Wow! As an Indian who has done these sleeper bus trips several times, it is art to sleep in these buses. I do get decent sleep since I mostly book in the lower deck where the throwing around is lesser. In any case, these buses are a bit dangerous, since some of these drivers do not get enough sleep before the next trip. I would highly recommend to stay away from overnight buses. I myself stopped taking them long ago. It is not worth taking the risk.

I recently did Goa-Hyderabad on upper bunk, and the roads of Karnataka were hell and this upper bunk added to all the more aboard Intrcity Service. Roads got better once the Bus entered Telangana/Mumbai-Hyderabad Highway. So please stop this North South it's about Service You choose. This service was for Ahmedabad and Gujarat falls in West 🇮🇳. if You look at the condition of Roads they were 4-6 laned Roads. Unfortunately the condition of the Bus by Bharat Benz not compatible for long Journeys as it is fuel efficient therefore the greedy Zingbus operator( it is 1 among the famed Service though) seems scam bug. Else M. R Bus Service would have been a great option indeed. Volvo, Scania, Mercedes etc are real Time cozy includes Sleeper/semi sleeper of State owned Services by Haryana Roadways, Himachal Rtc, Rajasthan, Punbus, Up & Uttarkhand etc. If You will Travel towards North belt (Chandigarh, Manali, Jammu, Ameristar, Shimla, Jaipur etc) this would not be the same as commented by You. If You Travel by Intrcity, Indo-Canadian, Laxmi Holidays, Southern Travels, Reo Travels etc. Therefore it depends upon Quality of Bus Service and Route. It's not about North or South. ☮

No need to apologize for staying in comfortable accommodations after a rough trip in the elements. These trips are a marathon and they will wear you completely out unless you take care of yourself, get good rest, eat well, and then there is the security issue as a foreigner in a foreign land where there are known traps and pitfalls. I loved that bus advertisement though -- that was the most lavish embellishment of a bus I think Ive ever seen!

Just a random thing I learned in my marketing class. So the reason the bus is Bharat Benz and not Mercedes Benz was that when Daimler truck launched its bus range in India, it understood the need for affordable vehicles in the Indian automobile industry and Benz was always associated with expensive in India. To succeed in a highly competitive, indigenous brand first market, they rebranded themselves as Bharat Benz to appeal more to the minds of the consumers. Thus making it one of the most successful marketing strategies in the country.

I can't really imagine how hard it'd be for me to ride a bus for 24 hours if it was a bus with no air-conditioning in the Philippines, but oh my goodness, how cool is it to have a bed on this bus! I'd personally go with this one for 24 hours of the two options. As for the traffic, wow, it just seems like India's traffic seems worse than traffic in the Philippines especially in Manila! Anyway, the good thing is that at least the ride this time around all the way to Ahmedabad didn't get cancelled, and at least you didn't have to get on a flight just for the sole purpose of finishing the remainder of the trip unlike the USA bus trip to NYC.

It's hilarious how is in absolute misery and still manages to end the sentence with "but nevermind". I could almost see the positivity unravel. But... goodness gracious great balls of fire..... Cheers.

I've been enjoying the delights of Indian driving for the last three weeks. You have to take your western driving head off when driving here. It's totally different. All street signs and road markings are just for decoration. Roundabouts are optional. Even traffic lights seem optional for motorbikes, as does driving on the left. Of course, being on something as big as a bus, you have right of way at all times...... Except to cows I'd rather fly.

I am Indian living in the US for 25 years. I have been driven in a hired cab for one week around the same roads. While the roads can get bumpy if you are traveling by some of the smaller roads in towns, the interstates are quite smooth and of high quality. The bus that you took is of lower quality, lacking the double rear axles that are usually found on quality sleeper buses. However, that’s what makes your video all the more interesting, coz this sort of experience is what I grew up with, in India. 😄👍

Well, an update: I visited India last month, and remembering this video, took a bus overnight from Pune in Maharashtra to Dharwad in northern Karnataka. It was a Volvo AC double axle sleeper bus. One of the worst travel experiences. Ever. 😄 Bumpy, vey noisy (diver kept loudly honking, like every 3-4 ministers 😣), and no toilet in the bus. To top it all, the driver swerved so much, all the passengers were rolling from side to side like sausages rolled in a pan 😆. Never again. 😑

“Why do all the horns play tunes?” Exactly what I’ve always wondered 😂 it’s the same in Pakistan as well (as is a lot of things in India in fact)! Not much of a surprise there considering the cultural similarities between both countries. Hope you can try one of these luxury bus services or train journeys across the border as well Noel!

@Noel Philips The worry I mostly have while traveling in these long haul buses (which I avoid, btw) is them not stopping frequently and someone stealing your luggage while you get down to get some food / drink in one of these stops. I appreciate you enduring this journey to know what it is like to be in one of these buses. I'm sure you know better now.

As known from the New Delhi episode of Don't Drive Here, India's position is that whoever is ahead (even if just by the front bumper) has the right of way when changing lanes. As your Uber was ahead, it was the responsibility of the other driver to avoid any impact.

I used to commute a little over an hour on a highway coach, it was always very lightly loaded, and the rear row spanned the whole bus, allowing for a makeshift bed. Got myself one of those inflatable pillows, and always managed about an hour of shuteye on it. You get used to it.

The three wheeled taxis you rode in are called tuk-tuk's in S.E. Asia. I drove one of these things in the dead of Winter back in 1970 in Cleveland Ohio. I was supervising the shut down of Alcoa's ingot mill and getting all the scrap aluminium loaded onto boxcars so the metal could be shipped to other Alcoa plants. Most of the metal was stored outside in steel bins. The tuk-tuk I had was bicycle steering, three speed column shift, four stroke air cooled engine. Driving it around in the dark in 6 inches of snow up and down hills was a bit of a challenge. The guys driving fork trucks in the snow was a real eye opener. As I have lived in rural Australia for the past fifty years the sight of Indian city traffic was horrifying! My dad spent WW II in Bangalore India and I doubt if he saw traffic like that.

The pictures I've seen of Indian traffic in the 80s or so were, in their way, even worse. A modest number of cars trucks and tuk-tuks shared the road with a few animals and _throngs_ of people, as in you couldn't see the road surface for people! To my eyes, the traffic in this video actually looked safer, for the most part.

I used to do this on the Megabus between London and Scotland (I say used to, I mean, once) and it was quite an experience. They pulled them though because of competition from air. A Damn shame as I could do with it on a Saturday night when the sleeper train doesn't run.

In my first visit to India I arrived with 2 friends in Chennai in November 1978 and we went by train from there to Delhi. It was a good introduction to India. In many visits since I've mostly travelled by train. Last visit was 2012 though, with age I find that kind of travel a bit difficult.
