Halyna and Bakira endured sexual violence at the hands of soldiers. Halyna - in 2022 during the occupation of the Kyiv region by Russian forces, and Bakira - in her hometown of Višegrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war in the 1990s. Both thought they would never speak about what happened, but they decided to break their silence to change attitudes toward survivors and ensure that war criminals do not go unpunished.
They, along with other women who have survived violence, share their stories with the authors of the film "I Survived." Human rights advocates explain why rape is used as a weapon of war, how to bring military criminals to justice, and what happens to children born as a result of such crimes.
