I've spent the past 10 years learning Spanish. From knowing literally zero Spanish, to speaking Spanish every single day (plus moving to Mexico and falling in love with a latina), these are the things I wish I had known when I first started learning the language. Thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.

👋 Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

I have a B.A. in Spanish that i got in 1993. The key to learning how to speak Spanish is to make sure you never worry about what you have said being "right" or "wrong" just keep speaking and you will never regret it!

Getting mistaken for someone who lives in the country of your target language is such a thrill! When I was in Egypt speaking Arabic, many people thought that I was living/working in Cairo (as a foreigner). In fact, my first time in the Middle East as this short 3-week trip. I was glowing! :-D I even had someone approach me for directions, which I couldn't help out with, but that was a nice ego boost too.

Like anything else, learning Spanish is the most difficult and frustrating in the beginning. But if you push through for long enough to have a simple foundation of vocabulary and understanding of the how the grammar works, like maybe intermediate level, it becomes very fun and enjoyable. Studying isn’t usually the fun part, but it’s all well worth it when you get to start using what you know with real people.

Great video with some of the greatest language learning advice I have heard in the last 40 years!! I learned German as a young soldier in the 80s when I was in posted Germany, and learned it fluently without even thinking much about it. It just happened as they say to the point where native speakers would often asked me if I am from around Munich area. Fast forward 40 years and I applied the same concepts and principles when I started learning Spanish a few years ago, but with the Internet it's a game changer. Like you said ego is everything. Now days I speak Spanish every day all day with my Colombian wife and I'm continually asking questions. We never stop learning! Suerte a todos ;))

I understood the first part of the question at 6:02. Nate you said “Si tú hubieras nacido en un país de hablas hispana como te redes de español. Como podrías hacer eso desde tu casa. When you said “hispana” I thought it was spelled like this “espana” like the country “España” lol. But I realized it was “hispana”. But my responds is, like you’ve taught us “consume a lot of music, and speak to ourselves.”

I'm about to travel to Mexico for the first time to meet my Wife's extended family, and I'm nervous because I know very little Spanish. I've tried learning in the past, but I think due to my Traumatic Brain Injury from my deployment in 2010-2011 it makes it more difficult for me to retain things. Hopefully being in Mexico for a week and a couple days will help me a little bit more.

Hoy aprendi algo nuevo contigo Nate, muchas gracias. Siempre supe que la noria era la rueda con la que se sacaba agua de los pozos; nunca la asocie con la Ferris Wheel. En Cuba; donde naci; la conociamos como Estrella Giratoria. Like you've said, we always learn something new, even in our own mother's tongue. Surprisingly though, some of us claim to speak 20 languages. Vampires maybe? 300+ years old?

My issue is that I am generally a quiet individual, preferring not to talk excessively. As I have been learning Spanish through music, KZbin pranks on the street, and the app Busuu, it has not been very helpful for me. Although my listening comprehension has significantly improved, it doesn't assist me when I want to express myself, as I often lack the appropriate words, experiencing something like temporary amnesia in those moments. Moreover, not speaking much makes it challenging for me to engage in conversations, as I've noticed that Spanish speakers tend to be quite talkative, and one must sometimes interrupt them to contribute one's own thoughts; this is based on my personal experience so far.

¿si tú hubieras nacido en un país de habla hispana, como te rodearías de español? ¿Como podrias hacer eso desde tu casa? If you had been born in a Spanish-speaking country, how would you surround yourself with Spanish? How could you do that from home? Mi respuesta es... Pues, en primer lugar, estaría rodeado de eso todo el tiempo, así que creo que sería bastante fácil ya que todo en mi vida tendría que ver con español.

One thing that I’m finding is that all my Spanish-speaking friends here in America try to always speak English! I’m not sure why, maybe because it’s our native language or maybe because they’re embarrassed by the way I talk. It’s a real bummer and frustrating sometimes.

It's not embarrassment. Most of the time it's just the issue of not being able to understand what you said. It's easier to just find people who don't speak English fluently and try learning through them.
