I feel like a lot of people are missing the point of the video... It's not to bash someone who has purchased any of these items, it's to open the conversation of making intentional purchases in the age of digital marketing where you are being sold things everywhere you look. Especially in the bookish space, we all like cute things, we all want to be a part of something, but if something doesn't make sense for you and/or your lifestyle, you probably don't need it!

commented on insta post, but thought i'd leave this personal tip here for people struggling with spending/using it as self-medication: whenever i feel like spending money on online shopping, i go to whatever platform i currently want to shop at, put literally all the items i like in the cart, review after I'm done, leave them there & return a few days/a week later & review what's in the cart again, removing what I no longer want, leave it again for a month & if i STILL want any items after a month, then i can buy them, knowing i'll actually need and use them & it's not about ownership/immediate dopamine. depending on the price tag of the item & how bank-breaking it is, the time periods can be extended to a few months etc

Something I find really helpful when I feel a need to get new stuff is to go to the library. You can check out a bunch of books, get the dopamine hit, and return them in a few weeks after the feeling has worn off. You spend no money, you don't clutter up your house, AND you help the library because the more books that get checked out the more funding they get (at least for the public libraries where I live). Win-win.

May I please mention using your local library whenever possible!! It solves a lot a lot a lot of the issues invented to make you want to buy a product! Amazon products? Your local library will give you access to Overdrive, Borrowbox, Libby, etc to use instead of Audible, and those three are all apps you can use on your phone - you don't really NEED to buy an ereader. Book sleeves? Library books usually come in plastic sleeves anyways, nicely protected! Buying more books and not reading them? Borrow from the library! If you borrow books from the library and don't read them, it's guilt-free because you haven't spent any money, you're supporting your local library and the author, and you won't ever reach a point of book clutter or book-buying regret because you can easily return them and someone else can read them. TBR cart? The entire library can be your TBR cart if you want it to be, you don't need an actual cart in your home taking up space.

I love my library but good gods they don't have even half the books I'm interested in and when requesting they be added I get "these are too niche/published more than 2 years ago and cant be added to our collection" 🥲 (I'm not in the US, but NL)
@wings91772 күн бұрын
@@ThePathOfAshes yeah, unfortunately that's super common. It's why I said use your local library whenever possible, because I have the exact same problem, being into mostly sci-fi lol. Do keep making those requests though! Even if they can't get that particular book in and you have to buy it elsewhere, requesting books is still an awesome way to support your local library, and they might reconsider those books when they're next bulk buying stock! I'm a librarian myself and we LOVE requests. We wish so badly we could fulfill every single one, but the more requests we get from patrons then the more proof we have that such-and-such book is in demand and that stock should order it in even if it's niche/too old.

You bring up a lot of good points and I mostly agree, however I do disagree on two of them: Book sleeve: I'm not precious about my covers; I crack spines etc., but I work in a very dusty and muddy, sometimes wet, job, and I don't want my books getting ruined in that way. I think for the small price of a book sleeve, they're a really nice and harmless item, especially if they are handmade. E-reader accessories: I have a case for the same reason as above, but I also use a popsocket on it. I don't use a popsocket on my phone or anything else, but my Kindle is an awkward size and it is nice to have support for my fingers to keep it balanced. Also I am autistic and love fidgeting with it, which keeps me focused. I love stickers, I maximalise everything and make it my own. I think personality is a really nice thing to see visually. I would be inclined to agree if people are spending extortionate amounts on their stickers, and I'm sure some do, but I think on the most part this is also harmless and adds no weight to the reader at all.

Book sleeves are probably the one thing I don’t agree. At the risk to sound like a hipster, I’ve used one before those got popular. My books always get scratched with random stuff in my bag, the corners get damaged with me taking my books everywhere; and more than once I have got my books damp when rain leaked on my bag or a pen explodes or something similar. It also applies to e-readers, my screen has gotten scratched without protection. They have been a game changer because even if I own my books, I’d like to keep them in good condition for years to come. Then again, I know how to sew and I’ve sewn mine, and the ones I’ve used in the past were tiny, book sized totes I’ve gotten as gifts with purchase of clothes or other stuff (yay for reusing things).

I’ve never bought a book sleeve but have you really never had a book get beat up inside your backpack? There’s other objects in there and it moves around a lot. If you have a laptop charger and a spiral bound notebook in there, those things will beat the crap out of a book. Also schools used to require covers for textbooks that you’d be borrowing from the school and returning at the end of the year.

