Thanks! I really, really enjoyed this - I bought a book called Still Life at the National Museum of Australia gift shop last week because I loved the artist stories-now I'm going to go back & think about trying to copy some of the pieces.

Thanks! I recently sketch copied a painting by Manet and learned a lot just from doing that. And I have that book of Sargent watercolors and was already thinking I should do a watercolor copy of something from that book... so thanks for the encouragement! Robert in North Carolina, USA

That’s great, yeah it’s really helpful especially when you’re in a bit of an art rut!

Stealing... People tend to forget that there are/were billions of people creating artworks on Earth throughout of thousands of years. There's literally nothing new/original under the sun. When you create an artwork and you think it comes from your own imagination, you are using all the images your brain has ever seen and you interpret those into your artwork. The problem usually comes from people creating a very close "interpretation" of someone else's artwork and they either declare it their own or just simply forget to mention "INSPIRED BY + CREDIT". So, yes, imo there's nothing wrong with copying. As you said, copying is important and very useful. And one can even freely post a copied artwork on social media too. Giving CREDIT is the important part, making it clear that the artwork was inspired by another artist's work.

Oh this is awesome!! I love how you have learnt so much just from studying Sargents work, esp the colours purple, yellow and orange. thank you for sharing. I am definitely going to be ‘studying’ the paintings more the next time I am in the Art Gallery.....oh and getting a few books on my favourites.

I wish I had started doing it sooner, I’ve learned so much already! (Plus it gives me an excuse for my art book buying addiction haha)
