Possibly the most relatable video on KZbin?

This is very relatable, and not just to Dreams, but to any long term creative undertaking. One way of looking at it is through the lens of Flow theory. The trick, if there is one, is to find the balance between challenge and your skill level, while making sure you have tangible long and short-term goals, get constant and relevant feedback (i.e. you see your game progress). And most importantly, doing what you do for intrinsic reasons rather than extrinsic ones. If you want to be able to commit to something as complex as making a game for a long period of time, you have to be able to enjoy it, and that's where finding that balance between skills, challenge, goals and feedback really helps. But that, of course, is easier said than done

Well said. Now you mention it, I've never burnt out during development of games where I genuinely felt that flow state. Usually only afterwards, when trying to do something else without the same drive. The hard part is figuring out in the moment whether a project fits the criteria. I usually end up arguing with myself, which gets me nowhere of course because I'll find some way to justify it. Difficult but I hope to get better at this whole thing!

Keep going mate. I understand how you've come to feel. I started from your base fps puppet to use in my dream that I haven't published yet. I learned a lot of things by watching how you built it and made some modifications to adapt it to the style of my game. It took months of work to get what I needed, logic is not my strong point. I feel more comfortable in the design and creation of levels, gameplay and story. I have done 90% of the entire game and had the collaboration of 2 collaborators and friends for the creation of assets and everything related to voice acting.

I would have liked to have a collaborator like you for the logic of your puppet and an animation specialist, so that everything would be even better. Anyway I am very happy with the result and now I am waiting for the new update of the stickers, to be able to include them. The game is already finished, there is a demo, created for DreamsCom available with the intro and the first 2 scenes. If you want to take a look at it, it's called EPSILUM. Thank you for your contributions to the community.

Good to see your back at it! I definitely take breaks from Dreams due to burnout. I feel defeated when my project goes nowhere or just spirals into something that I didn't really want. I barley plan my projects and usually start off with a small idea or vision. When I come back to it later, it's often better than I remember and create something even better than expected. Great memory capsule for sure. 🤘

Can you make a video about what you learned about third person rigs in dreams. Tight third person action games are the one thing in dreams i just cant figure out. Your game seems to have very good mechanics
@intrattackout
@intrattackout 2 жыл бұрын
Third person rigs are definitely more difficult than FPS, yeah. I recommend experimenting with Tapgiles' third person camera. Having direct signals you can use and a camera to animate around is necessary! Most important is to give the puppet high acceleration so it's responsive, but a lot of that 'tight' feel in combat comes from hit feedback (my R&C and Uncharted video both go into that). Might do a video on Dreams TPS in the future, but first I want to at least release one such game!

Scrapped work is always time well spent. Keep up the good work! If you're ever in the mood to take on something smaller, my game is always open to collaborators. It really needs an aim-assist system 😅I have a Discord with a Quest Board of smaller tasks that I haven't gotten around to or can't figure out that any collaborator is welcome to take on.

....Jouw verhaal in dit filmpje is de story of my life. Verlies mezelf in allerlei trivialiteiten. Of eigenlijk gewelddadige games.

I think you should collaborate with other people on Dreams focusing on what you are good at. I find myself more committed when surrounded by people with whom I share a goal. I think this is where Dreams failed, it failed to bring people togeter.

True, Dreams remains a very isolated experience. I definitely plan to collab more in the future, though from experience so far it can also have its issues associated with it. Let's just say I'll choose my collaborators carefully haha

i hope you’re doing well and I know this isn’t the perfect time to ask but I can’t find it anywhere and I can’t figure it out myself. I’m trying to make a directional damage indicator, basically an arrow that points toward the damage source, kinda like in call of duty. I know this is possible since in the vr demo they had a thing that points to something you’re supposed to look at. If you know how to do this please tell me in the comments or contact me in discord. Thanks alot.👍

Maybe surround your player with a trigger zone that plays an arrow animation when activated by an enemy projectile?
@nemesis021
@nemesis021 Жыл бұрын
@@pheel7142 I already tried that and it works fine enough but most of the time it doesn’t really help because it shows only in 4 directions. There really seems like no way to do this unless I do like a titanfall 2 style where I have an arrow that’s in game and it points to the direction the damage source. But I admit that type of thing is completely out of my skills. But I have been trying this where since u can make a wiper point to something maybe I could make it work somehow?
@pheel7142

@@nemesis021 I only do a bit of sculpting here and there to be honest, so logic and all that is beyond me at the moment.. my suggestion was just something that felt plausible.. actually glad that works lol.. is there some way you can duplicate the 4 directions and rotate it to make 8?
@nemesis021
@nemesis021 Жыл бұрын
@@pheel7142 I could make the 4 zones overlap so that 2 arrows could be shown at the same time and hope the player would figure it out. Or I could do some more logic to make it show an arrow tilted at a 45 degree angle. Good to know that you sculpt a lot since I’m more of a gameplay designer. Would rather to make fun scenarios than try to model anything because I am absolute shit at it.
