Yes yes MIJ ANYTHING is great, but I hate how these days it’s so hyped up like it’s everything that matters. You see a guitar ad and first thing it says “MIJ” as if nothing else matters. Cmon...I’m not gonna overpay for an old guitar in a horrible condition just because it was made in Japan..!

That's sorta kinda true. If not for the Epiphone brand Gibson would have folded and sold it's machinery years ago. Also you have to remember when Mr. Les Paul invented the "Log" he was working with Epiphone not Gibson as a matter of fact Gibson rejected him outright at first. So you can say if not for Epiphone there would be no Gibson
@tomford8286
@tomford8286 3 жыл бұрын
Well, let's see; Gibson owns Epiphone. And Gibson told Epiphone to stop building these because they were better than the Custom Shop Gibson's. Hmm? Are you sure it's not a Gibson? Sure sounds like Gibson is in control. So I say, it's probably a Gibson of sorts. Was Orville by Gibson a Gibson? Just made in Japan? I think so.
@nathanglass512
@nathanglass512 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomford8286 The epiphone pickups are not the same quality, neither are the tuners. I get you can replace those with Gibson's and have much money left over, but to equate Epiphone with Gibson is just to protect your own insecurity for owning an Epiphone, because you can't afford or won't pay for the real thing. They feel different in the hands as well, its not just different sound quality. Also there's the Chinese thing too, 16hr a day slavelabor for $3/hr x 6 days a week. Go try the real thing and you'll see, hear and feel the difference. And you support American jobs.

@@nathanglass512 Nice set of assumptions. Wrong of course. No insecurities here little man. Not sure how you got China in the equation, but they have ZERO to do with the Elitist. I own many guitars including a Gibson Les Paul and an Elitist. The Elitist is far better build quality. I also have 2 Korean LTD EC1000's and both of my luthiers told me the LTD's a re better than what is coming out of the Gibson Custom Shop. My Carvin SC90 is a better build than my Les Paul. And my USA PRS S2 is a better build than the Gibson. I hear the build quality at Gibson is getting better. But Gibson lost me several years ago. I was a die hard Gibson guy. But then things changed. Gibson's are over priced and they under perform. That is a bad equation. And now you know ...

The elite epiphones, are great guitars, made with high quality. I’ve had a elite Casino for about 20 years, back in the 80s I had a 67 es 330 , but traded it for another guitar, always regretted that. So when I saw the casino elite at Guitar Center and tried it, it sounded and felt like my old Gibson, I grabbed it, and it’s been a great guitar, I would never sell it, I’ve got a few real nice guitars, but I always seem to grab my Epiphone!

@@jeremyrafuse5330 I still have a copy of the UK Guitarist magazine which reviewed the Epi Elites in early 2003. The recommended retail price in the UK was around £1400 but at the time a new Gibson LP Standard would cost around £1600 so despite the quality, at that price point most buyers would choose Gibson over an Epiphone branded model. In the end sellers had to discount them heavily to move them. I got my Elite LP Standard Plus for £799 around June 2003. Quality-wise they were excellent with some of the features on a par with Gibson Custom shop and Historic models - long neck tenon, bone nut, real abalone neck inlays and original ABR1 mounting instead of studs.

@Dan Snyder OK... It comes from a play on word story about a count in medieval times from a country, at war with a neighboring country. The count was a very powerful and influential person in his country and knew the war strategies that his country was planning. The count was captured by the neighboring country that wanted to know the secret plans. The count refused to reveal the plans. So, he was given an ultimatum. Either reveal the plans or be executed by beheading. The count refused. The count was brought out to the chopping block and the executioner stood over him with his hatchet. Still the count refused. The executioner lifted his hatchet and said, "One more chance, Count, will you reveal the war plans?" "No", said the Count. "I will not" The executioner said, "OK, Count, No more chances." And as the executioner started to bring the hatchet down, the count yelled out, "OK!!!! I will talk." But, alas, it was too late. The hatchet came down and the count was beheaded. So, the moral of this story is... Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken."

