I am the same way. If I have the cash, then that's already been deducted from my bank account. But if I use my card, that's money that was sitting safely in my account until I used the card, so it feels like a more immediate hit to my money than cash does.

I've been trying this out lately after having a period of problematic spending, and it definitely works for me! Having cash just makes me wayyy more aware of how much money I actually have to spend and how often I mindlessly swipe/charge my card for unnecessary purchases. It also forces me to think about making online purchases because I actually have to go to the atm and deposit money to buy something that isn't necessary lol. Of course there are some drawbacks but it truly works to control spending

I like the idea, but the $20 on groceries is unrealistic, at least for my preferences. I know some people can eat pasta and marinara sauce everyday. But if you want to have a more balanced diet, you need your protein, your veggies and your fruit. I would rather spend a little more on a “home dinner date” with my hubby then on entertainment. But hey, that’s the beauty of it, I totally get that many need to go out and have a different activity to disconnect. Not judging anyone. For the record, we live in Florida and as a couple we spend around $80 per week on groceries (that would be $40 each)

Where I live, anything less than $50 won’t even keep you alive. And that’s bare minimum, eating a lot of cheap pasta and bread. To eat at least slightly balanced, you’re looking at $100 for a single person, and an additional $50 pp after that. I’m poor, and I spend $200/week on groceries for three people. Maybe if I didn’t have a kid to raise, or I wasn’t disabled and nutrition makes a huge difference to my quality of life, I’d try to spend less and eat a lot more plain pasta, rice and bread. As it is we still eat a bit too much of it, because they’re so cheap, they’re the easiest things to plan a meal around. Like, X night is a rice night, what are we eating with the rice? What are we eating with the pasta? Whereas I remember as a kid, my parents would plan meals based on what meat they had access to that was cheap. Man, meat is so expensive these days! And there’s no such thing as a cheap cut of meat anymore. Even the slow cook only stuff, which used to be the cheapest, is ridiculously expensive. Take Chuck steak, which used to be a very cheap cut. It’s now $20/kg. I can’t buy beef mince that isn’t half fat or water for less than $25/kg. And for a steak? Can’t get anything half decent for less than $40/kg. And for that price, I want a chef to come to my house and cook it perfectly for me too! And fresh produce isn’t much better. A single capsicum (bell pepper, I think they’re called in the US) is $5. A single avocado is $6. Iceberg lettuce, which used to be the cheap way to pad out a salad, is now $4 each. It’s ridiculous. And it makes it so, so hard to be able to buy healthy food for myself and for my kid. When the fresh stuff is so expensive, we have to pad everything out with the cheap, carb heavy stuff like pasta and rice. No wonder we’ve all gained weight. I’d kill to eat a diet that’s mostly fresh food. I’m someone who hates convenience meals (with a passion, seriously. They’d be cheaper, especially given I need to pay someone to cook for me out of my disability care budget, but I just can’t eat frozen meals. They’re so awful!). And I don’t like greasy takeout (fresh sushi is what I’d be spending my take out money on if I had it). It’s just that the grains and carbs are more than half of my diet, because I can’t afford to eat any better. It just sucks.

@@katherinemorelle7115 Britain? Curious. Obviously in America things are a lot cheaper. $6 for a whole chicken on a pricey day. 1 kg/2.2 lbs of fresh deli sliced turkey or packaged skinless boneless chicken breast is $14 where I am. I think bell peppers are $1 each. Spaghetti is of course like $2 for 20 servings. Maybe $5 for a box of rice which is many servings. Oh and I bet beef is REALLY cheap in Dallas where this video is. By comparison. Cheese is cheap here. So definitely where you are matters. Vegetables are a bit more. Probably $3 for a bag of frozen vegetables? Google says $2 to order online the really cheap stuff. Food is really cheap in America usually. I remember trying to find rice and beans at the start of covid (beans being the cheap protein) and it was pretty hard. I spend about $100 a week for one person during covid when I was rarely ordering in though so I am not one to talk. At least of I don't want to gain 20 lbs. I would actually enjoy spaghetti or buttered noodles every night, but my doctor would kill me. I mean if I wanted to spend $500 to see one.

