I often hear "table top" thrown out like it's a "low quality" paintjob. I don't agree. Table top is like being a scratch golfer. It really is a quality level of proficiency. No, it isn't Golden Demon. But there's a reason Golden Demon exists. It is a MUCH higher standard. It's as if completing a triathlon or marathon is failing because you don't place top 3. Table top quality really means you do a good job. It demonstrates that you are an active, proficient hobbyist. Great review, Wyloch- Thanks!

Honestly, you and OP don't suffer from not wanting to get better. You just probably were taught or showed incorrectly how to learn to paint. I've taught a few hundred people how to paint as a former GW staff member and painter. I have met many people over the years who have given up or basically said "I can't paint well, but I paint to a quality I like". There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it always hurts my heart bc I know the joy of really getting deep into the painting side and all the satisfaction of searching for new techniques. I think where the majority of people go wrong is that they are taught by someone who has winged it or just puts washes over everything. There's honestly only 4-5 basic things to learn that can take you 90% of the way to a high caliber paint job, such as thinning paints, learning how to separate/segregate sections on a model, some basic color theory, and finally just basic light theory. This all sounds complicated but only takes about 1 week to start seeing improvement. If that's all you learned and kept at it, within 6 months the worst painter in the world would be putting out good models. Again, whatever floats your boat and makes you happy. Just don't be so quick to "stop improving". Instead, take a step back, and start over with a model. Pretend you've never even seen painting and watch a few basic videos. You'll be surprised how much of bad painting is not technique, but habit. I've had students that I've shown the basics too and they come back with sand glued to the faces to "show that the figure is battle hardened". There's nothing you can do for that except hope they have the gusto to one day ask "am I following the guides?". Just realize that somewhere before you get to "pushing" yourself and hating painting, there's a great zone of "painting for the enjoyment" of it that still involves trying new things, just not burning yourself out.

I think the best approach is to enter a new wargame with speedpainting, so that you can finish your warband, kill team or whatever quickly to finally play and get into the hobby/game. Later when you have some roster diversity you can take more time with your next miniatures and learn some more advanced techniquies

As someone new to the hobby, speedpaints have been a life saver for someone like me who is mostly interested in playing the game. I don't want my minis to be a grey tide, but I also am not willing to dedicate the massive amounts of time that a tyranid army would require with normal standard paints. Speed paints have come to my rescue - able to quickly slather on the base colours on top of an aerosol spray primer layer. My models look just fine with only two quick paint jobs. If I feel that a model deserves some more love, I can take the time to fill in some details with another colour - but getting them tabletop ready is quick and easy and doesn't compromise on quality by a significant measure. Only close inspection will reveal my personal lack of skill, but we're not comparing paintjobs, we're going to war!

I'd like to share my favorite speedpaint trick; Base coat in normal silver metallic, and then put a coat of speedpaint over it for instant metallic of any color. Because the speedpaint is translucent, the metallic effect shines through wonderfully. It also seems to reduce the "glittery" aspect of the micah powder without losing the luster. Personally, I think the metallic speedpaints in the 2.0 line are too watery and glittery, especially compared to the results you can get from this trick.

People really over stress painting your miniatures to insane levels. The truth is you can paint the most insanely detailed figure ever.... but from 3-5 feet away on the gaming table you will barely be able to tell the difference between a 30 minute speed paint job and a 6 hour ultra detailed model. Your mummies especially look great, better than most minis I have seen at a gaming table.

"Overwhelm the eye with sheer numbers and it looks past the quality issues" ABSOLUTELY TRUE. I know a lot of begineers burn themselves out trying to get their armies done by making sure every single one is neat, highlighted, shaded, all to perfection. When really, your opponent is just going to see a mass of fully-coloured dudes regardless of how well painted each of them are. Nobody is going to look at your 100 orc army and pick out the paint job of an individual guy, they're going to go "holy shit 100 painted orcs!"

The problem with craft paints is consistency: Some cover well, some cover like crap, some are thin, some are thick, and then the next batch of the very same paint will be different. Consistency is one of the things you pay for with actual hobby paints. Yeah, some craft paints are consistent enough you can rely on them for painting minis, but as a general guideline you're just making your life a whole lot worse and experiencing a self-inflicted pain in the ass.

I started with Speedpainting early last year as my first real run at mini painting and it's been great. I certainly don't do the ultra quick paint jobs you are talking about, but I'm pretty happy with I speed through in 30 minutes when I'm good with less quality and nothing that isn't huge goes over a couple hours. The nice thing is that you can put in more time on top of these (particularly with 2.0) when you want to do more detail work.

I swear by the four foot rule, if it looks okay from four feet away, then it’s good enough for the table. One thing I learned with my first time with speedpaints is be careful what you prime them in, speedpaints are very transparent and will darken or be light based on the primer, I’ve got some very dark ogres now. And also be careful with the amounts your using at once, not too much not too little, as I find it can actually pool and spread downward if you use too much. That being said, start from the top and work down.

i thought i was the only one that had that thought when doing my first mini painting video. it really is tricky to setup recording equipment and make a mini painting video enjoyable and watchable. but so is painting minis for the first time so i can appreciate both as challenges.

I'm really new to painting miniatures I started when i took early retirement last year. I'm not a gamer i just really like painting miniatures. My painting wasn't great but my wife bought me the original speedpaint set and you are right what a difference they make I've had some fantastic results!

I think contrast paints are great for basecoating and going back to traditional painting for layering/highlighting. I still suck at painting too

Good video. Absolutely amazed at how quick you can get a model done to that level with hese paints. They really are a game changer. Also, those mechs looked great in the end!

Thanks for this video! I get intimidated by the pressure to always be improving, and that's led to me leaving some minis grey. It's nice to be reminded just how good a tabletop-ready mini actually looks with very little effort!

I prefer the Vallejo Xpress Colors for this kind of painting, but I see that these also have the issue where you have to be careful with bubbles on the model otherwise when they dry you'll have white spots on the model.

Hm, haven't seen that happen on mine, with SPv1. I often end up with bubbles, but those usually pop as part of the drying process and even out just fine. If I have a white spot somewhere, it's usually because I literally missed painting it. :D

The return on investment for results vs time spent is unquestionable. Great results throughout sir.

Those look good! I'm on you with this; I paint for my models looking better on the table, not to win competitions! Whatever helps, I'll take. Also, painting is a hobby... shouldn't be torture! Thank you for keeping it real!

Try silver on a gold area, then use the yellow speed paint on the silver. Boom Gold!

You can fix a mess up on a zenithal job but it’s tricky. I keep the base primer color handy and will mix it will my contrast/speed paint and test it on primed plastic until the tone matches the area I want to fix. Then I go and stipple it in gently over a few coats. It’s not always perfect but it’s totally doable with patience

It’s amazing the paint selections today when I started you had Testers and if you were lucky and had a few bucks you could get flesh or other special colors.
