The system will be sized to your needs. $71k is outrageously expensive and a rip off. For a $200 monthly bill, system should cost approx. $12-14k, less with Fed & St rebates. Payback period should be 5-7 years. Keep in mind that rates will gradually increase over the years leading to a slight shortening of the payback period. Some states have very generous tax credits. If you have optimal conditions ( southern facing unshaded roof in an area with the highest elec. rates with somewhat mild summers/winters) it’s a no brainer and will increase value of your home when buyers learn they will be paying $13/month elec. bill.

When you allow a solar rep to view your bill they are looking to see your usage so they can design and price a system based on what makes sense for your home's energy needs. There isn't any information on your bill that anyone can misuse, at most someone can use the information to pay your bill lol. If a company or sales rep gives you a system size before even seeing your bill, that can be a bit shady as they are giving you information that is not the most accurate for your home. If they don't analyze your usage they may sell you a system that is either going to underperform or overgenerate for what you need which can ruin the savings solar is created to provide. Most solar providers can send you free no-obligation packets that can show you the savings for your home and system cost, along with the kW size and how much electricity the system will produce annually. This information is key to making sure the system is accurately designed, if your total current annual consumption of electricity is covered by the system's annual generation, then you have a fairly designed solar system for your home. If the numbers don't match close to your consumption, then you need to ask why, if the sales rep can not give you a straight answer do not sign with them. What you can ask for before sending out your bill is information about the solar provider, like how long they have been in business, specific credits and incentives for your area, and the kind of warranties they provide on their panels (the industry standard is 20-25 yr warranty on panels and 10 yr for labor). Ask about other concerns you may have about going solar as well, like maintenance and the effects it can have on your roof (some companies may provide an additional roof warranty!). If you get good straight answers and the rep seems knowledgeable, then you could and should show them your bill. At the end of the day, the technology is about the same throughout most of these solar providers (unless the price is suspiciously low compared to the rest), what really matters is the company you are choosing to do business with as they are responsible for your warranties and installation. You want to have a company that will be in business for those 25+ years because a warranty will only be as good as the company. I am an independent energy savings advisor, I help homeowners in CA save money on their electricity through energy efficiency programs and help them compare solar proposals and do the research for their area to help them make the decision on what solar provider to go home with.

Panels today have warranties for efficiencies of 90% for 10 years and 80% for 25 years, and then they don't just die at 25 years, so you either have very small power needs (and you need to reduce the number of panels being installed) or you are underestimating the lifetime of panels

The (now 30%) solar tax credit is a "non-refundable" credit, meaning, it offsets your tax liability UP TO 30%, and will even allow you to extend it up to 5 years worth of tax returns (until the 30% is reached or the 5 years is up, whichever comes first). My local solar rep says "if you qualify, you can get up to 30% tax refund" and left it at that, told me to check with my tax professional. (I am a tax pro, so I knew what I was up against) Also, if you do the loan, there is an escalation clause, where after a set amount of time (Usually 18 months) the monthly payment goes up if you do not fork-over the full tax savings towards your loan. Much better to go with a "green" bank loan. (if you qualify). I've heard about sales people saying "you can take that tax credit and use it for a vacation/cruise, etc" but doesn't talk about the escalation. Some retail energy providers (REP) do not buy back overproduction, some do it at wholesale costs (and this amount is subject to change as the REP sees fit). To be fair they weren't misled at all and this investigation just gave the company an excuse to fire the sales rep and steal his commissions. If you don't pay any taxes at all, why would you think you qualify for a tax credit? Even without the tax credit you just take a low interest loan and pay that instead of your power bill. The tax credit makes it cheaper than the power company.

I use to do solar, you are just repeating your sales pitch.
@hanklohan2 жыл бұрын
You also have to get a radiation meter to see if the solar panels produce dirty energy. I know people who have headaches from the panels. The sales people are just repeating the sales pitch, but most are not product experts.

@martinwhite41810 ай бұрын
$71,000? You could install it yourself for about half that. $35k. The tax credit is now 30 percent. That would be $10,500. On a $35k system. Now you are at only $24,500. If you only pay $2000. in taxes per year, then a $10k tax credit would mean you don't pay taxes for 5 years. Also, to get the tax credit, you have to own the system. If you lease or otherwise don't own it, no tax credit.

