This is wild, if they ported these tools and solutions to PC/Mac and created a game engine and business model like Unity with the ability to export full games for at least PC/Mac (eventually consoles) with revenue share on big success and maybe an asset store they could have a multi billion dollar business. The ability to create an entire 3D game with as little as a playstation controller is mind boggling.

I'd argue that dreams is a game engine. You mentioned that most games made in it are slop. Well that's true of just about any game engine. On the topic of multiplayer. They are fun. But there are still people who want the single player experience. that has been proven over the past few years. the idea that people only want multiplayer is starting to dip your toes into that "people only want live service games". That's a dangerous road. There was a triple A studio that said they were done with single player games and they shot themselves right in the foot. Then there's the statement "you're wasting your time in dreams. you should learn a real engine like UE or Unity" Things like this have always bothered me. A tool is a tool. and a game engine is a tool. I've also found a good portion of those people who say "use a game engine" are people who never built a game from start to launch. They basically tech demo an engine. In terms of monetization. This is another one of those things when it comes to using assists from all over. We make it sound like it's a bad thing to grab something from a assist store. Look at the UE store. It's massive. the Unity store, hell, even the Game Maker assist store is huge. Most people grab things from there and create something. This is actually something I really enjoy. You're in a studio without being in a studio. I mean. are we going to seriously think that even the triple As are not pulling from these stores? How many times have we seen the same tree? the same crate? the same textures? the indies are guilty as well as the triple are guilty of grabbing assists from wherever they can get it. The thing that hurt dreams was the fact it was trapped on console hell. and the creators weren't allowed to sale their games on whatever platform. what hurt it was it not being on PC and that's a fact. Sony could have sold this for 100 bucks, gave the devs the license to sale their games.

Something about spending time with your friends browsing all the cool games people slapped together in LBP2 is a really core memory honestly. I wish I could play it and see all the games that have popped up in it since, but I doubt it's possible today. Dreams though, it never really garnered much interest in me. Its level catalogue seemed about the same as LBP2's but I had no drive to ever give it a shot after seeing it in a few videos.

Dreams is brilliant, it's like the youtube of games. Everyone has the tools to create whatever you want and post it. But unlike youtube, game development is extremely tedious. Spending thousands of hours to perfect your 1 level platformer, just to get a couple likes, then you ask yourself "what am I doing? I could have learned actual skills with the amount of time I wasted on dreams!!" Still it was a revolutionary idea, and perhaps with AI Dreams/ game development will be even easier.

Dreams didn't have the charm of LBP, and LBPs limitations is what made it good. Besides if you were going to take the time learning Dreams then you might as well use Unreal Engine or Unity

Kojima games are special, because they are in their own league. Even is a scene or a line is bad, it just cannot bother me for long because of how amazing aaaaaaall the others things are. I know very little games that don't have frustrating or bad moments. But who cares if the rest of the game is amazing? Yeah, that part was shit - now I'm gonna continue and enjoy the 99% of the game that is amazing. And I couldn't agree more with your statement about stopping hating on games and starting listening to yourself. I learned the hard way to stop doing that, because I gave SW Outlaws a chance and it turned out to be way, waaaaaay better than the videos on YT made it out to be. And... same with DA Veilguard as well, which I also decided to give a chance because something simply made me attracted to this game. Not gonna lie, stopping hating on games feels pretty good.

Not gonna lie, the tone of those dialogues literally feel like straight from Teletubbies. I like cutesy games, but this is just childish. Shame they went with that cause this game is probably the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed.

I just got Dreams a day ago. I never even heard about it. I was a huge fan of lbp and would've loved to check out this game if I knew it existed and was made by Media Molecule. It's really a shame it didn't get more popular. It's amazing. But I do remember people criticizing lbp for moving more towards being a game creation engine instead of a platformer with a cute sack person. I think just not enough people wanted what the game provides, no matter how great it is at providing that

I really am going to miss you and your dreams videos/content. The moment I heard Dreams "pull the plug" so to speak, I was just completely dumbfounded and discouraged. I saw the enormous potential of Dreams. I sold my PS4 so I could get the PS5 where I expected Dreams to fully thrive. Now my PS5 sits and collects dust. It saddens me greatly that Dreams failed. I will say, there is a newer software that isn't as powerful as dreams but does have a similar setup with sculpting and logic. The software I am referring to is Meta's Horizon Worlds. It has a similar visual programming language to Dreams and you can sculpt new assets (sort of) that you can then create logic that attaches to said object. The game is mainly geared toward VR, but can be played on your phone and pc. It is best in a Quest 2 or Quest 3 headset. You can make all sorts of games and mechanics within this software. The downside is it doesn't have a full music mixer/editor. It doesn't have the most elaborate sfx editor or animation editor. Most of the animations you can do in this a basic translation movements. The game automatically simulates what your character's animations look like as you walk around in the vr format. It is a live service software so at any time they could add these other features; however, if you are coming over from Dreams, don't expect the whole gambit of stuff. Still has a long ways to go before it can be even considered on par with Dreams. But it does feel like it is heading in that direction. If Meta can get there with Horizons, then I will happily forget dreams and move on; especially if Mm doesn't make a Dreams 2. If Mm makes Dreams 2 and adds multiplayer, quadruple+ thermo space, render distance tools (for pop-ins and LOD shaders), etc. Then I would be more than happy to return to Dreams. But if Horizons gets to where Dreams was and then some, then Dreams will be a mere memory.