I've been doing this for a while. It really keeps you within your budget. But you got to stick to it. It takes a while to get it perfected. What sucks the most is buying gas. Also, don't keep all your cash on you all the time. If you are going to work, you don't need your grocery money on you unless you plan to go after work.

I think it's important to keep cash alive, for the privacy. It's also a method of payment that doesn't depend on a working internet connection or engagement with a bank. Redundancy is good. However, using it as a way to control spending seems very limited.

If you knew the level of detail the banks have on EVERYTHING you buy. The banks know more about you than your mom knows about you. Example you buy milk at the grocery store: the bank knows gallon size, 2%, store brand, organic. Hell the police might as well pushed your cart up and down the store aisle while you picked out your items for purchase. After a year they now have a profile on you.

2 thoughts 1. Pay all of your bills (whichever way works for you) and only use cash for the extras. This is how I can save money. Am I willing to let go of 10-20 bucks at Starbucks, do I have enough cash to buy that decor item at a store, etc. I rethink needs over wants. 2. Debit and credit are 2 different things for sure! It is easier to swipe a card, but debit cards still keep a better handle on things! I budget so much for groceries each week. If I go over one week, then I need to be cut back the next. My checking account balance keeps me in line!

While I appreciate that cash helps limit spending, many financial services do not lend themselves to paying cash. For example, I am paid via direct deposit, and all my bills are auto-pulled from my account. I don't even know how I would pay my mortgage or bills in cash. Cards also protect you from theft. If your cash is stolen, it's gone. If you card is skimmed or stolen, you can get that money back. I think you should carry at least $20 just for emergencies. Cash really is only convenient for groceries, eating out, and in person shopping. Still, i wouldn't want to be carrying around $100s of cash. This is my biggest criticism of the Dave Ramsey cash method. It's just not practical.
@christinam81
@christinam81 2 жыл бұрын
Hopefully, you shouldn't need to carry that much money around. I have a safe in my home, close to $2000 in cash, but I'm not carrying that around with me. That would be silly. I take out what I need, which is always under $100 and I'm not walking around with it all day. I'm terrible with swiping my card, but a lot of youtuber's who have cash envelope channels (who use cash most of the time) know this about themselves and pull money out in cash for things like rent, insurance, etc. Why? Because they know if they leave it in the bank, they may spend it on the wrong thing. When it's time for bills to be due, they deposit it in time for the money to be withdrawn from the payee. It's about being disciplined and they recognize that they're not lol - and that they'll have to do the most to keep from spending outside their budget. I admit, it's a lot of work, but they never bust their budget. And also, Dave Ramsey recommends using cash and your debit card, not just cash 😊👍

I think the idea of this challenge is not to pay things like rent,mortgage, utilities, or insurance in cash. The idea is to rein in your variable impulse spending. For example. If you budget $20 for groceries and only have $20 on you, you can only purchase $20 in groceries. But if you have your debit card, you can go over your budget. You can't do that paying the electric bill.

My roommate and I have been talking about budgeting “cash” with prepaid cards. Just buy a gift card (preferably one that can be used anywhere or for the place you do most of your shopping) and only use that card for your daily activities (keep a tab so you know how much it has). Haven’t tried it yet, but yesterday was payday, so it might be time to start. Hope it helps!

There’s a huge difference between credit and debit cards; one is already your money and the other needs to be paid off in full every month. I almost exclusively use my debit card, except eating out (rarely) and tips are cash. I know exactly where, how much and what I spent down to the penny, without worrying about it. I give myself an “allowance” 2x a month when I’m paid, the rest goes to savings and bills. I know when all the bills, insurances, car registration, taxes, etc are due for the year and they’re accounted for. No surprise payments, and if something comes up, I’ve got money set aside already.

