With a Nikon Z mount, you can use Sony E mount lenses with autofocus on an adapter. I think the faster Nikon moves away from the RF mount, the better, Canon RF lenses are crap. I am a Nikon stills shooter and right now I have to carry two sets of lenses, a RF version with the equivalent Z version. Hopefully Cooke will come out with a Z mount now because I have been acquiring the new Cooke SP3 lenses but I can always ditch the RF mount for the Sony E mount when a new RED camera comes out with a Z mount.

I think using your E mount you will be able to use an additional adapter for the Z mount, so there should be no issues there at all. This also opens up the possibility of Sony users to try out a Nikon cine camera with Z mount since we would be able to use our Sony E lenses ... smart move Nikon. I just hope they let RED be RED and let them keep doing their R&D and push the envelope as they have been doing.

This. Sony + Nikon lenses on Red sensors. The Z mount is the future of Red.

@@livejames9374what's impossible? There are Sony E to nikon Z adapters with auto focus. They've been around for years. Nikon has a 55mm diameter and a 16mm flange. That's just enough for adapting the smaller e mount at 18mm flange.

Nikon Mirrorless cameras already have internal raw with z8/Z9, N-raw 8k/60. RF mount will stay but they’ll probably have a Z mount option which is a good thing, better lenses imo.

It would be amazing if they offered an option to send our brain to get the mount swapped from RF to Z .. I can see a lot of people doing that. Opens up so many possibilities. Canon ain't happy.

That would be awesome! I would take advantage of that if that was ever an option! I’ve got a lot of Sony glass that I can’t use on my Komodo.

I'm curious to know which camera company between canon ,Sony and Nikon in the hybrid space is in last place because when you look at the Z 9 and Z 8 those are some pretty serious hybrid cameras, and that was before purchasing Red so the only big difference in these top 3 camera brands is Nikon had no cine line at all. not anymore. :) I just hope people keep an open mind and wait and see before jumping the gun about how its all going to pan out . thanks for your video.

Thanks! Yeah great thoughts. From the sales figures I’ve seen Nikon has slid back to third place behind canon and Sony. Acquiring red might help them move up. We’ll see!

I wouldn't worry too much about that as it isn't really relevant. Nikon is a smaller company than Canon or Sony and do generally sell less cameras, but that doesn't mean the equipment they sell is in any way inferior and doesn't affect the quality of the images or videos the cameras produce.

I think future RED cameras will be Z mount. There is no incentive for keeping a competitor mount, sadly, but from a business perspective doesn't make sense. Now they can perhaps open a new line of Nikon cine-glass. And of course as you mentioned Nikon mirrorless line using the RED sensors (global shutter) and the RAW coded .. imagine that .. give it year and a half and I think that is what we will have. Sony and Canon better start working on internal RAW.

Having the option for both mounts makes the most sense to me (assuming canon will continue to license it for a similar price). Red used to offer multiple mount options. And I doubt canon or Sony can do internal raw. Red has a patent.

As a Nikon fanboy this is great news But as you said If was a Red user and they started putting Z mount on their new models Id be abit upset, as all of my Canon glass would be obsolete.

You definitely should get rid of the RF mount for future cameras. Offer a adapter if it possible.

RF mount is dead. Nikon out right own RED. Nikon gets to decide what they are gonna do with RED. For the billionth times Sony only fabricates Nikon designs. RED does not even design their sensors. Nikon makes the machines (steppers) that are used boy Sony to manufacture sensors. Nikon design sensors always had better dynamic range than Sony design sensors. RED out source it sensor design & manufacturing to an undisclosed third party (Sony for their latest sensors).

I don't think Nikon will give you everything that is a full-fledged Red cinema camera. They will hold back because they now have a cinema line to protect, and why would you buy a Red if you can just get a regular Nikon body. I agree that I believe this gives Nikon a path to make its own sensors. I also don't think RF Mount won't go away because it will frustrate current owners, plus it will make a ton of money from royalties money from Sony Canon, Fuji, and others, just like Redvdid before. NIKON just became a huge player in the cinema space, and it is now a three-way race to the top.

Great thoughts!! I’d love to see an fx3 type camera from Nikon. I definitely don’t expect a full fledged cinema cam in a Nikon body though.

Very true. But the Z mount can be adapted to more lenses like e mount. It’s a tad more flexible than Rf in that way.

🤑🤑🤑Once Jim Jennard departed RED I had a feeling and it became true, that RED was slowly losing money, momentum and they were heading slowly to extinction so the new owner and CEO sold it before he lost even more money. I was one of the first RED ONE original camera owners and RED treated me like crap after I paid them their $40K all at once for the Red One with all accessories. I was one of the first 500 buyers that should have received the RED One but RED played favorites and shipped over 5,000 Red Ones before they shipped mine so I lost valuable time to rent it so I can recuperate the $40K I paid them. I'm still trying to get rid of it and will never trust this company or Panasonic ever again. Panasonic's problem is that they introduce a camera and 3 years later they stop any technical support on it, so AVOID Panasonic at all costs.

Sorry you had a bad experience. That was 15+ years ago. From my experience as a current owner operator of over a year and being a red user for about 9 years and from talking to many other red owners the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

@@RileyEndicott I gave them my lifetime savings and instead of being one of the first people to get a RED One they gave priority to rental houses and delivered mine 1.5 years later. I'm now unemployed can't find work. If I had the RED One when they were supposed to deliver it to me, I would have made that $40K back from renting it and I'd be in a different place now. RED also offered me to upgrade to a RED with Helium sensor for $11K by turning over the Red One body since I was one of the first 500 buyers and a "believer" in RED and they screwed me AGAIN!!! They did the upgrade in 3 stages and I was placed on stage 3. I kept calling them every 2 weeks and they kept telling me they are on stage 2 and suddenly one day they told me that stage 3 ended 6 months ago. Total lie, since I was calling them twice a month. Screw RED!!!🤬🤬🤬

DJI bought Hasselblad. And it’s doing great from a business standpoint and by also offering “affordable” medium format cameras. Their recent release is actually in the top 10 best selling cameras in Yodobashi Japan. Very surprising
