if the motor housing is damaged and the bearings are not functioning correctly , i would suggest that it is best not to continue flying the drone until you replace the damaged motor , what is going on right now is that the ESC is having to push more amps into the motor for it to spin as it used to do in its undamaged state , the more the motor spins in its damaged state , the more the damage propagates - the more amps the ESC pushes to the motor to keep the drone in the air , this eventually leads to the ESC burning itself out which is far more expensive to repair/replace than replacing a faulty motor .
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
@@notsogood4321 the motor housing or bearing wasn’t damaged - what happened was that the bell which is normally either on a press for or grub screw retainer, was pressed down a bit making the bell rub against the plastic from the frame. Removing a bit of plastic did the trick to free this. I get what you’re saying but with these tiny motors and escs, any slightest amount of friction wouldn’t have allowed them to spin. Also it wouldn’t have been quite as good a watch if I said „it works but I had to send it back to dji to have half the drone replaced again 😂😜“

I did not read all comments so someone may have said this already. But this is not autorotation. In this case propellers change rotation direction. I would call this windmill.....In autorotation rotation direction remains and it does not need negative pitch. There is positive pitch both in helicopter autorotation (only some helicopters can have negative pitch, all can handle autorotation) and in autogiro autorotation.
@dronewilder523424 күн бұрын
@@zedato7835 it’s been covered a few times in the comments. Autorotation simply means a propellor is made to turn without an engine using airflow alone. Even a maple seed falling from a tree is said to autorotate when it spins due to its shape
@zedato783524 күн бұрын
@@dronewilder5234 I would not say it is simple as that. In "windmill"- mode the propeller rotates without engine. But it is not "autorotation" as meant in helicopter or autogiro autorotation. Check autogiros rotor turn direction and pitch. Well, maybe airplane engineer is needed to explain to us. I am not.
@dronewilder523424 күн бұрын
@@zedato7835 I think it’s just more a matter of how the terminology is defined. Technically when someone mentions autorotation I also naturally think of a helicopter reversing prop pitch to spin the props using airflow, gather kinetic energy and drag but the term autorotation generally refers to a wide variety of cases. But it’s all splitting hairs really 😂😜
@audioadventurer6892Ай бұрын
Autorotation is when the air speed generated by a falling aircraft is enough to spin the rotors and generate some lift, slowing the fall of the aircraft relative to if the rotors were locked in place. Rotors generate lift by rotating. The wind generated by falling rotates them. Whether or not the aircraft remains stable is a question of it's centre of gravity.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
@@audioadventurer6892 that’s a better explanation than mine for how autorotation works 👍. I guess even based on that concept the slowing of the aircraft allows the drone to settle into a level attitude within 100m even if it’s purely down to CoG

I never would have thought that this little thing would even work after your first crash from 100 meters on grass. After the crash on concrete and this sound it made I really was speechless. It’s a very low inertia drone which falls under the C0 250g class but as a few others have commented almost warrants a sub 150g class of drones as at this weight and inertia the risk of damage/injury is extremely low. Obviously there will always be exceptional cases and no drone is risk free but it’s all relative and if relaxed regulations where to steer more people to fly lighter/safer drones in general, this is a huge advantage.
@zedato783524 күн бұрын
I had even more weird behaviour with my big drone. Due to electrical problem I had full black out in flight. This happened three times. The drone started to drop immediately but it did flip upside down and stabilized without power. Very similar video as yours exept upside down! I think that due to propellers big mass they did not stop and reverse immediately but continued to rotete to initial director so long that the drone had time to flip. Then propellers did not "need" to reverse anymore but continue to rotate in "windmill mode". What does cause stabilization is unclear but I think that for some reason "lowest" propeller has highest drag. And about my crashes; drone had minimal damage because it did fall slowly.
@dronewilder523424 күн бұрын

Not exactly autorotation, in an autorotation the pilot reverses the propeller pitch so that the rotor gathers speed as the helicopter falls then he put the blades in the opposite direction to slow down the descend as he pulls the cyclic to flare.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
Strictly speaking that's correct yes. If we compare to an Autogyro plane though, this uses the same airflow induced rotation (also referred to as autorotation here) to generate lift without reversing pitch as used in a helicopter emergency landing. I also tried it in FPV recently. Its definitely a great tiny whoop but obviously not suitable for freestyle purposes. As a cinewhoop the Avata 2 is also not intended to be a freestyle drone but specifically with the Neo ist very easy to just fall from the sky, while doing flips or yaw spins. Basically any very extreme movements while at full throttle. As I said - not a freestyle drone and you can clearly feel that even compared to an Avata 2, which is also not even nearly a freestyle drone either. So this is not that unrealistic of a scenario - at least if you are like less than 10m above the ground, it can just fall out of the sky AND hit the ground. If you are higher you should still be able to catch it back.

