The vehicles are so thrashed that parts in a wrecking yard aren’t of any value.. engines that are full of metal shavings, gummed up because they have never had the oil changed, etc.. this is why wrecking yards don’t want the liability and stuff whole Korean cars straight into the crusher. @@abrahamperez8565 MOST consumers have terrible locks even on their homes (which both cost more and house family, which is arguably more important). I was picking house locks since diapers... Now with $20 you can buy a bumpgun and pretty much anyone is getting into your house in just a few seconds. If you watch LPL (Lock Picking Lawyer), he goes over showing several bump keys that open all Ford models, all Volkswagen group models, etc. Also thanks to Lichi tools you can not only pick but decode (to properly make a key to come back later) and get almost any car with ease. I've also CAD designed my own key based on a photo and traced it then 3d printed it. I don't think you understand how all locks are literally child's play (there is one safe I was never able to crack, but even as a child my grandfather for Christmas bought me a mechanics stethoscope so I could hear tumblers). I wasn't that much into lock picking, but it came super useful when my dad would forget the keys to a lock and driving a tractor back a few miles would take an hour, and picking was faster. I still to this day cannot open a combination lock if I know the numbers, but I can do it behind my back in a few seconds (those are super easy to pick, but its just another example of the illusion of security)

As a former car thief I have to say, though, that this ignition system's design is way too easy to exploit. Normally & WAAAY back in the day I needed a minimum of 3 tools PLUS drill bits to break into a car's ignition system, & that's just the break-in. Once I'm in & depending on the make & model I could have to spend as much as 4-5 minutes starting the car. These Kia Boys are exploiting a ridiculously hackable ignition system that was built this way to save the manufacturer money. P.S. take it from a former player in this game that almost nothing beats The Club, particularly The Club system that goes over the accelerator pedal! Back in the day if I saw either of those things, I walked. They are defeatable, yes, but not by a street car thief. You need frikkin' Jaws Of Life to pry one of those. I never heard of anyone who could successfully pry a Club off of a completely circular steering wheel without cutting the wheel, which takes a lot of time.
@CenPapi Жыл бұрын
Funnily enough i just got a letter from KIA corporate last week saying that due to a class action suit they are offering free steering wheel clubs to all KIA owners because of this. And instead of taking the blame for sub-par design they blamed it on: "risky social media "challenges" that encourage young people to break-in and steal certain Kia vehicles."
@dennislilley5562 Жыл бұрын
They don't work They can be taken off in less than 30 seconds. All you do is hacksaw the steering wheel right next to the club lock pull the club off But they already know alarm with a immobilizer to the fuel pump At the end of the day it's the insurance companies that pay then they pass the cost onto the consumer
@JamarD421 Жыл бұрын
I think the blame should go both ways. If people weren't stealing because of what they saw on socially media, this wouldn't be happening (as much) as well as if Hyundai Kia put in mobilizers this also wouldn't be happening. However they 100% should be taking the blame regardless.
@CenPapi Жыл бұрын
@@JamarD421 Yeah, of course both parties are to blame. I just thought it was amusing that after a shortcoming in their design was discovered and exploited; instead of offering to remedy their short-sighted design choice with an immobilizer, they instead just offered a bandaid solution that can also be easily bypassed with a pair of bolt-cutters.

Except people are going to go to the internet and are going to start complaining, other people start learning about this stuff and then boom, Kia gets a really bad reputation, which in the long run will hurt sales and also like the guy before me said, it will make insurance companies to increase their rates on Kia cars just to be safe, which will also hurt sales because people would not pay outrageous prices for a cheap car. @@dkrampage2933 I don't disagree, and I'm sure Kia Motors of America sees it that way as well. Doubt Korea sees it like that though. And they ultimately call the shots. The only reason I don't totally agree with you is that recalls aren't some arbritrary thing that manufacturers do. NHTSA tells the OEM that they are out of compliance with emissions, safety, or other regulation. If it is "Volutary", that means the OEM went to NHTSA and said "Hey, we aren't compliant and we are recalling" and NHTSA said "Yeah, you are right, proceed". Because of this, if they were to do something free of charge, it would be some sort of voluntary campaign that they initiate, manage, and report on, themselves. Yes, I know, i'm being picky with words. But in my line of work for another OEM, the "R" word is taken very seriously.

