The stunning Georgian mansion in Berkshire that has graced the screen in Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, and Pride and Prejudice.
Basildon Park is a splendid example of Georgian architecture located in the heart of Berkshire, England. It was built between 1776 and 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes, a wealthy businessman who made his fortune in India. The estate showcases the typical Palladian style popular during the Georgian period, designed by the architect John Carr of York.
The house’s history reflects the fortunes and misfortunes of its various owners. After Sir Francis Sykes, the property passed through several hands, which often reflected the changing tides of wealth in Britain. During the 19th century, the estate faced neglect and was even used as a billet for troops during the Second World War.
A turning point in the estate’s history came in 1952 when Lord and Lady Iliffe purchased the property. Recognizing its historical value and the dire need for restoration, they lovingly restored Basildon Park to its former glory. They filled it with fine furnishings and art, eventually bequeathing it to the National Trust in 1978, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Ruth Mott, the remarkable cook in the BBC series "The Victorian Kitchen Garden", worked at Basildon Park in the 1970s and 1980s. I've seen pictures of her in that fabulous mid-century kitchen, which is wonderfully out of place in the midst of the Georgian house!
