine Division for Iwo Jima. None of his friends were at Iwo Jima because the 1st Marine Division was getting ready for Okinawa which was commenced April of 1945. And a lot 1st Battalion, 7th Marines were either killed in action on Peleliu or wounded the ones who weren't sent back home.

You have the most honest reaction to this episode, people watch Band of Brothers and it is like watching most "war films" those your have no attachment to exit the film, but this isn't film, these are real life people and when they show them dyeing, they did in fact die, I will say in all honesty you do need to read the books written by all the main folks in the series, Robert Leckie Helmet for my pillow, E.B. Sledge With the Old Breed, and Chuck Tatum,

The Battle of Iwo Jima was the deadliest conflict in WWII. In that famous image of US marines raising the flag on Mt. Suribachi 3 out of the 6 men would be killed in battle. Of the 3 survivors only 2 were able to live on with a normal life. PTSD sadly claimed the other. He drank himself to death

To give an idea of the casualties among the Marines at Iwo Jima, John Basilone had four of his fellow sergeants as groomsmen at his wedding. Of these five, Basilone and two others were killed and the other two wounded, one of them losing a hand.
