I am actually impressed by the level of detail in the carvings. The faces, for example, are very detailed. If one considers how small these things are on the dial, and then considering the mechanical wizardry required to then make them able to move under that crystal, without interference with the minute and hour hands, it is amazing .

Thanks for a fascinating exposure to something I'd only ever heard about. I was going to refer to the unique complication, but my autocorrect kept changing it to copulation. Two comments: 1. You focus on context, but we cannot assess the present piece without knowing whether it is a production piece or a bespoke piece, and if the latter who commissioned it. Your script suggests that this should be appreciated in the same context as baroque pornographic / erotic watches, but this is clearly a modern piece. I am not surprised that UN isn't volunteering information, but you must know the provenance of the piece, and I think you should separate this piece of modern porn from the historical pieces. 2. Years ago, a crude friend of my father's had a crude wristwatch. I promise you, he did not enjoy it privately: he showed it to everyone as an expression of his sense of humour. This present piece is, to my eye, a piece designed for conspicuous consumption (otherwise why sign the rehaut?), and I expect its former owner and those who have watches like this are eager to share them as an expression of wealth, of eagerness to transgress customary mores, and as a way to expose people to pornography as an exercise of power. Oh, one more thing: The idea that it is possible to make a living sculpting pornographic watch dials in this day and age is heart-warming. I don't like porn, but I love the idea that a highly-skilled artisan can be employed in their craft.