I use book sleeves because I have a lot of random stuff in my backpack and it keeps the book safe. Especially important if it's a library book or I borrowed the book from someone. Oh, the book sleeves thing i can see being an excusable purchase under specific conditions. Like, buy one that's good for multiple sizes NOT buy 24 for every color and size. But like a) some of us are messy as fuck. Books get ruined around me. Sometimes it's my fault (pudding) sometimes it's just a dog with a chewing fixation 🤷♀️ b) bag accidents happen. Thermos leaks, coffee spills, bag spills contents into street. The extra protection for your book might be worth it. c) the book your reading is special. Special/limited edition, special to YOU, borrowed from the library or a friend. Maybe it's a student book and you want to sell it at the end of the year. d) you're a book archivist, and you like to keep your books in their best condition. Having a THICK or FULLY covered additional case for your book isn't the WORST thing in the world if you can afford that luxury. But it is a luxury, and you could probably look online and find some DIY alternatives that would also keep your book safe. That's just my opinion tho. I'm glad you're here and deinfluencing us. Doing globs work 💕

E-ink screens are fairly delicate and scratch/break much more easily than a glass screen. I'd rather spend the extra on a cover that can get beat up than have to be extra precious with my expensive electronic when I'm traveling. Book pouches make sense to me in the same way... I've had many a paperback have their pages or cover get damaged from being tossed in a bag. Though they do seem like they'd be fairly simple to DIY with scrap material

I don't have one of those page holders, but arthrosis runs in my family, so when I hold a big book for a long time, my thumb sometimes starts to cramp up and my wrist feels sore. So I imagine this gadget is supposed to help with that. What I don't understand about people's annotating habits is if you tab (nearly) every single page, you might as well tab none of them. How are you ever gonna find anything again? I also annotate my books and only ever felt the need to tab that extensively for one book (a fantasy novel with an unreliable narrator that required me to keep track of all the contradicting new info coming in at every single page). Usually, if I tab 20-30 passages, it means I enjoyed the book a lot. Totally agree about not needing a new e-reader. I had my Kindle Keyboard since 2011 and only replaced it this year after the battery reached its end. (And I probably would have just replaced the battery if it wasn't for the integrated light in the newer models, which is a game changer for bedtime reading.)

I've never actually heard of a book sleeve before but now I really feel I need one. Somehow my books always get dirty in my bag from the most random things. I've had a book and a computer mouse in my bag and somehow the mouse made black streaks on the edge of the pages. I've had a book in my bag and threw a pen in and it drew on one of the pages. Sometimes pages get folded. Sometimes a have a cool drink in my bag and it does that thing where it's wet on the outside. I've chosen to not bring a book before because my bag is so full and I was scared of damaging it. I think it's funny how you absolutely can't wrap your head around why someone would need it, and my brain just immediately jumped to all the times my books would have benefitted from some protection in the mess that is my bag haha 😆

Books sleeves - I bought one once but it didn't work out because it was the wrong size for larger books. However, I sew and would to make one or more to protect hardback books. It seems a fun little project. I feel okay just chucking a paperback book in my bag, but avoid transporting hardback books in a bag and would like to do so. I chuck all sorts of things into my bags and don't want the hardback books to get banged up. Book marks - I like the ones with ribbons/tassles which I use over and over. Often, I have more than one book going at a time. In book stores, I usually turn down the book marks unless it's something super interesting. Page holders - I use a book stand/holder for a variety of reasons. When I've had issues with my shoulders/arms, it has been necessary for accessibility reasons, but it's still helpful even now when I don't have issues (usually). It can hold my book/ipad when I'm eating. I use it to display pretty books etc.

Funny enough the one thing you don't get is the only one I do get 😂 a bookbag or sleeve helps protect the cover and pages when taking it out of your bag or when carried alongside other things like notebooks, pens or pen pouches, lunchboxes, etc. I remember vividly how the corners of my books or notebooks would get banged up by just carry them around regularly or dirt would sometimes get stuck between the pages or a stray pencil or even a broken pen could leave marks onto your book cover/pages etc. It just keeps it neat and type and a bit more protected (same reason you would put card sleeves onto your card game decks, or travel cards to they don't damage as easily with frequent use). That said, you def only need one or maybe two in different sizes if you have a lot of varying size books, they're easy to make yourself and def don't need a ton of them to match your books that i see some folk do 🙈 I do use a popsocket on my ereader cuz it makes it a little less awkward to hold one handed in bed, but yeah lol I could do without, it's just more comfortable.