Crazy... I’m an appraiser for an insurance company and we literally just had a meeting two days ago letting us know to expect a sharp rise in claims involving stolen Kia’s/Hyundai’s. We were not aware about the “Kia Boys” challenge though. *Edit* There are so many appraisers per insurance company and so many different insurance companies out there that not one single insurance company is taking the entire brunt of this trend so yeah. When you consider how many claims get submitted per day for a ton of different types of reasons, it takes a lot for things like this to start making a dent. However that doesn’t mean we’re just now seeing these claims. Oh we’ve been seeing them. We just didn’t know why these vehicles were suddenly being targeted besides the fact that they’re easy to steal. I had to pay $175 for the tow.. wait 3 days for a rental due to being the busiest time of year for rentals in Vermont due to foliage.. finally got it today h went to see my car.. it’s wrecked basically.. all scratched and coming apart in places.. they broke my sunglasses just because.. stole my 5 years old metal baseball bat.. the one thing he cared about when he learned mommy’s car was stolen.. I’m a struggling mom and this crippled me even more.. months before Xmas.. I’m so defeated.. no matter how hard I work, how hard I try.. how good of a person I am.. I have the worst luck.. car thefts don’t happen where I live.. they do now all the sudden cuz the moron kids can’t seem to use their brains or think for themselves.. they follow trends because that’s all the know how to do is follow. Hope the tide pod challenge comes back quick.

bypassing the ignition on most cars since the early days has always been possible, in the UK we called it Black Capping as the back of the ignition was mostly a black disc container with an indent in centre you could just use a screwdriver on, and stirring locks are way too easy to break it's just a bit of steel housed in a cast metal case which breaks easily, All door locks aren't safe either, a good 8 inch screwdriver flat head can always force the whole barrel around in the door as when they tighten then it just ain't enough to stop entry, so no need to break the windows with any ceramic like spark plug broken bits or flat head screwdriver in the corner of the glass, and as for the alarm systems just short the electrics and it blows it, if you take the car in the night you can just roll it away down the road silently and then do what you need to do in the distance to it, the only real way to protect your car from being stolen in any of these ways is a 2nd or 3rd cut off switch stashed in the car, and don't tell anyone about them at all and be really sneaky at it.

It makes sense that they wouldn't skimp on security in a market where car jacking is so common --- at least, from what I've heard. Or course, you'd think they'd do the same for Chicago. 🤷🏻 Maybe South Africa has stronger laws in place than the US.
@plonkster2 жыл бұрын
@@jpaugh64 When cars are (hi)jacked over here, they do it while you are in the car. In other words, they take the keys. In some ways, the higher number of hijackings is caused by the security inherent in the vehicle. Because it is difficult to steal them, it becomes easier to hijack them. Thankfully KIA and Hyundai cars are not really popular for hijacking, at least less popular. The most popular hijack targets are still the popular Toyotas, the VW Polo, and increasingly the Ford Ranger. Also, 3-series BMW and larger Audi's are popular options for later use in cash in transit robberies. I think the reason we have the better lock is simply because South Africa has always had a preference for the Euro spec cars, and many of our models are imported from Korea (some models are built in Benoni, in the Gauteng province). That means we get the Korean-built cars, rather than the US-built ones. It probably makes more financial sense that way. This lock issue is very much an American issue 🙂 To give an example of where the reverse happens. The Suzuki Swift, sold in South Africa, is built in India by Maruti. The same car, sold in Europe, is built in Hungary. Same car, but it means the Europeans get a slightly better put-together option.

My buddy's wife's suv got broken into. They never got the car started but they trashed the steering column and ignition cylinder anyway. It sucks and they were without their car for over a week while the dealership and the insurance company got it working again. All that said, that video of Gurty flying over a hill was fucking gold.

