Due to the fact the Russian subs had to surface in order to fire their missiles the Harpoon was originally designed as an anti-submarine missile, which makes the name make more sense. When first tested it tended to just fly through the sail and not detonate, so they added the pop-up feature to overcome that. After the Russians developed the technology to fire while submerged the Harpoon became the anti-ship missile we know today.

EMCON isn't like silent running; missiles are so much faster and it's way easier to find you on the open ocean than in the depths tracking the sound of your propeller. Your radars are your eyes; once you are detected at all, turning them off is like fighting blind.

A Quick note about the Echo II boats. I do not believe that they are capable of launching all 8 missiles at once, and even if they are, it was certainly not doctrine to do so. The doctrine was to fire a salvo of four, and follow up 12 minutes later with the remaining four.

IIRC, Echo II cannot guide all missiles simultaneously; you need to fire and wait for the missile to receive its mid-flight guidance/or find its own target before firing another one, but that's the old Echo II; newer Echo II (presumably in this video) should have updated fire control.

I really loved the animations in the missile launching, how the canisters opened them and launched the missiles out. And I do believe the islands defenses can be neutralized easily if the two Russian ships just launched those long range Cruise missiles at the safe distance, though I believe you are also reserving it for naval targets but unfortunately the only things present on those Islands are patrol boats, and it's waste of missiles to be used against them.

Why’s chek lap kok filled in? The airport wasn’t constructed until a bit after the game’s timeline and it should’ve been two separate small islands.
I said this below in a reply to a comment, but I want to repeat it here: I almost would prefer playing his game like we did Harpoon from a map screen, and just zoom into the ship when it comes to damage and launch animations. While the imagery is great, its really a distraction from conducting the fight. I mean its very nice to see these beautiful ships, but its making it harder to actually fight the battle I think. Take War on The Sea, you have these levels to view the ships, but in reality you launch from a map, and can actually spend most of the battle in the map screen.

There's no point on going emcon after shit gets real. There's no point in going emcon at all, unless the ships are outranged. Check intel. Going emcon means a ship will be within an 180° area of probability based on max speed, not a big deal for a couple radar homing missiles. If the simulation takes that into consideration, firing a homing missile that way is fair game. It looks like it may just be doing that. Mind that every sensor has a max range. The game gives you an ellipse, nothing will be at the far end of it. This is combat in the missile era, you don't want to be fired at. Ships have a nasty habit of presenting broadside. Just don't let it happen. we all know that presenting broadside is a terrible idea. Everything here hit by a missile is broadside. This is a game flaw, i think, because ships present broadside to fire guns, which are abysmally ineffective against missiles. There is no good place to take one of those, but astern will always be the choice. Definitely not the bridge. Or broadside.