I cannot agree more with these excessive spending habits I am seeing around me and every time I see these, I keep questioning how it impacts the environment. I also journal a lot, which means I use a lot of stickers and tapes; and I have been wondering how production of these aesthetics stationary items impact the environment. I think you don’t have to stop using all of these stuff at once, but can limit them to whatever you need instead of hoarding them. same goes for the sticky tabs and annotation supplies, as I personally love using colour coordinated stationary when I am reading a book, but if I don’t have something, I use the next best thing that I already have in my house. It not only fuels creativity but limits consumption. I think in case of the book covers, it’s a little bit cultural in Asian book reading communities. I have seen really creative and beautiful book covers in Japan as well as in South India, where I have visited. I grew up with my mother always putting a cover by using old newspapers so that I don’t spill food or ink on the book. In many cultures here, books are equivalent to God, and hence we cover them as a sign of respect. and hence it’s still a part of my reading habit to cover up the books I like or I am reading, to make sure that the book illustrations stay longer. Every time, I come from bookshop, my mother will ask if she can wrap my books before we keep it in the bookshelf. So I am not completely against book covers, but the production can be limited. Also, you have to understand that most traditional practises do not directly harm the environment or promote consumerism. My parents wrap the book with old newspapers or wrapping papers, which is technically a good thing. but buying a new cloth or plastic book, cover every time or even every year is not good, in terms of production waste.

Watching this while crocheting a sleeve for my kindle and needing a new pop socket, not clear case for stickers though

and the truth many need to hear is that black pen or pencil annotations look A MILLION times better anyway! Also on book bags, I do like them cos my tote bags are rank but they can be made at home sooo easily, I asked my friend to make me one and it took her like 10 mins on her sewing machine

What I do to avoid buying every book I’m interested in is I take pictures of the covers. And recently I compiled all the books have taken pictures of into a spreadsheet. This way when I am ready to buy a physical or ebook I can look back at the spreadsheet and find what book I have already been interested in. I know this is not revolutionary but I think I could help decrease the feeling that you need to buy the book in case you forget about it or can’t find it again.

I definitely think people get very caught up in what the CAN buy and don’t think about if they SHOULD buy it! I’ve definitely been tempted by some of these, the TBR cart and the Kindle specifically. The funny thing is I don’t even like Kindle or read KU books, I have a Nook reader that works perfectly fine! The only reason I want a Kindle is it’s smaller so more hand-held and I like the look of the stickers on the back and that’s NOT a good enough reason to get a Kindle when I have a perfectly good Nook with Libby! The page holder thing I’m iffy about. I have one and will say it actually does help your hand not cramp as much when reading hardback books holding it with one hand. But I feel like the design leaves a lot to be desired and I also generally don’t read a lot of hardback books. It certainly isn’t an ultimate game-changer for everyone like people say it is.

interesting with the hard cover vs paperback! Im a hard cover lover and didnt even think about the comparison between the two (I know I am in the minority here)

Came here to say i love ur glasses!! Someone commented this already but book sleeves help so much ( imo) because it keeps my book protected in my bag. I commute via public transportation so it helps so it doesnt jingle jangle around with my wallet and a random poptart my kids decided to leave in there 🤣🤣

I also find that holding books with one hand is unwieldy and I often drop them- another reason for me not to have a page holder

I didn't even know page holders exist, but for a sec, you had me going : I Need This! 😆I have to get infusions regularly and, while sitting there for an hour or more, I can't use one hand - BUT I don't have to read print books at all during that time, I have so many books on my phone, which I can easily hold in one hand. No need to buy a gadget if there's a easier solution right at hand.

I have one of those carts but I use it as a side table for my bed, the top is where I have an alarm clock, light and my drink then the middle is where I have my diary and writing pad... then the last shelf at the bottom my throw over and some small pillows. Never used it as a TBR cart

Just as a person who only likes reading paperbacks, i have been in my reading again journey and 6 of my books have been folded and one book got the back cover page seperated into 2 because of putting it bare in my purse. My purse is big and i like having lots of things on it. I'm sick of my books getting damaged. That said, I am planning to get ONE book sleeve bag. ONE. Like you said, it's ok to consume, but consume thoughtfully.

The only thing I can think of for the page holder, outside of accessibility, is when reading mass market paperbacks. Those suckers are TIGHT! So maybe it's supposed to help you read them without breaking the spine?

