I really like the concept! This isn't just about teaching a ML algorithm what a gas station looks like, but its actually learning something about the way that photographers actually perceive these scenes and what we decide to capture as a combined consciousness. I saw a photography exhibition a while ago with one of these weird films created by an AI, except it was provided a training set of different species of flowers, and the algorithm created images that obviously were of flowers, images of flowers that don't exist. It reminds me a bit of platonic forms, that its somehow capturing what the 'essence' of what these objects are

Love the morphing petrol stations. And the soundtrack. Minor quibble: in actuality the system is creating images, rather than « taking photos ». I think that the technique probably being used is a neural network [a form of machine learning, which is a branch of AI {Artificial Intelligence} and more specifically an example of « deep learning » For more info see the Wikipedia entry « Artificial Neural Networks », part of a series on Machine Learning.
