i went to the gentle barn a few years ago, there was an emu there that would continuously target and follow you until you pet him. he especially enjoyed being scratched on the neck. buttercup was there when i went a few years ago, she had just got there and was fairly uncomfortable around large groups so they had separated her and had her in the back of the cow area in her own temporary private stall and you would go see her in groups of two. the gentle barn is such an amazing place and i 100% recommend going!

I don't know if anyone has heard the news yet, but butter cup has sadly passed away. She was old and happy and they think it was a heart attack. She was fine one minute and gone the next, quick and painless. My heart goes out to the people you loves and took care of her. I just thought I'd let everyone know. Oh yes definitely understand the need for them to have entry payments and donations because cows etc are not cheap to feed and take care of! I'm not personally a fan of zoos etc but its the equivalent of me going to a zoo. Never think a lot of city people have never seen or been round a cow or pig lol

It's interesting to see what's normal to people. I'm a city girl but I'm in the UK and you're never really far from the countryside wherever you are, so even if I don't see livestock type animals all the time, I've still encountered them. It's strange to think of someone Juliens age never really meeting one before, but then I paid to meet alpacas not long ago and I'm sure some people think that's bizarre.

My parents have a farm (well it mostly a big tomato garden but they also keep chickens as pets and for eggs), and my dad once rescued three giant food-bred turkeys. They were deemed to scrawny to sell as meat and were just going to be killed for fertilizer, so my dad yelled "I'll take them!" and built them a coop. They lived the rest of their lives safe from the chopping block and predators, well-fed and spoiled rotten by my parents and becoming best friends with our chickens.

Hi! Long time vegetarian.. first time vegan for the past month. I used to have cheese in nearly every one of my meals. Just wanted to reach out to you & let you know I wish someone had told me how simple it is to be vegan. & also wanted to say it's not about necessarily being 'vegan'. Maybe just try some new dairy-free recipes every once in a while to show how simple it can be :) Also-I don't eat the fake cheese/tofu/soy products -they irk me but I am still getting my daily vitamins & minerals without supplements. I really feel like support system is key, even if it's just following vegan Facebook pages/groups. And a great benefit of being vegan (other than to your body and for the earth *animal agriculture is #1 agitator of climate change by quite a bit*) is that you don't have to worry about contributing to the horror hell of slaughterhouses and the general life of a factory farmed animal. There're so many replacements that're great, and if money's an issue, there's lots to learn on that as well. Okja on Netflix is also a good movie that might help you along as well. Let me know if you have any questions! I have lots of information! And any step is better than nothing.

my old principle owned a farm full of rescued animals and at the end of every school year a block of grades got to visit for the day and see all the animals and pet and feed them. it was cool cause she had lots of stuff like lemurs, koalas, camels, highland cows, like every marsupial animal, buncha kittens to sit and pet, and then a bunch of farm animals youd expect in southern canada. also had it not been for all the snakes we could hold and pet i probably would be afraid of them but theyre really cool! she had a bunch of terrariums in her office and on our birthdays we could go in and play with and hold her smaller snakes, not her pythons. it was also cool seeing a lemur on her shoulder in school on a random given day

lovebug ♥ I had an english mastiff growing up :) her name was Eddie and the was the most gentle, sweet giant I ever met. Miss her every day :( I used to lie with her as I fell asleep and stroke her suuuper soft ears. She was so big but came from an abused past so she was terrified of grown men and she would hide in our back garden whenever a man came over. Not a great guard dog, even if she did weigh like 70kg.. Anyways lol. Never seen anyone else who even knows what an English mastiff is so I thought I'd share :)

Yeah, my grandparents have a great dane, her name's Mazie. Love that dog. I guess my family just love big dogs. I know there's a lot of stereotypes, like, how pitbulls are "mean". They really aren't. I believe that it's up to the owner's behavior, for ex. if the owner is mean, the dog is likely to be mean too. Dogs can sense emotions. Atleast that's what I think.

Just a word of procaution. If you are ever in the country and you see farm animals. Do not, I repeat do not approach the animals and pet them. There's a possibility that you can pass on a germ than can make the animals very sick or could even possible kill them. The only reason you can pet them in a petting zoo is because those animals are exposed to a lot things and become more immune to the bugs. Thanks to anyone who reads this.

that's really cool you went and experienced that. we're up in vancouver, canada and went to a local farm sanctuary too and ended up filming a documentary about it (its on our channel called becoming vegan) I totally get what you mean about feeling so positive and peaceful when you're there. its so easy to feed off the animal's good energy :)

Having to work with cows and other farm animals really puts into perspective how much love they actually need, I do animal care at College and it's wonderful to see how happy they can actually be.
