I've taught swimming and treading water for a long time and I also use your "do nothing drill". It really teaches students that for most people if you do nothing (i.e. - simply hang in the water with a little air in your lungs) you will not sink to the bottom. Instead you will simply float usually with your mouth and nose just slightly below the surface. Hence to tread water you only need to kick with legs or push down on the water to lift your body about 2 inches up until the mount and nose are above the surface. And for most tipping the head back will also accomplish getting the mouth and nose above water enough to get a breath. The "do nothing drill" is a great method that gives the student huge confidence. And permission to stop and do nothing for a bit if they get tired.

Irena, we all float differently, in the video you show yourself floating on your back horizontally aligned with the water surface - you have amazing buoyancy! When I float on my back my body hangs straight down vertically, only my eyes, nose and mouth are out of the water, just barely- I have almost no buoyancy. When you teach others how to swim or tread water you have to realize that learning these skills is SO MUCH EASIER if you float! I don't think many talented swimmers understand this since swimming has always been easy for them due to their high natural buoyancy. Thank you for your videos.

Do you breathe in a lot of air before going?

I've watched many instructional videos on KZbin to learn how to tread water better and this is by far the best video I've seen. Thank you! What happens when your arms and legs get tired? Do you just revert to the do nothing drill? Or just switch to float on your back? Also, how do I prevent water from getting into my nose? That's the part I hate the most.
@irenaanna2 ай бұрын
Love to hear that! When you get tired, I'd switch to floating on your back, but practice treading water with using arms and legs as least as possible. Water shouldn't be getting in your nose if you keep your head above the water, if it goes underwater gently breathe out through the nose so no water gets in, you can also get a nose clip if it gets too annoying!

this is my like 10 th video on how to tread water. I still cant do it. I keep panicking in the water and forget to be in the seated position . hence I will try the do nothing drill first then proceed from there.

Can you teach how to move fast in water with legs only and without hand movement, my friend can do it but I'm not able to do it, also can't find video on youtube.

look up eggbeater kick tutorials, this type of kick is stronger and you're may not need to use your hands

Im still scared of deep water, if I keep air in my lungs, when do I breathe out and do I inhale inmediately after so I dont sink?
@irenaanna3 ай бұрын
Ideally, you should be breathing normally, relaxed like when you're walking, that comes with practice. Having that air in your lungs helps you float, so breathe out and back in quickly, that's a good starting point. When you breathe out your body will go down a bit, unless you offset that with a harder kick or arm movement.

This is a bit weird to me, I can swim confidently and tread water, but I cannot put my nose underwater without a nose clip or breathing out continuously! If she is such a beginner, how the hell is she just holding her air back without getting water up her nose? That's the hardest part for me! Even when I concentrate on breathing out, I keep messing it up if I try actually swimming underwater, and then I get water up my nose.

@liquiddarknessvi2 ай бұрын
also you shouldnt need to move yout hands in the downward nothing to get your head up, you're head would already be up, otherwise you're not treading water you're just drowning, I've never once done a downpush

Ahh an infamous comment warrior I see. Maybe post your own vid to show us mere mortals how to do it “the right way”?? I’d loveeeee to see how awesomeeee your way is!! She is teaching beginners how to tread water. Not everyone is as amazing in you. Let her teach her way.
