OLED consumes less power when in low brightness compared to IPS, but consomes A LOT MORE power when at max brightness than an IPS at the same nits. Your battery tests were made with 100% brightness which is nice, we can be sure that that was indeed the worst case scenario.
@nintendork074 күн бұрын
would much rather see a battery test like most use 50% brightness (or calibrated to a certain number like 250 nits), 50% audio, wifi/bluetooth on. since that's the most common use case indoors

I''m looking forward to mine. I feel like this the culmination of what I've been looking for for about 3 years - about $200, great screen that is not tiny, powerful enough to adequately run PS2/GC, nice battery life, video out. My RG556 got close but frustratingly limited - I bought that at launch for full price.

Wow, haven't watched a single second of the video yet but I'm shocked by the title that Joey sold his Odin 2 Mini. I find Joey to be one of the most honest and transparent reviewers in this space so this is a bit surprising as he has been pretty critical about Retroid products in the past (which I appreciate). I originally was going to save up for the Odin 2 Mini because the RP Mini was disappointing for me when it came out (mainly cuz the 3.7 inch screen) but when the RP5 came out, I was excited until it said only 6GB Ram & Android 10 but thankfully they updated that. So then I decided to take a gamble by getting the GC RP5 after the 1st 5 mins of pre-sale launch. Judging by your RP5 livestream and from the title, I'm happy I made the choice of sticking with the RP5. But now, I'm just hoping that it doesn't have any software problems or hardware issues by the time it gets to me, and hopefully in one piece (and the right color). Gonna be my first and last Retroid handheld I'll ever purchase

Great video! Totally agree about the RP5 being a great companion handheld to a larger/more powerful device. I have an OLED Deck already and I bought a RP5 for exactly that reason. I wanted a more portable handheld that retains a lot of the same emulation power. Much more reasonable price compared to any of the Odin 2s as well, and I don't need Odin 2's extra power for Switch because I can just use my Switch for those games anyways.

So in this video, it was mentioned about the RP5 being more portable than the Odin 2, which is true. However, I dont see anyone storing an RP5 in their pockets considering its size and so either device would require some sort of case or a bag to store when out and about. I may try the RP Mini, a 3.5 inch RG35XXSP device didnt bother my eyes, so with a 3.7 inch i dont see this being a concern.

I was looking for a new handheld at just the right time. Was heavily considering the RG Cube, but decided the usb-c out would disappoint me. I had set my eye on the Odin Mini, even though it's size looked a bit bigger than I'd like. I placed a bet on a 2nd hand one, but was outbid. Then the RP Mini was announced and then the RP 5. I knew instantly which one I wanted. I preordered on day one the RP MIni. I know not everyone else is into these small devices and I hope everyone else enjoys what they order, but for me, the Mini is close to perfect. Joey, I love your analysis on d-pad placement. I 100% agree. I am usually a retro 2d gamer who mostly uses the d-pad. When I use a game controller, I prefer symmetrical d-pad on top placement. When it comes to handheld however, (even though the Mini is slightly in bound as you describe) I think stick on top is better. Great assessment!
@mattdavis96014 күн бұрын
I'd been seriously considering the Mini; but, the 5 isn't that much bigger physically nor is it that much more expensive, and it gives me all of that beautiful widescreen PS2 goodness. I'm still waffling between the P5 and the Odin2 series. The O2M is approximately the same size as the 5 and doesn't have quite as good of a screen; but, has a lot more power for future proofing. Joey said the Retroid 5's big advantage over the Anbernics is that people who buy this year's Anbernic Androids will get next year's Anbernic Androids too because of the inevitable performance uplift of the redesign. At that point they'll have spent more than if they'd just gotten the high performance Retroid in the first place. Vime's Boots Theory from "Discworld" in action, for all you literary types reading this comment. Isn't the O2M and regular O2 just the turbo version of that dynamic? Then again; it's not like retro games are getting harder to run. Outside of one specific Play Store game (Grid: Legends) everything on the Play Store and in emulation that I care about can be done, with a bit more tweaking perhaps, on the SD865. I don't necessarily need an 8G2. But, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want an 8G2. It's like slamming your fist on a big red button labeled "EASY MODE". Is that worth an extra $100 and losing the AMOLED screen? Joey doesn't think so and I trust Joey to give me the straight and unvarnished truth. That's why I'm going to buy... The Powkiddy RGB20 Pro! ;-D (This is a joke. I'd rather lose 69 straight games of TicTacToe to myself while locked in a cold, insufficiently lit room than buy a Powkiddy.)

If you can afford it, yeah, go for it. I was originally going to save up for an Odin Mini but I really wanted the white colorway and it really sucks that it is only offered with the pro model. And I don't usually by all-white devices but I wanted it, until the RP5 was revealed and the specs were updated. Didn't want to spend $400+ for the Mini even though it's way more powerful and premium. The power just isn't necessary for my use case. Yeah, the RP5 buttons are a bit more audible than my liking from what I can tell watching by Joey and other reviewers but I can live with it. The Anbernic SP buttons higher audibility didn't bother me so I highly doubt the RP5 buttons will bother me. As long as they aren't obnoxiously loud like blue mechanical switches on a keyboard, I'm good

Could somebody explain, why RP5 has better battery life against Odin 2 Mini when SD Gen 2 is much more energy efficient and screen size is smaller (battery capacity is the same)... Is the main reason in OLED vs Mini LED screen? If we talk about same games with the same scale factor.
@Ap6164 күн бұрын
It's more energy efficient 'given its power level'. And the 8G2 is quite a bit more powerful than the 865, so it's gotta generate heat & dissipate it somewhere if you are utilizing for performance or upscaling. Also, the O2M & RP5 are fairly similar in size. RP5 is actually a little bigger footprint, and it's more in between O2M & Switch Lite in size. So either the thermal design(like ventilation/heatsink/fan) is worse for it than the RP5 or it's limited by physics for heat dissipation, or both. Chip for chip, the 865 is actually a demonstrably more stable percentage during a 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test benchmark when pushing the device for 20 minutes iirc. And even more with a nice active fan & heatsink. Then on top of that you have an OLED display which should be more battery efficient at the same Resolution & Hz, & of a similar size. I don't know if that very bright MiniLED in the O2M also eats battery over a regular IPS, let alone an OLED.
@ed-fruty3 күн бұрын
@Ap616 , sure, it makes sense if we talk in performance context, but I was asking about the same (not mega powerful) task. Let's take as an example some neutral ps1/dc game. It will utilise for example 35% CPU for 865 and let it be 15% for Gen 2 when the scale factor is the same. And according to the chip energy efficiency it has to use less power on Odin2 Mini or where I've been mistaken?
@matrioshkabrainn4 күн бұрын

@glight04 күн бұрын
That was my issue with Odin 1 Lite (although that’s slightly bigger 6” screen). Too cumbersome to use on a break or on lunch at work. Upgraded to an Odin 2 Mini and it’s much more suited to the task without sacrificing too much comfort / screen size. I prefer the stick top and inset dpad / right stick as well. The only drawback is the price is significantly more than rp5. $350-$400 is not a small amount but the sd8g2 does allow for more switch games (and no need for settings tweaks in GC or PS2). If I had to buy again I would still go O2M. I know I’m going to use it more with the better size.