So this way is great if someone isn't good at budgeting but if someone is, it's better to use a credit card, you get rewards, build credit, and there's insurance on your purchases. You should never buy anything on your credit card that you can't immediately pay off, and if you pay it off as soon as you spend it, then you don't pay any interest. Essentially it's like a debit card with rewards. Just something to think about if you know you're not going to overspend

If you have trouble budgeting and paying off the credit card every month. Maybe. But what I tell everyone is if someone charges $2000 to your debit card you have to make the bank pay YOU back. If someone charges $5000 to my credit card Visa has to make me pay them. Since that will cost them over $1000 in collection costs, I am much more confident I will be safe. Whereas forcing the bank to give me my money back will cost me to hundreds or thousands. Also remember if someone charges $1 to your debit card and you don't catch it, and 91 days later charges $5000, the bank may have a nonfrivolous legal defense. The theory is the $5000 theft was preventable had you reported the first theft. Oh and for this reason for the love of ... the thing of your choice... read your bank statements every month. Don't assume your savings is safe because you aren't spending it. Fortunately I have never had a card stolen. I had a $2300 dry cleaning bill once due to the clerk accidentally hitting too many zeros. But that was it. But I know people who have had it happen 3+ times to them. Related. Paying my credit card bill every month forces me to acknowledge and review it. Thus how I noticed the dry cleaning bill. With a debit card I might have missed it. Although when I used to use cash regularly I always printed the balance statement for my checking and savings every time I used an ATM. So I hopefully would have noticed.

Something that can help if you impulse purchase by nature is keeping the bare minimum in your everyday account and lock up your savings. I cannot make withdrawals or purchases from my savings. The money has to be transferred over, which gives a little moment to think about what you are doing. You don’t have to have a lot of money in the bank to benefit from this. It’s about hanging on to what you have.

Same! I put everything on my credit card (some expenses require the debit though 😒). I treat my credit card like a debit (barring emergencies…then I get cash back while waiting to access my emergency fund) and pay off in full every month.

Everybody sites that study but wondering who they were asking or when it was done. I know it doesn’t say it applies to everyone but still find it weird. Like the supposed studies about typed vs written notes 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ but with prices in many stores taking the cost of credit card transaction fees into consideration I feel like you end up paying more in cash. Especially when you’re not taking advantage of cash back perks with cards. Plus i feel safer using my cc as opposed to debit card or cash. So credit cards all the wayyy lol But of course whatever works best for each Indiviual!! This was very insightful!

If you’re trying a pay-in-cash challenge and you’re in a situation to only pay by card- do you have a suggestion on what to do with the funds you’re holding in your hand if you want it to “feel” like you’re parting with it? Put it in a literal piggy bank? Force yourself to deposit it in a back? “Pay yourself” so you have the feeling of parting w it and then use that money in a future week? Would like to know suggestions.

$100 for a week would fill my fuel, leaving me with $40. ☹ Does not work for people who live outside of metro areas. Cash is easier to keep track of, but not always optional. Try keeping a journal of all purchases with you. Fill it in as soon as you walk away from the register.

As Tiffany states people who have problems overspending with cards then do this. Since we pay off our bills in full, the rebates are a benefit to us which we apply to our statements. We begrudgingly use the Costco Visa which has good percentages on restaurants, travel and gas. Unfortunately it’s structured that you only get an annual “check” back. Still it’s about $500 a year for us.

It still feels really rude to use cash at the moment (my perspective) in Australia. There are so many more businesses who insist on card only and I shock everyone else when I do whip out the cash lol. Pandemic changed how we pay forever here I think. I've taken to getting out a certain percentage of my weekly spending money in cash, & I use my card only. The goal is to save the cash at the end of every week, & that's how I've gotten around the no cash payments issue. I'm more clever with my debit card now because I really want to have all the cash left every week 😊

I don't feel like this was valuable, because it didn't feel like any significant effort was made to really stay under budget, so what's the point? If anything, the message here seems to be that if you can't pay for stuff with the cash you have, eh whatever. Not exactly a challenge. Seems like it would have made sense to make card purchases impossible for the week except for true emergencies.

I would encourage everyone to use cash more often. Moving to a cashless society is a really bad idea (personal opinion). Also Doing this for a longer period of time and using envelopes for each category is nice because some weeks you simply need less of one category. It can then roll into into the next. Then at the end of what ever period you are doing it for, you have a really good idea of what areas you need to work on. Plus there may be a nice bit left to add into savings or a splurge!

I think I would go crazy if I had to use cash. I am very lucky to be financially supported by my parents, but it scares me so much realizing how hard they need to work to afford my life. For me as a college student, anything above $15 feels expensive, so paying “normal” prices (even with saving money) for groceries per week and other expenses in cash would make me feel absolutely awful. If I translate the currency of my spendings from dollar to my country’s currency (I’m international), it would get even worse.
