Just an FYI: Finnish has a different linguistic background than German. But, on the page and to a novice, it looks very similar. That was why I said that. I have left one comment that explains what languages are more commonly related to Finnish (if you wish to do your own research) and will be removing the rest. My videos are not places for self-aggrandizing internet experts who cannot read a room to save their life. If you are interested in learning more about Finnish, here is a place to start: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_language If you want to learn more about about resale, then my channel is going to be of interest to you, as that is my core audience’s main reason for watching my content.

As the Director of our local Historical Society, my heart beat a little faster when watching this video. Over and over again we hear, "I'm donating these things because my kids don't care anything about them." I realize that may now have been the case in this instance, but it's just fantastic that the family heirloom and genealogical recordings have been returned to a family member who appreciates them! Bravo!!!

The handwriting and information in the Bible has profound worth to the family. Most people have too few links or artifacts from their past. The saddest experience is to see the buckets of old photos without names in antique stores. Thanks for helping this family.

I found an artists personal mini sketch book at a garage sale (only paid $1), and when I reasearched the name I found the family lived very close to me so I just sent them a message asking if it was their family's and if they wanted it. They were so grateful, if was of their father who had passed a few years earlier and they guess since the stepmom had recently passed, it was sold in the estate. Anyway, I had not listed it yet so I just sent it to them for free and they were super appreciative. I do love stories like this for us resellers. Thanks for sharing🙂

Cool story. I was on the other end of something like this… my wife and I had bought a house built in the late 1800’s. One morning, while we were still in the midst of moving, I decided to do an eBay search on the city that our house was in. As I scrolled through all the listings I came across something remarkable… someone had a glass negative from 1903 of a photo taken of the current owner and his family in front of our house. I bought it immediately. I was even able to arrange with the seller to pick it up in person that same day. They told me it was the last of a lot of glass negatives of houses in the area that they had bought to resell. Reselling on the internet is amazing.

Also Finnish,( from both sides of the family), and have been tracing my family tree as best I can. Dad's side has been the hardest, as since he was just shy of 50 when I was born, and his dad was almost 54 when dad was born, so just this 2 generation difference spans over a century. Something like this would have been so useful.

I purchased an 1850s webster's dictionary a couple years ago at an antique store. After bringing it home, I flipped through page by page to see if there was anything of interest hidden between the pages. I found a lot of flattened leaves and flowers, but the most interesting thing I found was a sort of business card. The name on it matched the original book owner's signature inside the front cover. I decided to share my find with my friends in my facebook group chat. That was when I found out the original owner of the book was my friend's great great grandfather. He scheduled a dinner with me and his family so I could reunite the book with them. His grandmother, who was the granddaughter of the original book owner recalled many stories of her grandfather. It was a very special evening.

I had a similar experience. I had from an antique shop an old family bible in German with writing and other family papers inside. It took me like 5 days, but I researched the family and found some descendants in another state. I wrote to them and asked if they wanted the Bible. They did, so I just mailed it to them for free. They were really grateful and excited. I know I have been in their position.

You're a good man, you should be proud. I don't want to come off as flippant b/c I know money is an issue for a lot of people but this is priceless to the buyer. Believe it or not you come to a time in your life where money isn't worth much to you anymore and you see it for what it is, numbers printed on paper. That book served as a link to their ancestors moral compass. When I was a younger man I sold a 1968 VW van to a man in Fla. on Ebay and I lived in Ohio. The day after the auction closed he called me about it and I was ready with my list of facts, or maybe he wanted more pics? He just asked if it had a middle seat, I said yes and he talked to a guy while on the phone with me about coming to get it, he said is "12 hours from now ok?" I said yes. He thanked me but before I hung up I said "wait a minute man", "what is the importance of the middle seat?" he said he was working on restoring one for his daughter, I said well then I could just sell you that. He paused and said "son, I have way more money than I do time". Then I thought he was crazy but now I look down at the old wrinkled hands that I don't believe could be mine typing this and I know what he meant. I believe there is only one thing an old man can say to young people, it goes really, really fast. If you're not careful you will miss it. I know that no young person can hear that and I just smile to myself. I apologize for the ramble. As a final thought a man named Horace Walpole describes this as "serendipity".

I connected through the internet with a woman who shared a single great, great grandfather with me. Her branch of the family had handed down his Bible from the early 1800’s, and the front pages of it contained handwritten records of the family’s births, deaths, & marriages. That Bible to me was absolutely priceless, and was the only ‘proof’ of the relationships of my ancestors from that era. I eventually gave them to my son for his shop. A couple came in and a very excited lady could barely contain herself. One of the hats had belonged to her late father! She was absolutely positive! The brand, size color and other marks were all correct! My son gave her the hat and it continues to be one of the stories he tells often. Oh by the way I found the hat in New Jersey and my son's shop is in New Hampshire ,the lady's dad had never been anywhere but New England. How that hat ended up here will forever be a mystery! 😊😊😊

Cool story! The finish language is not closely related with german. Unlike the other nordic languages (norwgian, danish, swedish) who are germanic languages, the finish language is part of the finno-ugric language group. This is a small and distant language group consisting of finish, hungarian, estonian, sami (a minority in the nordics) and some minority languages in Russia (such as karelian, veps and mansi). It is an interesting language group as it constis of most of the very few european languages not part of the indo-european language familiy. Finish, hungarian and estoinian are the only national languages in europe not part of the indo-european familiy.