I don't know the second company, but what I know of Pink Energy would have me running from them. Still, this is crappy reporting, IMO. Like a utility company is going to give tax advice 🙄, or asking them for advice should be recommended 😬. Also, you can collect the credit accross 5 years of tax liability, not just a single year. A good subject to report on, just a poor job getting the facts straight. Personally, I think, disabled vet or not, anyone signing a contract (particularly one potentially decades in length and involving tens of thousands of dollars) should read and understand the contract. If they aren't capable of that, they can't be bound buy it. If they are capable, and they get blindsided, they should only be blaming themselves.

Also had a great experience in Washington State. U can actually take the federal tax credit over a 3 years. Also If u are working u can increase the number of exemptions so u have little or no taxes taken out of each check. This can allow u to take full advantage of the tax credit in one year. Work with ur tax preparer to see what number of exemptions to take.
@shawnrobertson99012 жыл бұрын
That only works if you make enough to owe a tax bill. If you have never had to pay a federal tax bill you are unlikely to take advantage of it. If you make enough to pay a tax bill you likely are wealthy enough to not have to deal with these shady companies.

"absolutely" is reporters response to question of asking if it would be a good idea to check with the Utility company if you can quality for the tax credit. 4:30 Meanwhile, the solar company is not a tax advisor, but are we somewhat lead to believe the Utility company is? Maybe slightly. A 2nd opinion at best. Sure - do your homework but don't expect the Utility company to review a contract which might restrict energy sold by them. The words, the exact words are important, which is why I reacted negatively when I first listened to this story and played the tape over and over. I've calmed down but it is so easy to hear what you want to hear. If you don't know what you signed, oh oh. One homeowner owed much more then in this story and the contract had to be transfered when the house was sold, hence preventing the house sale at the time. Dieing is not an escape from some contracts (so it was inferred / implied elsewhere) nor buying out the contract.

I would say the big problem is probably because these people financed all this stuff. If they actually had 90k dollars sitting on their dining room table and any sales comes up to you and says I would like to take all that and invest it for you into solar panels, I can guarantee you that the vast majority of people would do their due diligence to make sure everything passes the sniff test. When things are financed, people don't see the ultimate cost of what they're paying and what their liable for. Same thing goes for college. Here's 120k dollars sitting on the table for you. I'll take all that and in four years give you a genders studies degree. I'm pretty sure most people would say, "hmm...let me think about that for a second...."

@@bill.clifford.59 first step is to talk to your solar lender & see if they charge for a refinance since I’m guessing you are past your automatic reamortization after 16-18 months depending on the lender. After you figure out the fee for doing so. Contact your CPA to verify the information I’m telling you is true. But you can pull from your IRA & avoid the taxes that would typically be charged because the withdrawal via the Solar tax credit.. if you are under 60 you will still be charged the 10% penalty & the tax credit won’t cover that so keep that in mind. After you make that withdrawal you can apply it back to the Solar loan & drop your monthly payment back something more affordable for your situation. If you don’t mind $345 then you can save the tax credit for a time when you might need to pull from your IRA due to something happening in life unexpectedly. Keep in mind when you pull from your IRA its considered income for the year. I’m guessing your in a low tax bracket so if you want the most money from the tax credit pull out just enough to keep you in the same tax bracket & if you have to roll over the remaining tax credit into the next year & do it again.

il say never buy a long term solar installation contract especially if you plan to sell the property in the future as its most likely you will have to buy out the contract before someone will buy it and penalties will be brutal also read the fine print on insurance because if your adding a $50000-$150000 system you will have to have that added cover and tell them or you could find your home owners is void .. its projected that about the only ones a system will be cheaper for is if you can get full relief and pay off the capital within 5 years every one else there is over 90% chance it will cost more and that relies on it working for 25 years .record everything if in doubt ask hear is the big one if they don't want to be recorded there is a reason and 99% of the time your not getting the truth

Companies market solar to max profit, as expected. They capitalize on the “green energy” campaign. This hype, hikes the price. For these reasons, solar for your home will never be financially sound. Therefore it can’t reach middle Americans. Only those with excess cash.
