Hi James! 看到這條影片覺得很感動。在台灣很多人自動放棄了母語,很多臺灣小朋友現在只會說一種語言也不會想要學習自己父母或祖父母的語言。I happened to be someone who lives in Taiwan that speaks Cantonese and I only speak Cantonese to my girls so they are the very few kids who speak fluent Cantonese here in Taiwan. We’d be happy to practice Cantonese with you if you like. Just give me a message if you’re interested. My daughters would be happy to talk to you too. They love talking to people who can speak Cantonese. By the way they speak Mandarin too because they live in Taiwan.

I had watched a few of your videos a few months ago, getting to know your background, your hearing disability, your making up a bucket list and getting determined to pursue them, etc. I just saw an incredibly goal oriented person. Unfortunately, around age 13 is about the age where it starts to become hard to "acquire languages". That being said, she seems to have a foundation already which should help a lot! The main thing you should try and do, is give her a reason to speak and continue practising. Maybe there's some TV shows she might enjoy, people she could be friend's with, or even visiting Hong Kong to show how speaking in the environment gives a huge advantage. Ultimately, if she's not interested, it's not going to stick. Thank you for letting me know I helped a little though :)

My dad tried to teach us Hakka as well when we were young, but none of us wanted to learn, so he stopped trying. When I became much older, I asked him to teach me and he just said that he was too old to teach me. I wanted to teach myself, but there are so many different Hakka dialects and I didn't know which dialect he spoke :(

You did amazing! And the puppy rubs definitely continued on! At one point your puppy got up and your hand shot immediately to give him rubs like you wanted to keep him there lol. It was very cute. I breathed a sigh of relief with you at the end knowing how hard it is to hold a conversation in a language you are not super confident in and because I could see you put a lot of pressure on yourself to do well. Though it was good to see you relaxed a lot more towards the end of the conversation. Your Cantonese was actually pretty spot on most of the time and I’m sure if you keep up the practice, you’ll be onto a fluent conversation in no time! I actually felt like maybe your dad had trouble hearing you at times due to the connection or muffling from the mics rather than because you said something wrong. Like in the beginning when you asked if he was eating with your brother and you said “sai lo” before switching to just asking with who. I could definitely understand you, so I think it was just not as clear over the call itself.