I've owned more than 2 dozen Gibson instruments in my day. Never had a problem with any of them. I learned early on what to look for and what signs tell me that the guitar is a good buy vs one that isn't. Most players don't know how to do this. This is why so many players complain about Gibson guitars. Sure, Gibson's QC has slipped over the years. But, that fact doesn't relieve a guitar player of the skill of knowing what to look for when buying any guitar, not just a Gibson. Most players just walk into a music store, pick a guitar, plug in, play a few "forbidden tunes" and based mostly on that, decide whether or not to buy the guitar. And then when the guitar turns out to have issues, they blame the manufacturer. A lot happens to a guitar between the time it leaves the factory and the time it finds its way to the wall at Guitar Center or some other music store. A lot of it not good. I once had a guy complain that his Les Paul was a POS because it wouldn't stay in tune. He asked me to look at it for him. Turns out he had no idea how to properly string a guitar so the strings were slipping. I showed him how to restring the guitar, gave it one or two other minor tweaks and the next thing you know, he's happier than a pig in poop. I had another guy complain that his $1,700 Les Paul custom with P90's didn't "sound good." I asked him to describe what didn't sound good about it. He sent me a picture of his amp and pedal board jammed with no less than 12 pedals. The amp was a 30 watt solid state Crate circa 1992 and the pedal board had no less than 3 OD pedals, 2 distortion pedals, including a Boss Heavy Metal Distortion Pedal, flanger, reverb, chorus, phazer, compressor and delay. Curiously, there was no tuner pedal. So, I had him come to the store where I worked, plugged his guitar into a properly setup Fender Twin with an Ibanez Tube Screamer and that was that. Problem solved. Incidentally, he bought the Twin and the tube screamer the next day. Moral of the story is this. Yes, there are guitars out there of all makes and models that are not well made, Gibsons included. But, not as often as some think. 9 times out of 10 when the guitar is a problem, its usually operator error....either the guitar was not set up by someone who knew what they were doing and let's face it, not all employees at Guitar Center or your music store know how to set up a guitar; or the player simply didn't detect the problems with the guitar before it was purchased because he didn't know what to look for. Yes, guitar manufacturers such as Gibson, Fender, PRS, Ibanez, Washburn etc, all have a responsibility to provide the best QC possible, especially when they're charging the prices they're charging for these guitars. But, the player also has an obligation to know the instrument they are playing and what to look for when buying one. By the way, Gibson and Epiphone absolutely, most definitely do not shop for their materials at the same store. With that said......... Cheers. :-)

When a “standard” model costs more than $2000, there really shouldn’t be issues with quality control. The amount of Gibson les Paul’s I’ve noodled on in guitar stores in the last decade have had some of the shoddiest, half assed setups with sharp fret edges and finish blemishes that it’s astounding. Some gibsons are great, but when you’re dropping 2, 3, even 4K on a brand name, you shouldn’t have to talk about quality control

As a big fan of Epi's (have a 1993 standard cherry burst and a 2003 dark grey to black burst Special Edition) this video was fantastic. That and I could have listened to your finger pick all day. Really nice!

Hey Darrell. Hope you're doing well and staying safe. I just now saw a Video of yours. The Schecter Solo II. This is the first time I've seen your name. I immediately went to your YT Channel to find out what you're into. I Subscribed very quickly , dude. Great Videos covering exactly the gear I'm currently researching to make a few Gear Decisions that the Wife hopefully won't flip out over. LoL. Ok , anyway , love your Channel. I'll probably go thru every one of your Videos in the next few days. Cheers and stay safe. 🎸🎸🎸

Watching this video reminded me why I will never sell my 2 oldest guitars. Both were "budget" guitars made in Japan in the early 80's. Both are still like brand new. One is a Squier Strat and the other a Yamaha SBG200. Both feel, sound, look and play incredible. Will never part with these amazing Japanese guitars. Would love to have more like them!

Darrell, I recently found one the regularly Gibson style headstock, which I like better than the tombstone (which is not terrible), I love this guitar and for the money it's hard to beat.

Another excellent demo. Yeah, when it comes to guitars I never say 'never'. hahaha. I just purchased a Gibson SG Modern and it's truly fantastic. I have a variety of Gibson, Fender, PRS and Gretsch guitars. They are all quite nice. I hope that you are staying healthy and warm in Canada. I'm in Detroit and it's a bit 'narly' down here but we're doing the best we can. Yes, Detroit is NORTH of Windsor Ontario. I think we're the one large town that's north of Canada. haha. Be safe. Good luck with the Canadian hockey teams this year. I've got the Red Wings...so........
