I speak Nheengatú from Brazil, which is related to Guaraní. In Nheengatú, kariwa nheenga means the Portuguese language. But kariwa means literally white person, so it's "white people language". I guess it was the same in Guarani, but then karai changed from meaning white person to mister. Ah, just to mention, it's very similar for simple phrases. So "ñande ja'u pira" that appears in this video, in Nheengatú is said "yandé yambaú pirá" (we say ú for drinking, mbaú for eating). Yes, piranha comes from pirá + anha (=teeth), and in Nheengatú this word is also used for scissors. Some words are completely different though, like in Guaraní a chicken is ryguasu, from uru, a native bird + guasu (big). In Nheengatú we say sapukaya, from an old verb sapukái meaning to scream.

Well, Basque is not the most alien language for Indo-European speakers. Like yeah, it's considered* not to be related to any other language and it has atypical grammar elements for other European languages, but there are a lot endangered languages of Australia, Americas, Africa and Asia, which are really different from what the majority of English speakers (L1 or L2) have ever tried to study or even know about. *tho there are some -good- _some_ evidence presented by professor Juliette Blevins, suggesting that it is _possibly_ related to Indo-European languages. There's a two hour talk with her on Jackson Crawford's channel, in case you're interested.
@WGGplant
@WGGplant 2 ай бұрын
@@astrOtuba Thats not really evidence theyre related thats just possible cognates. It takes zero archaeological and genetic evidence into account, both which show that they were always seperate languages and people. i watched the same talk and agree that it's a very interesting topic. but even after that, im still not at all convinced in the slightest. hell id be more convinced that the proto uralic language was a cousin of PIE. Basque IS one of the most bizarre languages to PIE speakers because the grammar and vocabulary is alien in every way. The only thing not crazy about it is the phonology, which still has some crazy sounds from a PIE prospective. Many of these indigenous languages, have related languages with similarities to them. Not all but many. Basque having none, makes it more unique and obscure.
@astrOtuba
@astrOtuba 2 ай бұрын
@@WGGplant I've changed my wording to be more neutral. However, if I don't misremember, the result of her work wasn't just _possible cognates,_ but sound correspondences between PIE and internally reconstructed Proto-Basque. In terms of genetics, tho I haven't checked the sources, Wiki “Basques” page “Generic origin” chapter says they aren't really as different from other Europeans, especially if we compare Y- and Mitochondrial DNA.

Basque only spoken no more 1 Millon people, no is than popular languages
@astrOtuba
@astrOtuba Ай бұрын
@@Dcobosarenas The number of speakers isn't the solo factor that determines how many people desire to learn the language. Latin, Ancient Greek and Old Norse have no native speakers and a small amount of more or less fluent L2 speakers, but these are languages of great literature. Irish has only 70K daily speakers, but many would like to learn it because of their heritage. Duo has Latin, Icelandic, Gaelic, Welsh, Yiddish, Hawaiian, Esperanto and Klingon courses. Not all of them are great, but there are people who learn these languages in Duo or using different materials. I think the reason why Basque won't appear on the platform (at least in the near future) is I'm not sure if it has any brand outside of language nerd community. Like, there are definitely ethnic Basques who don't speak the language and would like to learn it, but courses for them would be in Spanish and French. But maybe Duo will add it eventually just because it would attract some polyglots and media attention

Try speedrunning some languages on Duostories, a crowdsourced version of Duolingo stories! There's quite a few extra languages: even not counting conlangs, they have Albanian, Asturian, Faroese, Frisian, Kannada, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mirandese, Nynorsk, Old English, Serbian, Silesian, Tagalog, Telugu, and Tetum! (I'm not sponsored, I just found out about the site while learning Mini and wanted to give them a shoutout)

Sometimes you hear random people in the public transport speaking Guarani, to each other or to their phones. Usually very quickly and very loud, I wonder if they are speaking with their deaf grandparents, load.

It's unlisted from the course selection menu, because it's not as well developed as other courses, and it's not a target language for the majority of platform users, so they've hidden it to avoid misleading people onto thinking it's as good as others and wiring complains. At the moment if you want to study it, you have to open the course's link (google “duolingo guarani”, it will be the first one) and it will appear in your course list.