The biggest problem is being able to arrest autorotation (counter direction to normal) once it's picked up too much speed on descent. I've tested this by sticking the drone out of my car - up to 20kmh it works but anything faster and the motors won't start.
@midnightman873Ай бұрын
3:10 It did not do an autorotation. You need a variable pitch rotor to be able to reverse the pitch to build up momentum in the rotor which is later used to produce thrust once the pitch is brought back to normal for landing. The drone has fixed propellers, if the motors were trully killed it would fall like a rock. The only means for controll is via the 4 motors, the propellers are solid plastic they do not have variable pitch control or any other control surfaces. The only way the drone is controlled is by controlling the RPM of each motor. Even if they managed to cram a variable pitch system in the propeller it likely still would not work as the propellers do not have enough mass to have any usefull momentum. What is actually happening is the motors are trying the keep the drone upright/level in the position it was before the fall. The motors are still on and spinning, activly stabilizing the drone they just aren't producing enough thrust to hover, the small ammount of thrust produced from stabilizing is what makes it fall slower, not autorotation. It's a rapid controlled decent, not a free fall.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
The definition of autorotation is when a propeller rotates without an engine using just airflow. It doesn’t require variable pitch in this case as the prop direction reverses during the freefall. Even a falling Maple Seed is said to use autorotation due to its asymmetric nature.
@midnightman873Ай бұрын
@dronewilder5234 Sure, the air can windmill the props, but that would not make it glide down. It would be the same as dropping it completely powered off since the only active controll are the motors. If they were completely stopped, it would be no different than dropping it completely powered off. The motors are still providing some power. You can hear them spin up and down as the drone is responding by staying level. Great video still, quite entertaining :)

As Arnie says… I’ll be back! Actually interesting to see the way the drone settles into an attitude to allow the props to auto rotate. Very cool test. Have you tried taking it to 100m, then tilting it forward and cutting the motors, so it’s not already in a hover attitude? Is there sufficient time for the weight of the battery to flatten out its attitude and then the auto rotate to soften the landing?
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
In my previous ultimate crash test video I throw the drone off an 80m cliff and it’s initially a very unsettled attitude- yet still settles into a level autorotating attitude near the end. It’s done this in every freefall test I’ve put it through (about 3 in total)
@scoptimizationsАй бұрын
I did that from 90m as well. Just with a normal 5" with gopro. because battery and gopro is much heavier, it tilted downwards, preventing me from arming it back on again. Everything survived without issues. Was a nightmare to watch and was a "good" search too as I didnt know where it landed!

A quadcopter cannot do an auto rotation for a few reasons - not enough momentum stored in the tiny props, the props cant change their pitch to a negative pitch. What probably happened is the drone just made sure its stabilized and tried to reduce the impact results by "landing" on a specified orientation, but to know for sure DJI has to give some input on this.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
@@Noney8078 autorotation is simply the process of a prop (including fixed pitch) using airflow to rotate and generate drag. It’s a generalised term which is also often used to describe the manoeuvre you’re referring to which helicopters use in emergencies such as engine flame outs. Once a dji drone motor has been stopped it does not restart regardless of the drones speed - you can test this by arming and disarming the Neo inside a moving car 🙂🙂
@Noney8078Ай бұрын
@@dronewilder5234 Well, this is not autorotation... Its creating drag to slow down the fall. Autorotation is a completely different maneuver. You may call it autorotation but its not...

Virtually every online source will tell you the following statement- quote:”Autorotation is a condition of helicopter flight during which the main rotor of a helicopter is driven only by aerodynamic forces with no power from the engine”
@Noney8078Ай бұрын
@@dronewilder5234 Exactly "helicopter flight" not a controlled fall but a flight driven by aerodynamic forces. A controlled fall is not flight.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree here (respectfully). I see autorotation as the process of a prop being driven by airflow with no engine power and most sources agree with that definition. Bottom line is, it stops the drone from uncontrollably falling in a random attitude and provides a reduced terminal velocity of 45kmh. But we really don’t need to keep arguing this because I’m suspecting you won’t budge from your opinion and that’s absolutely fine 🙂
@PJZombieАй бұрын
That is not how auto-rotation works. It requires changing the pitch/angle of the blades to create lift temporary lift, what you have here is just blade rotation keeping the drone upright. Also, just because the battery hull is cracked doesn't mean that the lipo itself is damaged. Likewise, just because after a fall, the battery hull looks ok doesn't mean it is not damaged.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
Autorotation is rotation of a propellor using airflow to build kinetic energy. Even fixed pitch auto gyro planes are said to utilise autorotation. What you are referring to is a technique used by helicopter pilots which indeed uses a flare at the end of an autorotation to covert the kinetic energy back into thrust and it is generally called an autorotation, but the term autorotation isn’t limited to just this use 🙂. Regarding the battery, between me and you I agree but I’d get massive flack on a video if I advocate using cracked damaged batteries 😂😂.
@PJZombieАй бұрын
@dronewilder5234 agreed. But that's just the point, the hard protective casing is damaged but not necessarily the actual lipo itself. We unfortunately have to cater for the people who would say "hey but he said it would be OK to fly it" and sue for damages. Most rc devices have had a hard knock or ten, and just because the case isn't damaged, doesn't mean the lipo is safe, yet they still fly it. Not all rc flying devices have a protective case, I have over 25 rc planes and 4 Drones and the ONLY one that has a hard protective case is the DJI. Common sense and inspections for damage and assessment of your lipo's before flying is how you decide if you shouldn't fly it.
@dronewilder5234Ай бұрын
@@PJZombie exactly. As you say lost RC batteries just have a bit of shrink wrap to protect them. It’s simply become more of a consumer market than a hobbyist one these days.