The thing that really bothers me is they didn't even try to enable multiplayer in the private lobby sense. Sure dedicated servers were the want and desire. But at the very least they could have enabled my Dreams connect to someone else's dreams where we could then hop into a game together or we could start collaborating on a project. Literally no servers would be needed as the host's private playstation would be the "server" as long as that player was connected to dreams. I know this type of tech exists because games like Ark do this. You can host a dedicated server. And you can host a non-dedicated server. The latter server was only on when your playstation or pc was on and connected to the game. They could have at the very least enabled this for up to 4 players without it costing any resources to servers. I hate that they literally just gave up on this. I only stopped using dreams because I was in a transition period between PS4-PS5. I sold my 4 so I could get the 5 under the idea that Dreams would upgrade to a PS5 version, with increased thermo, multiplayer, etc. Although none of this was ever fully committed to, it was just expected to happen cuz, why wouldn't you take advantage of the enhanced hardware? My Dream was to create open world games with all the ambitions in the world. For how powerful dreams was, it still had a great amount of limitations if you ever wanted to do a large open world game. Sure some creators found the secret for making large worlds, but they all had to compromise the scope of their game for the world size. I was certain that with a PS5 version of Dreams, Large detailed, open worlds were finally going to be possible and that my ambitious dreams could finally become a reality. I really want to hear from Mm and see what their new project entails. If it isn't LBP and if it isn't Dreams, then is it going to be a new UGC software? or are they going to go in a completely different direction? This is what scares me. They have the most incredible software for media creation, yet are just going to abandon it? I just don't see how that can make any sense. Surely we will have Dreams level UGC in a new IP. Right? or is this wishful thinking? If it is wishful thinking, then my dreams became a huge nightmare...

Question : does the experience you acquire in Dreams can be useful on other 3D engines ? Or is it too different?
@intrattackout6 күн бұрын
Dreams does teach you a way of thinking with logic that's very applicable to other engines. Also in Dreams you start developing a bunch of soft skills (knowing how to design a level, how to avoid feature creep, how to troubleshoot) way faster than you'd do in traditional engines. That all said, of course ''real'' engines have much more going on. It's like learning piano and music theory, and then picking up guitar. You'll know what sounds good, you'll know how to write a song. But the first months of guitar will probably be a frustrating mess of trying to get your physical playing skills to catch up with your creative skills.

I think they should allow people to sell their games if they wanna. Nowadays monetization is a big thing and girls get paid just for flapping their mouth.... or their cheeeks lol. Spending hundreds of hours creating those cool games deserve more for those who want. I loved creating stuff on it tho, maybe they should release it on all platforms... but i still wonder, how the devs make money from this game ??

There’s a lot of people talking about Dreams in the past tense like it “was” great. Just a reminder you can still download Dreams for free if you have a PlayStation Plus Premium and once you have Dreams you get a library of thousands of user generated games and creations and you can do things that are way more intuitive and faster than 99% of actual creative software that are “industry standard” e.g. waiting for weeks to render a few seconds of animation. Dreams can achieve the same image in real time. I’m still using it and making money with Dreams cause I don’t have to wait hours to render out client work. I think Dreams being on the PlayStation really warps people’s perceptions that Dreams is a “video game”. Dreams is actually a creative software more closer to Blender than people think and has real time features that many software can’t even do yet. It truly is software from the future, that imo is far ahead of time for its own good…nobody knows how to use it and Mm or Sony didn’t even know how to market it. Dreams is what creative software will be in 10 more years but it’s already here. And you can purchase it once (without any monthly subscription based plans like Adobe, Autodesk or go through any giant learning curves like Blender, Unreal Engine 5).

People just want to build fun levels and fool around on them in multiplayer. That's why LBP was perfect. Passionate creators who want to create complexe games already have powerfull engines thus no reason to learn and use dreams. That's why Dreams failed to find its audience. Sculpture, music composition, drawing, animation, writing, voice acting, coding. All these are jobs that take years to learn. The majority of people can't do these thing and thus are stuck with a powerful but useless tool with Dreams. While LBP allowed creation for everyone.

Man I grew up in my teens investing checks into supplies for my drawings, molding clay, painting and writing I used to be the kid who thought when playing games “how cool it would be to make something like this” then around 2020 I found this and it was literally a “dream” come true for my “creative hungry mind” it’s a shame it met it’s end but I’m not giving up on it completely
