@@bradyk1604 See, I can see your point of view, and it's not invalid. Certainly for the majority of the campaign, I could see myself enforcing a similar mindset, the dice tell the story. However, if you have a moment of epic like this scene here, I'd personally be willing to allow them a fudged roll. Not as a mainstream thing, but as an exception, due to the fact they've done something UNSPEAKABLY EPIC (the guy suplexed a fucking DRAGON, after all) they get one pass. This time.
@aquamarinerose5405 Жыл бұрын
One thing I'll recommend on the more RAW side (And the question of cheating death in particular, since I see there's a back and forth argument between letting dice tell the story or not) I'd be highly tempted to recommend lifting a system like Pathfinder's Hero Points (really, hero points from EITHER edition, Though the Second Edition version might make more sense in the case of a simplified system like 5e.) Which, a basic summary of hero points because I'm a nerd like that. - In PF1e they're a semi-permanent resource. You start the game with 1 hero point and you can get more by having the DM award them to you. You can spend them to do a whole bunch of things ranging from acting out of turn, using an extra action, getting hints from the DM, reroll, do essentially a miniature divine intervention (the Special category which says you can petition the DM to spend a hero point to do "anything that would normally be almost impossible, such as casting a spell that's too 1 level too high for you, making an attack that blinds a foe or bypasses its DR entirely, or using diplomacy to convince a raging dragon to stop its attack". Or, most relevantly to THIS conversation, spending 2 hero points to cheat death. - In PF2e they're treated much more like Inspiration, you get 1 hero point at the start of each session, and get more by doing daring or heroic deeds. you can spend 1 hero point to reroll any check, or spend ALL your hero points (minimum 1) to cheat death.

With falling rules and being a monk. Monks have that catfall skill where they take half damage from falling, and their falling damage length also starts after 20'. They were riding another person so they take half damage due to that as well. Which drops the damage to 1/4th. The bard could have cast feather fall while the crash landing happened as well. You can only fall 150' in one round unless you are thousands of feet up and can hit terminal velocity which takes you falling for 300' uninterupted. This gives time for other characters to prepare something to help out. Feather fall would drop the damage even farther (1/8th). Making it laughably easy to survive. Yes the rules are all there and exist, most just aren't willing to do the math is all.

If he was grappled and put into a chokehold. Or worse, pinned and put into a number of submission moves. A Boxer's greatest strength is to maintain distance and a little box between them and their opponent. While a Wrestler (or Wastler if you are thinking more entertainment) is all about moving in and going for the grab. Never giving their opponent a chance. To basically overpower them. And should point out. MMA is vastly different from either and a whole different fighting style.

But instead she flew into the air and carried me 400ft abover the ground. Dropped me, but I proceeded to swing a chain and catch it on the spikes on her back. Then made a series of checks to climb up and dodge the breath attack as she tried to shake and bake me off. Chain was made of adamantine (from the dragons horde) so wouldnt break. Once I was riding I wrapped around the dragons wings and got that magic nat 20 for doing stupid stuff. Cried “for the ancestors!” And proceeded to survive at -6hp, already dropped the dragon off a cliff with a falling rock trap, shot her with a cannon, and dropped heavy opbects on her. The fall was just enough to finish the angry lizard. Almost didnt make the death saving throws, but managed to cling to life with every bone in my body being broken. Went on to do a “dragon hunter” campain after that short test game. Made a of stuff out of the dragon.

Reminds me of the time my barbarian back in the good old days of AD&D (Second generation) body slammed a Silver Dragon as part of a dare only for the groups paladin to totally loss it and beat him up with his shield :P

Can only say how it'd be even cooler had he not survived that final fight, dying in the process of taking down the dragon but leaving behind one amazing legend for everyone to speak about!

Props to the party and Los Tiburon for pulling an epic win against a formidable foe.

A dragon we were fighting was going to do a breath attack as a dying action. I had bigby's hand still up( i was using it to bitch slap the dragon) dm allowed us a reaction. I told him I close shut the dragon's mouth with the hand. We rolled and I passed. Dm described the dragon opening up about to spew flames and shit only for me to shut him up and cause his head to explode. It was metal af.

Old but good story. I remember it well, and certainly enjoyed hearing it again. There should be a tavern IRL where there are just regular performances of old D&D stories for oldtimers.

I had someone try to do something similar in one of my games. Everyone thinks they're prepared to DM until they hear the words "I'd like to grapple the beholder"

As a Wrestling Fan...mans hits him with a Spear EDGE **"Metalingus" by Alter Bridge (WWE Rated R Mix) starts playing** would be proud of, does a Surfboard Abdominal Stretch on the Dragons WINGS holding him back completely and then makes this Dragon walk the Razor's Edge **Razor Ramon theme plays** to snap its Neck on Impact. What a goddamn Legend.

I mean he also did kinda SNAP that DRAGON's neck with a SUPLEX.

@@camiblack1 Nah my friend, the way he threw him down was a Crucifix Powerbomb made Famous by Razor Ramon, hence the name it was originally known as at the time "The Razor's Edge", the Dragon merely botched his landing snapping its Neck