The “de-influencing books themselves” made me laugh and shout “yes!” because while scrolling on KZbin last night, I came across a video of a girl who bought 50+ books and spent $500! And that’s not even the worst one; I then came across another one where a girl was going book shopping with no budget and she spent $2000…💀 I don’t even know how many books she bought because I didn’t watch the video but come on…that’s insanity.

I was def influenced to by annotation stuff and really have not gotten into the habit of using it :(. I also bought one of those carts, but I didn’t get it for a tbr, I have a small amount of space for books, and being able to roll/move it out of the way easily helps as a little bookshelf.

I bought a tbr cart but i didn't have enough books let alone unread ones so i used it to hold desk related stuff like stationary, extra paper, etc and then i realized i could accommodate that in my desk drawers so i ended up giving it to my mom and she has it almost empty w the most random things in it. Truly the most useless purchase in my household

So for the booksleeve, number one I’m kinda a mess, so my bags can be dirty (horrible confession for myself) plus my purse has sharp zipper teeth like she is trying to devour my books edges, and I noticed they were getting ruined. So I got one medium size sleeve for softcover books. Just one. Lols.

I saw some adorable, gorgeous, jaw dropping book sleeves but they were soo expensive. So I thought I'll buy them when I have money, and then I thought about it and decided to not buy them. Bc 1, I'll get bored of the design and want to buy another one, don't need two. And 2, i can crochet it?! I really needed one bc I bring my books to school and sometimes they'll get torn at the edges, so I opened the easiest tutorial and crocheted my first book sleeve and crochet project! Now everyone compliments the sleeve whenever they see it and I have my books safe, without even spending money. Highly recommend

"I don't need it, therefore it's scam" I get that this video is for people who feel pressured to buy what's in trend, but at the end of the day, it's for people who like spoiling themselves and getting extra dopamine from their hobby. It's also just a preference. I have no doubt that your audience will feel reassured though, but I don't like how "you don't need this" attitude is also judging the people who do enjoy it.

I would get a book sleeve for my kobo tbh to protect the screen. The pop socket was a great purchase I use it so so much, I am not getting a second 😂

I annotated with just a blue pen for years and folded down the corners of the pages. Even though I use tabs and a black gel pen now, you definitely don't need much to start annotating!

Okay personally I am looking at a book sleeve because I take HORRENDOUS care of my books. I am protecting the books from myself, because they get abused in my bags and it's a problem lmaoo

I really enjoyed this video and we could chat for hours about this 😅 my opinion is alot of this is a result of people keeping up with the bookish trends and aesthetics in our community, unforunately. People can spend their money and enjoy this reading hobby however way they want to, but I agree alot of these items aren't needed (except the book sleeve, lol. My beat up paperbacks give me side eye anytime I take them out of the house). Also, I too have a kobo!! Love it. Everyone has a kindle but I don't see people talking about kobo very often.

I want to buy a TBR cart instead of a bookshelf for books that I wanna keep. Usually, I read a book and then sell it.
@NazaQuintana11 сағат бұрын
Nope, your book will not be okay by just putting it in your bag. I destroyed 3 books by putting them in my daily bag and I felt devastated. So I decided to buy a book cover and it was AMAZING! Best decision ever, no more beaten books!

The only reason I have a cart is store crafting things with quite a bit of things on it cannot imagine using it for anything else (other than cleaning supplies if you live in a flat or something) I love my kindle have had it for years don’t want a new one (I would like a new case for it at some point as it is looking bad)

I feel like I need to be de-influenced from buying a Kobo, but I want out of the Amazon system so badly. I have a Kindle paperwhite that is a few years old and works perfectly. I know I do not need to upgrade/change to something else, but damn I wish I could go back in time to my initial purchase and learn about the alternatives out there.

Man I reeeeaaaaally wanted to like one of those page holder things, but it didn't work for me with anything but small paperbacks. Turns out holding a large book with your thumb bearing a lot of weight was not a comfortable experience for me. Also I'm right there with you on the reading backlog stuff. I have a ton of books on a list that I'm going to read, but I don't buy anything unless I decide that's my next one.

The colorsoft is only good IF you actively read color graphic novels (for manga get a normal e reader its not in color anyway) and there are other ereaders. Like kobo has one cheaper than the color soft (and one has buttons like the oasis)

I'm a kindle ereader lover since I first knew of them in 2008 but I've been looking for alternatives when this 10th generation dies. I'm un South America and I wrote Kobo ereader on the navigation bar to discover that a) the ones imported to my country are about 600 USD and b) Amazon sells Kobo. Well, shoot me on the foot.
