i don't agree with the statement "8 hours in a chair shows dedications to the job". its kind of slavery and its can lead to many occupational health hazards. Healthy worker is a efficient worker. Thanks to the COVID finally Sri Lanka has evolved from traditional office based work to work from home. i believe this shift played a major role on changing the mentality of IT industry workers. Just a constructive criticism from my end. I'm really proud of you and your accomplishments bossa
@Bhanoob Жыл бұрын
I don’t agree with the 8 hour comment either. The way I see it is that there’s infrastructure being built for people that don’t have it. This has little value for those in Colombo but it could potentially be a game changer for those that otherwise would never get the chance to touch a computer. Even if the core skills are less relevant, it has the ability to spark curiosity among enough people to dig deeper into things that they’re passionate about. To me, that’s worth pursuing.

Sitting 6+ hours a day is the new killer. It caused all of the health related non communicable diseases and also I personally think 4 days a week is more productive than 5 days a week. Sitting doesn't mean you actually work. May be you are just there for the sake of being there.
@ranilabayasekara8914 Жыл бұрын
Agree. The point might be missed, but for health reasons one should not take 'sitting for 8 hours' literally. The main thing is to turn in a full day's work

I am a Canadian who grew up in Canada but originally from Sri Lanka. What India did right is that they are offering degrees, diplomas and certifications geared toward either global certification standards such as CompTIA A+, CCNP, etc and the markets in the West. The Sri Lankan community kept hold of the line of "elite universities" and divided the Sri Lankan students and did not fix the issue. All developing countries and even developed countries have divisions within educational institutions. But what is sad is that the quality of education, access to correct materials, access to facilities and globally recognized programs are vastly different from Colombo University to let's say Rajarata University. India also has this problem. This is why they have Tier 1, 2 and 3 universities with Tier 1 being well-funded. However, most of these Indian universities and colleges still offer programs specifically targeted to the current global markets. Sri Lankans MUST unite and close the gap between let's say SLITT, UCSC and other rural and smaller schools. Also teach English to everyone! This is the way to fix the issues in Sri Lanka. Don't build IT infrastructure and facilities just in Colombo or Kandy. Why not Plonarruwa? Why not Thanamalwila? You need to distribute wealth and resources to everyone in the country or you risk being a failure as an entire nation. There is a reason why so many, even poor Indian kids, are in Canada (and other Western nations) working in IT while I do not see that tread with Sri Lanka. There are benefits to this for the locals as well. Some people who came to Canada from India have went back and built IT companies in India helping Indian population back home. This is what we need in Sri Lanka as well. Also, I disagree with Japanese mentality or American culture of working to death. No you do not need to dedicate your life to your work to improve productivity. Look at Western Europe and some, not all, companies in Canada. We don't work to death. We have paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid family day offs, etc. I get paid to even take my mom to the doctor. That is called work-life balance. Don't copy America (the USA) or Japan. Please copy Western Europe like Italy, Germany and France for work culture models. Workers rights and human rights matters! Thank you for an outstanding discussion.

Very articulately put: There is a real divide between urban Sri Lanka and Rural Sri Lanka in pretty much every sector imaginable. Tech, Health and Financial Education are probably the most notorious. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm also going to guess there's a divide in Polital Education too.
@NetITGeeks Жыл бұрын
@@ahmedhaaqilrifky3531 Looking at how Canada dealt with the same rural verses city divide, I think Canadian model is an OK model. It is not perfect but better than what US and others did. What Canada did was to open government owned facilities or tax-subsidized facilities in rural areas like Northern, Central and Western Canada. For example, Winnipeg Tax Centre (Canada's largest tax processing office) was built decades ago because Winnipeg had no economic progress. It was rural and Canada needed to do something to help people in that region. The Canadian Engineering and Scientific research bases in Northern Canada are other such examples of this as well. Even first first countries have wealth distribution is a problem even in first world countries. But it is worse in developing/poor countries. It is unfortunate. 😭

Great discussion to move the nation forward to success. Dhammika’s passion is clear. 1. English education is of utmost importance for total, national and global success for equality. 2. Co.s could uplift the company standards alone by giving this training in English. Also, promotions could be within the Co. 3. Work life balance is of importance w/o slaving. 4. Transparency should be anyone’s principal. 5. Not to follow global unethical trends. Having been in the garment trade had passionately worked long hours and also one trade that rewards well, but worked hard regardless. Same applied to hospitality!

Some people have the wrong perception about Western companies. Transparency is not a thing in Canada and the US. I am not sure about other countries. For example, my jobs here I had no idea if it take 2 week or a year (that's right one entire year) to get an LOO (letter of offer) or rejection depending on the company. Some recruitment processes are very very complex in Canada and the US. Transparency in hiring process is so bad in North America, there is an entire sub-Reddit dedicated to it. I am not sure about Europe. However, I do agree it is a good thing to have for your company.

Everything is great except for the "training people to physically sit for 8 hours" part. I understand it's figure of speech and the discipline to put in the hours is important but speaking as someone who's already in the industry, this is not how actual work happens. Software engineers aren't factory line workers for clock in at 8:30 and just pump out code for 8 hours straight and punch out at 5:30. That's not how it works.

I felt most of the new bees in Developed countries lacking the endurance the most compared to their older generations. We have genetically that capacity and I think that's what our DP has pointed out. If we can mold a kid in that way, his or her consistency will be higher. However, the most important thing is to have right knowledge before everything else. However, I feel both has good vision and hope for the best for the country. Ranil is already too old to protect and back the Rajapaksha crime circle in the comming years , but Dammika is not . He has strings attached to Rajapaksha family even before 2012 when Gotabaya shot two school children to protect Dammika's factory in Wathupitiwala. Then the covid came in 2019 and Basil gave him " Tile import ban " so Dammika could increase the tile price by 300%. Then Basil let the economy to fall yet gave this man a billions of Tax relief. That stolen money from the public is going to play in the 2024 election. The same black money were re invested as DP education IT centers ... just to build the public image according to Basil's 2024 election plan to get back the power through this guy. That's why Basil removed his Katagoda from the parliament seat to take this guy in during the 2022 Aragalaya. Rajapaksha criminal circle is wide and huge .... ☺

Problem with older generation (older CEO, VP, managers and many companies run by older generation) they are still resistant to “Change”. It shows with this statement of sitting in a chair for 8 hours which proves nothing but slavery. Man can sit in chair for 8 hours but if motivation not there it won’t prove productivity. World needs “changes”, not incorporate old ways of thinking and claim “new changes”.

I think Bhanuka has a next level mind. I think he is more like a startup concept. He may be where entrepreneurs are instead of jobs

Disagree with 8 hour sitting on chair. When considering some gov institution somany officers sitting on chair more than 12 hours. But efficiency is less. someone may be 6 to 7 hours work with more efficiency. Based on that slavery imagination still in their mind some businessmans. Perhaps its south asian country thing ir culture differences
