Never been fully out but I was sparring with a new (at the time) guy at my judo club once and he got this insanely tight cross collar choke on me while I was passing. I usually tap early to avoid having a sore neck for the next week but with him being new I really fought hard to get out of it. After about 10 seconds of hand fighting/trying to complete the pass everything got real quiet and derknest started closing around my periferal vision. I tapped just as my vision went completely black and thankfully he let go straight away. Pretty dizzy after, lots of little spots in my vision, but otherwise I was back to normal in about 30 seconds. Closest I've ever come to the abyss lol

Maybe you need to have 'the talk' with Ben. 😉😂 I mean the first guy I choked out, I didn't realize I had the choke deep enough until he was out. And the few seconds he was out felt like a long time. I felt so bad that I'd actually hurt him, when he came to, I was so relieved I pretty near kissed him on the cheek. 😉😆😆 Ben my dude, if you do read this, tap before you nap. Save an anxiety riddled training partner the stress of worrying about you. 😳😉😂 As for your question, I haven't gone unconscious, but I was pretty quick to tap if I was caught and didn't see a way to escape.

I went out, full stop, from a bow and arrow choke in a roll. My collar was on my chin at first, slipped under, and I remember thinking "it's not that tight" before waking up on the mat to a very surprised training partner. I was completely fine and bump-slapped because the round still had four minutes left, but the dude was super unnerved because he legitimately thought I just died. It's happened a couple other times over the years, and it's always been on me for not tapping to try and fight out of something.

I've never gone unconscious in class, but I've seen it happen. The higher belts I roll with nailed it into my head to tap early.
@jinxit
@jinxit 2 жыл бұрын
I never went out (I tap quickly) but a brown belt at my gym did a controlled RNC on me once (basically pressure only on sides, so it didn't actually hurt at all, so I could focus on the "experience") since I wanted to see what it's like. I tapped when I started to have a sort of tunnel vision (grayish areas outside central part of vision). It made me extremely euphoric just afterwards, and I instantly understood what bdsm choking might be about :-). Actually this reminds me of a tangential question I'd like to ask you Tyler: does your style guillotine work as well when right hand is the choking hand? I think every single of your quillotines I've seen was done with left hand choking. I'm wondering if there's some anatomical subtlety which would make it easier to pull off on one side.

For your QOTD, I almost got choked out once from an inverted triangle a purple belt put me in (like the one Masvidal was put into. I started having tunnel vision and tapped out. As you said, I felt extremely lethargic for the rest of the day. In regards to Ben, I think it would be cool that either you or Brock have a conversation with him. His spazzines is one thing, but not tapping from chokes or submissions could be detrimental for his health and longevity in the sport.

I was put in a triangle and tried to fight. He tightened it up a bit more and it was the tightest triangle I’ve been in. Gave a light tap and he didn’t feel it. Tried to tap again and then the next thing I know I’m breathing super hard and am wondering why my coach isn’t telling me to get up. I felt like I opened my eyes and my coach was wiggling my legs. Not scary or hurt at all. Felt like I took a little nap. 👍🏽

In 2015 I was on vacation in NYC and trained at Unity for a week. Awesome experience training with big names like the Miyao bros. Anyway on the last day, just before leaving I asked Murilo Santana if I can get a photo with him, which he obliged to. The last photo he asked me if I wanted a "jiu-jitsu shot" which I said yes to. He put his arms around my neck, counted 1-10, and put me to sleep. It was not an aggressive choke at all-- more of like a fun initiation to visiting students. I woke up and a bunch of the students were clapping. Put a huge smile on my face. Great experience

I went out to this MMA fighter/BJJ blue belt during my first 6 months. I passed his guard but it was a trap for a no-gi baseball bat choked. I thought if I passed his guard, there was no way for him to safely finish, which was correct, but I never addressed his hands, and just kept going into it, while he was turning away to finish. I tapped just in time but when he let go I collapsed and came to in a couple of seconds, dazed and confused. Lessons learn haha.
