I've been away recently - first to Rome as you saw last week, and then to Cornwall. So here's all the books that greeted me when I arrived home!
My name's Tom and I'm an antiquarian bookseller. To browse my stock of rare books and manuscripts, visit my website: www.tomwayling.co.uk

Absolutely. Abandoned on a desert island, I'd read the label on a tin of beans until I knew it by heart.

As an 80-year old book lover I can so relate to this. Visting my small town local public library recently (it's also a contact point for social services) I had a wander around. And discounting the fashionable media and digital services avaliable, I left in little doubt I have more books (and better books) than they do. My major regret these days - rarely leaving a recliner - is that I can't enjoy the second joy of my life behind reading. And that's wandering around old book shops so long that sheer embarrassment dictates I buy something. And that collection you just unboxed? I'm off to sulk!

When I was 14 I fulfilled my high school work-experience at the local library HQ. At the end of the week I got first dibs on the huge book sale of volumes being taken out of circulation. I picked up the first 10 parts of The Complete History of Middle Earth, first editions. I imagine they have little monetary value as they have library stamps in them. It tickled me that the library had first editions in circulation, they are a nice memory and a fun talking point on my shelf, just wish they had all 12.

I love your enthusiasm for all things JRRT, but I rrad the LOTR books in cheap paperback editions back in 1971 and stopped there (ok, I saw the Peter Jackson films). But at Hatchards last week I came across a paperback copy of one of his academic medieval studies (didn't buy it - too esoteric even for me). One of my university profs was also a medievalist, an authority on the Pearl Poet, and he was friends on that level with JRRT. I have a suitcase full of paperbacks I've been hunting which are flying back to the US with me Cheaper than international shipping!

Loves these videos, there’s needs to be more book collectors out there! Is there a market for American writers in the Uk? Maybe for classics like Faulkner, Twain, Hemingway, Lovecraft etc, but also contemporaries like McCarthy, Le Guin, DF Wallace, S. King… or are there deals to be had on those writers? Also, do you see many older editions of Thomas Taylor, Goethe, Laboulaye, Blavatsky, Jung, or older Alchemical/theurgical works? Cheers from Canada, keep up the great work.

Wow. Great jjobb with these finds. 😮 I think you have our dream job 😊 except for the hard work and price negotiations. Too much Tolkien! Sorry to be such a philistine, but I wouldn't give you tuppence for any Tolkien and I've had a go at reading them all, never got beyond a few pages. I can see your delight, Tom, in finding a particularly wanted item for an individual customer. I have been such a customer searching for items for years that were valuable to me, mainly for my own research needs, and finally lighting on a title after years of searching is such a joy. I've got one such item on the way to me at the moment from a Dutch specialist seller in the history of science and just can't wait to receive it. About three years ago I located a copy of a really rare title in German that not even the British Library owns! It is wonderful fun to be able to make such a boast to other book-lovers and they always share in my delight. I absolutely agree that there is no such thing as spending too much money on books. I love your enthusiasm and delight in the importance of the books that you handle. You really know what they will mean to your customers, don't you?
