Gustoc takes a percentage of those dropped runes every time you die within the castle before killing godrick so when you pick them back up that percentage is missing. When you take the secret passage he’s also the one who locks you in the room with the knight guy and as a cool Easter egg you can actually see him tailing you from the shadows when exploring certain areas of the castle. He is important for a certain optional quest line but if you’ve already done it or don’t care it’s really better to just kill him. If you kill him and then take the secret passage you won’t get locked in with the knight

Say what you will about the zero-death meme being ironic, but he actually put a lotta time and effort into this. He did autistic amounts of research and planning and then executed everything perfectly. Sure, he used some cheap tricks, but he beat the game without dying in less than 3 hours to top it off. He also didn't even use summons or some of the other far more op abilities/weapons that the devs were practically intending for players to use on certain bosses in the first place.
