@@Lauren72382 it makes sense though. To date, they haven't generated any real profit despite increased turnovers. They're still operating often in the red. That makes for a very risky proposition. If the investors give money, there's no guarantee they'll see any return and that they won't have their money in limbo for an undetermined amount of time. It makes a lot more sense to wait until they've found their footing, showed they're successful, and THEN invest a solid amount of money in order to take them from "profitable" to "hugely successful". It's just how investments work.

Does food in Europe always have a "best before" date? Here in the US the only date is the expiration date.

@@squalltheonly It's pretty much the same thing, but split into two categories (at least in the UK). Best before= long life food e.g. cans, snacks, bread, quality will decrease with time, but not safety. Use by= short life food e.g. refrigerated stuff, will become harmful if eaten after the date. It's illegal to sell food that's past it's use by date, but not best before dates. This is rarely done in shops though, it usually goes to landfill even though it is safe to eat. That's my I like companies like this, it saves me money, and reduces food waste.

my family ran a brick-n-mortar business like this in the early 2000s selling past expiration and items with damaged packaging at big discounts. Margins averaged between 60 -80% depending on the supplier and the business was easily turning over 60k a month in profits. Its closed now, since my uncle passed and his partner went legally insane and ran it into the ground. Impression i got is they haven't figure out the supply channel. There are many retailers that are happy to pick up some extra cash on goods they cant sell.

Yes and no. Most starting businesses fail. If they invested in every business that had a chance to succeed they would run out of money. Of course they will invest in a business that is already succeeding if the valuation is favorable because that means they make money for sure, but they do take calculated risks. Just not wild nonsensical risks.

Best be for just means that after that date the food or drink won't be as good as be for that date. Where you need to keep a really good eye on date is the use by date normally things like milk,meat have use by date as it can make you unwell to the point of death if its really past use by date.

I'm surprised people purposely buy best before food over fresher food from the supermarket but hey it seems to work and it's a good idea. I will say I don't think the website looks very good and professional

What a shame. It's a fantastic business idea. I remember that I went to a little shop that sold out of date food n drink and I loved how cheap it was. I bought loads of drinks a chocolate. I wonder if it was one of theirs?