@@underadesk bro my american sold and made car has daytime lights. And there are alot of American cars in canada. I live on the border, and i ve even crossed to buy vehicles to bring back. Canada and usa have a deal, you can drive with either registration and license in either country. And you say civilized eh? if Canada is so great why is 90% of your population crammed on the border with the Usa
@aaaabababa2 жыл бұрын
@@ScootsMcPoot you can drive with either registration and license in either country, but that doesn't mean you can register an US Spec car in canada if its missing features that a car that is registered in canada needs to have, importing a car from the US into canada that doesn't meet canadian specifications isn't possible without making it meet the specifications, for instance current year cars have to have an electronic immobiliser and a metric speedometer, if the car that was imported doesn't have those it has to be modified to have them, and if it can't be modified to have them then it can't be registered in canada.

@Edu_RJR2 жыл бұрын
here in Brazil it's pretty common for people to install separate security features in their car, often called "secrets", like a button that you have to press after you turn the car on, otherwise it cuts the fuel pump power, they're usually cheap and easy to install and prevent thieves from driving much further than a couple meters
@LifeAsAPotato2 жыл бұрын
theyre called kill switches!
@relayfree12732 жыл бұрын
I have something similar but it's controlled with an electric key that I have to press on a hidden contact then you have 15 seconds to turn on with the main key. If you don't do it and go directly for ignition the engine cranks but doesn't turn on at all. I think it works by closing a valve before or after the fuel pump because when operated it makes a high bzzzzz noise from under the car near the fuel tank area. I too would like to know better how it works since previous owner installed the fact is that you can hear the noise only when it's operated but it doesn't make any "closing" noise as you would expect when the car is turned off or if you let the 15 seconds expire in that case you have to press it again to hear again the unlocking sound...
@mobileterminaluzer18582 жыл бұрын
Those are called kill switches. Those can be installed by anyone. Battery, fuel pump, ignition, relays. Adding a series of kill switches & wired in a specific sequence or combinations to allow & stop current to battery, fuel pump, fuel relay, multi fuse, starter, alternator makes it harder to even look at.

R&D engineer here and this is really simple: the designers aren’t car people. Worked at a supplier for a while and not many R&D engineers there were into the product we were supplying too (can’t give too much info but let’s just say what we made propelled the vehicle in question).
@CrocodileWhispers2 жыл бұрын
Yo I’d like to agree with you that “the designers aren’t car people” but Hyundai and Kia bought up a ton of bmw engineers and designers to design their cars over the last decade. So they had a ton of quality talent that absolutely 100% should have known better. They designed the cheapest car they could for every markets laws. A Canadian 2019 sonata can’t be stolen like a US one (immobilizers are mandated there) so they absolutely knew what they were doing

You guys should do a story on how 12v shops actually go about doing things to PROPERLY add aftermarket security to a vehicle. And even over and above the factory security, and on top of transponder chipped vehicles. A reputible 12v specialty shop that does audio remote starts security etc is an excellent place to learn about these things and how it's done when done right

More like a lack of morals in modern society. People are now looking to take things because of ease or not caring about the effects it has on others, or the consequences they may face if caught. Carjackings in general are up in many places by a large margin. If they cant do a hack on a vehicle, they are doing it by gunpoint too.

I haven’t left my apartment complex in 23 days. I’m disabled & can walk. I can’t afford a rental. I’ve canceled doctors appointments, including a pt appointment for my teenager. I can’t get to the laundromat, I’m paying delivery fees I don’t need for groceries. My ear drum is ruptured & I can’t get to a doctor. My hearing aid broke. A simple fix if I could get to the office. Thanksgiving was ruined. I can’t explain the physical, psychological, emotional, financial & mental toll of being imprisoned like this. The police don’t care. The girls, on video, are 12 & 14. They left hair, prints, a fake nail & a usb cord. They ripped apart my steering column & shatter my window. I have insurance but it’s a $500 deductible. I had to start a gofundme. I can’t live like this much longer. It’s destroyed my life. And, it’s a joke to many. If you think it’s funny I hope this never happens to you but I hope you reach a level of maturity & empathy to understand the consequences of this for people who did nothing wrong.

Hi, just stopping by to say thanks for laughing at my (bland) plight. My Sportage was stolen twice between June 26th and August 25th. I'd purchased it less than two years ago; it was the first new car I have ever purchased, and will likely be the last, since I am now in debt from multiple insurance deductibles and property loss. Thanks again! Cheers.
