Another thing regarding the illustrations is that they are placed chronologically at the points in the text that they occur. For instance, the Queen screaming at Alice appears directly above the text in the book where she says "Off with her head!" Unfortunately, most contemporary publishers aren't observant of this aspect at all, and end up placing the illustrations wherever they want (and by that, I mean in the correct chapters, but not necessarily aligned with the text they're intended to go with).

Carroll had originally intended to illustrate the published version himself but was dissuaded from doing so by several people, most notably John Ruskin. Hiring Tenniel was a good business decision, too, because, as the illustrator for Punch, he was far more famous than Carroll was in 1865 and much of the book's early success can probably be attributed to him.
@Al1987ac5 ай бұрын
So the version with Caroll's illustrations is unofficial? Or he decided to publish it after initial success with Tenniel?
@ragnarlodbrok91865 ай бұрын
@@Al1987ac 'Alice's Adventures Under Ground' only existed in a single manuscript copy until 1886, at which point Carroll (or at least Macmillan) decided to publish it in facsimile.

I held the Alice owned by the real Alice. A wonderful book collector in the US, said it is among his favorite in his vast collection. He also has a SHakespeare first folio, and let us touch it turn pages and be in awe. He understands what books mean, to book lovers. My visit to his private library still is one of the top experiences of my life. It was like meeting famous people, only BETTER. He was so generous to his visitors, the library is protecting and caring for some of the world's most precious objects, and during a birthday party, which was for a wonderful man, the "entertainment" after was a visit to his library. He served WINE including red. I noticed no one carried red wine around! But, know, there is a wonderful fabulous human being, who is preserving and has gathered one of the best (if not the best) private collection in the world. Who shared his riches with a simple teacher, myself, who loves books.

I’m getting a serious late 1960s Sgt. Pepper feeling from the new Alice edition. Kind of appropriate as Alice is rather psychedelic

I had a friend who worked for the Harry Ransom Center from the late 1970s until her retirement about 20 years later. While she was there they bought a collection of Alice In Wonderland related books and ephemera. Some of those items were really weird and from what she described, it is weird to think there might be other copies of these items.

I read and reread Alice as a kid and have read it since as an adult, which is a much different read. I had a reproduction of the early book with the beautiful illustrations in the right place. To have seen the original pass at the book must have been amazing, though I can’t imagine it without the Cheshire Cat whose illustration scared me as a child, or the Mad Hatter, whose weirdness fascinated me. I’ve seen exerts from the recent stage version and wish I could see the while production. The new book is lovely, but I’m sticking to by much beloved old Alice.

The Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges once pointed out that the Alice adventures, which end up having been dreams, are more precisely nightmares. He might have had a point: virtually every episode produces anxiety, and she wakes up screaming - or at least crying out in fear.

Yes, some research libraries and archives conserve some copies of that original 1865 run, and some serious collectors doubtlessly hold some copies as well.

@@frogscotch19 The only Alice illustrations I really like besides Tenniel's are Lewis Carroll's from his handwritten manuscript, Arthur Rackham's, and Helen Oxenbury's.
