I started at age 4 playing my father ( not a professional but a good club player level). He never let me win and I eventually beat him when I was 14. Playing for my birthday money. I won, he never played me again as he said he couldn’t teach me anything more. I played for Dundee Chess Club and Scottish Ladies chess icon Nancy Elder was the club’s mentor. The author of Queens Gambit died so there was only the one book. It could have had a sequel as at the end of her game Vasily Borgov gives Beth the king. There could have been a message inside a specially hollowed out king that says he needs to defect. The special agent asked Beth to look out for messages. Pity it would have been a good idea for the sequel.

Contrarily, I started playing chess at 4, with my brother, 12 years older but had no idea, knew only how the pieces move, but no e.p. I started playing at clubs when I was 14, I had mediocre success in chess, I taught my sun how to, he won South Wales u13 championship, but eventually quit chess since he never managed to beat me.

@@ounalan I was 3rd in Rhodesian junior schools championship as a 14/15 year old. I should have won but lost a game to a girl with amazing cleavage - teenage boy hormones kicked in and I lost. I helped start a chess club in Edinburgh called Westerhailes and it jumped to 2nd division. I love chess but at 68 and no playing in tournaments during my IT Career meant that I lost my game and knowledge stagnated to 1982 level.

9:23 contrary for me... I'm 2100 elo onto puzzles, 600 for 10 minutes games, and 280 elo for blitz. That's not a joke. When I do puzzles, I KNOW for sure there is something to find. So I really try to get it. And puzzles is almost just about endgames and checkmates, that's way easier than middle game and openings.