WOW that’s so cool, I love it when a family is reconnected with part of their own family history. I use to watch a show where they would buy the contents of a lockup, that was until I realised when watching his video of his friend who bought a house knowing full well the contents was going to be worth 10-15 more than what he paid without telling the family the truth, they were grieving the loss of their father so they never even thought of going through the stuff he had bought. All of it were full on collectables worth millions and he bought the house and content for $159,000 he even haggled with them to knock the price down. So hearing you say you would have parted with it at basement cost was nice to hear. I watched as a friends home was cleaned out after she passed away and so much of it went into landfill things that these very children gave her over the years. Because of these two things happening it gave me the push to go through my own stuff and started to clean out what I knew to be junk and selling off the rest. I decided I would benefit from my own collections than have a total stranger going through it all.

I debate in fixing it or leaving it as is. But it's filled with the names of my grandmother's children, their marriages and children, my mother's children, mine and my brothers children and now my son's in law and grandsons. Generations live on in a book! It's a true treasure! To my childrens defense, I did the same with my Mom at their ages too. As we get older we learn the value of our families history. Knowledge is a powerful thing and knowing from where you came is awesome! Sadly for some, by the time they're ready to learn, everyone is gone.

I found a nude painting in a dumpster at a storage facility during a day of auctions, brought it back to my resale shop 60 miles away and put it for sale. A few weeks later a woman comes into our shop and with excitement says “that’s me, it was painted in the 80’s”! She buys the painting and comes back in an hour or so with her 1980’s drivers license and shows us her picture and it looked just like the painting. She said there were quite possibly contributing factors as to how she became a model and couldn’t remember who had painted it as the 80’s were still a bit of a fog. It was nice to bring a little clarity to her memories and she was happy to have the painting, I should add that it was very well done and in good taste.

I found a great painting in bad condition and a horrible frame, lovely little impressionist painting of a boy sitting on the grass with a farmhouse and fields stretching off into the distance. Turned out the boy was 98 when I contacted him about the painting, and a member of the Royal Academy, and the painting was by his mother who had her first showing at the Exhibition that summer, was commissioned to make this painting, finished it and a few months later died in a horse riding accident when the boy was seven. This was her only painting of him. He said he remembered the painting, 91 years later. I just sent it to him, even though I loved it too, there was no way I should keep it or even ask for money for it. Another time I met some of the family at the estate sale, their mom was making them buy what they wanted. I ran in and grabbed some great stuff, but speed being important did not examine everything carefully. Their father was a good artist, and there were some signed pieces for $20 leaning in a row against the wall so I just flipped through grabbing anything with a signature. Half hour later the daughter asked me if I had seen a painting of two dogs looking out a window, she was looking for her daughter who was in Japan because those were her dogs as a child so she very much wanted it. I said I had not seen it. Bought all my stuff and got home and looked through my stack of paintings...and I had the painting she was looking for, just had looked at it upside down and the painting style was a bit abstract. Luckily I knew their name and called her brother up and got the painting back to them for the twenty I paid for it. Would not want to make a few hundred bucks at the expense of a woman not having the painting her grandpa did of the dogs she loved.

Prior to the creation of the State's Departments of Vital Statistics, the family Bible was the principal method people used to keep records of the births and deaths. I have a prayer book that is about 50 years old, that holds the records of my children's births, as well as those showing the passing of my grandmother and parents. My records even included a couple of family pets that were precious to me.

When I come across items that have names on them (e.g., old photos, documents with names, places on them), I attempt to find a descendent. If I can't find a descendent, or get no response, I contact a historical/genealogical society to see if they want the items. I also had someone contact me with items they found at a yard sale that were from a distant cousin of mine and she sent me those items. It's called random acts of genealogical kindness.

In 2000, I posted a query on a genealogy forum asking about some ancestors and a few weeks later I was contacted by a thrift store across the country. They told me that someone had anonymously donated a box of old books and tintype photos. One of the books was an old bible published in 1829 and the names in it matched my query and that is why they contacted me. It turned out that it did belong to my ancestors and had dates of births, deaths, and marriages from before the Civil War that there was no other record of. I'm still amazed that it happened.

