Im still on episode 5 so you may already know this but a good way to declutter the ship design screen is to set any unused ships to both manual and obsolete. You could then go to your fleet templates and change the frigates section to use that specific variant, so for frigates instead of latest design by role it should be latest design for fast frigate. Blasters are great until the AI gets to reactive armor. The way the math works turns blasters into a decent but not great weapon after that point.
