When I was a kid, that whole stretch of the south side of the river between Tower and London Bridges was still abandoned warehouses. I remember my dad taking me to see HMS Belfast in around 1975, and you could still park for free in the cobbled streets between the warehouses, and walk to HMS Belfast in less than a minute! London has changed a LOT in not that many years!
@TravelWithBen121Ай бұрын
@@andybaker2456 it’s a fascinating area, Andy! From what I read online, it started to be used again and developed into housing in the 80’s so 1975 would have still been abandoned. @TravelWithBen121 To think that when I was a kid, the tallest building in London was the Post Office Tower (as it was then known). When I come to London with a tour I usually stay in a name brand hotel ..but when I come on my own I stay in rooms very similar to this one today. All I care about is clean and a private bathroom...I don't understand people who pay so much for a room that you basically just sleep in. The hotels I like are near Paddington station which is so convenient to get around the city. I also stayed in a very small room near Tottenham Court road one time which was also very convenient. I would never do a hostel (too old for that) but these little boutique hotels are just fine.

@@TravelWithBen121 My friend's disability allows for 2 or 3 hour spurts at a time so we would go out in the morning, do something, then go back for lunch for a few hours, then go out again and she'd go back after a few hours and I'd do my own thing for the rest of the evening. So I wouldn't want her to stay in that room for most of the day. Everyone takes the city at the same pace and if you can't get around very well, there's only so many hours you can sit in a pub or park. For the first couple of days, the hop on hop off was great because we could take laps for her to see things and the few things we got off at, we didn't have to tube or anything. I’ve enjoyed all of your London videos. I like seeing things most tourists never even imagine exist in a well known city, I agree with you completely. When I travel I prefer to stay in inexpensive lodging so I can spend my money doing things I want to do. All I need is a clean room in a safe area with a comfortable bed and a private bathroom. The only exception would be if I am going to a specific resort area to enjoy the amenities there.
@TravelWithBen121Ай бұрын
@@daniellilienkamp5202 you’re totally right, Daniel! It really depends what you want out of your London trip. It’s important to stay in a location you want to be in but I don’t think a luxury hotel room is necessary. Nice? Yes. But essentially? No.

Hi Ben, I've seen several of your London videos now but while you were passing Tower bridge you said why the one streetlight wasn't a streetlight but a chimney. Thank you so much for that because I walk there and was wondering why there was no light on it ;) And like you say you can do London on a budget. If the weather is good just buy some fod in a supermarket a picknick in a park. Greetings from Holland.

I stayed in London 26 years ago with my daughter at a posh downtown hotel. I don’t remember the exact price anymore, but definitely much more than £45. It was a double room, so add another single bed plus 6 inches between beds for size of the room. I would definitely stay there!

11:32 the Uber Boats have a tourist trap: at the piers there are tickets machines, which you will see first, but you can also use you oyster card/credit card. There is a possibilty to tap before entering the boat and its cheaper than the tickets from the ticket machine.

In 1986, I stayed at the Strand Palace hotel for 60 pounds including a buffet breakfast. Small but comfortable room. I stayed one night in Edinburgh for 25 pounds but only had a sink, no bath or toilet which were down the hall in separate rooms. To see similar prices with a meal and private bath in this day and age, pretty nice.