You just inspired me to locate a family in NH.... I was given an antique quilt my mom bought out in Long Island.... I did a little research to the name - and found a large population of this family lives in NH.... A handwritten in ink, mentions on the quilt itself, that it was pieced in 1879! Thank you!

I found, on eBay , my great grandfathers actual Miniing certificate ( basically his right to be a miner and proof that he’s qualified. Like a license basically but it was on paper similar to a birth certificate) I was just randomly on eBay , the guy selling had maybe 150 of all random people. But one of them matched my great grandfather perfect. Name. Date. Location. It’s his. Pretty wild. I bought it for my mom as s gift. I never met him. I want to say the certificate was roughly 1933. Roughly. This wasn’t a copy. This was the actual document that he put pen to paper and signed. Wild.

Amazing find! Yes, the Bible is in Finnish. The handwritten dedication says; Wedding memory, Ida and Emil Laurel, During adversity, this book is the best comfort in the storms of the world. J Mattila I have a similar Bible that is from 1895 from my paternal great grand mother but in much worse condition. Interesting that your's was printed in Berlin, Germany, maybe mine was too as I lack front and backpages. From the index page you show I can see that the page numbers of the books in the Bible are the same as in my Bible. Most families had one and there people wrote all important dates regarding family happenings as births, deaths etc. Finnish language is not related to most of the european languages other than hungarian, estonian and a few other language minorities in Russia. Before 1917 Finland was a part of Russia and before 1809 it was Swedish for almost 600 years why there is still a minority of Swedish speakers and that is reflected in the names written in your Bible as swedish names were popular back then.

I watch KZbin on my tv screen so it wasn't that difficult to stop the clip and just read and going back and forward a few times it only took a few minutes. So by comparing where the page number could be seen, like on page 277, I could see that the print was exactly the same as in my old Bible. My Bible is in a rough shape and lacks many chapter both in the beginning and the end and has only one textile cardboard front cover, no back and back cover so it was kind of neat to get a little more information. I've seen in old Bibles that sometimes the year of printing is different between old and new testament. In mine i found the year in the front of New testament. My mum taught me to read the both the old hand writing and print in Finnish even though I did not grow up in Finland. @@LJAG77

Same thing happened to me. I bought a few very old bibles at an estate sale, when I got home and started going through them, I came across one that was from early 1800’s. Inside were all the births, deaths, marriages etc. Because it was so incredibly beautiful, and had all the family history written in it, I felt that the sale of it could have been a mistake. I contacted the estate dealer, who then called the family, who eventually called me, it turned out it was very special to the family as I had suspected, and they didn’t mean to sell it. The owner came by my house and picked it back up, she wanted to pay me, but there was no way I was going to take her money. I’m an antiques dealer, and I paid good money for it, but that meant nothing to me, in comparison to making that woman happy, and keeping the history of their family where it should be…with the family.

It would have been awesome to present them at a family reunion- I had just started attending after more than a 40 years + of not attending. Grab your family history. Don’t lose it. Had a similar experience with one of our eBay finds. We found an antique Bible at an estate sale, and it had the whole family tree, and there was a recent entry from like the 1970s talking about the birth of this girl. We looked up her name and we found her in the UK and we talked to her about it and she was totally thrilled! We took the Bible off our eBay page and we just mailed it to her. It turns out she's a famous author and she sent us a couple signed books that she wrote along with some of the original artwork. As a picker I always look for those old old Bibles.

Family Bibles were historically so valuable not only because prior to the 1900s it might be the only book the family owned. It contained a record of all births, deaths and marriages usually. And many times children were taught to read using the family Bible. Because access to books in remote places was hard. It would have been passed down for generations, and is probably the only historical record many families had, apart from land deeds and such.

I have been into our family genealogy for many years. Over the years I have run across quite a few items at garage sales that were lost 'treasures' from other families and, with research, I've been able to reunite them with their lost families. I know what it would mean to me to have someone find and return a lost item from my family history so it makes me feel good to do the same when I can. The two things that stand out most are 1) a box full of documents and pictures from a family connected to Pennsylvania history and a handwritten page of the son of a survivor of the French & Indian War (all materials now in the collection of a PA museum); and 2) an album of postcards (many w/photos) sent from Sweden to a relative who immigrated to the Seattle area and now returned to an elderly relative in Sweden. I still keep looking!!!

I buy the bibles cheaply and research it for family. I then contact the family and send it to them for free. I have had people crying when I call them about their family bible, they thought it was destroyed. If it costs more than $20 I just ask for a reimbursement because I still have to ship it to them. My daughter lost her favorite stuffed rabbit in an airport when she was about 5 years old. She was devastated. My wife and I searched feverishly for many years, even harder once we gained the advantage of internet resources and could never find it or an identical replacement. Miraculously, we finally found an identical toy someone was selling used online. It turned out, when we discovered they were actually in the same area as the airport, that it was the very same rabbit she had lost. We presented it to our daughter about 20 years after she had lost it.
