Leo Vince is best pipe. most expensive, but baffle pipe which means no repacking. sounds amazingly better than stock without being obnoxiously loud like the rest.

I went straight to the horribly expensive pumper carb with 3x3 airbox mod. Completely transforms the bike; adds a lot to low end, and has instant log-jumping response. Seat Concepts took care of the seat. Big tank from IMS improves the range. Race Tech fixed the forks, the rear suspension is still stock, and still sucks. 16t sprocket for road use allows tingle-free speed up to just short of 80mph, necessary for staying up with traffic here in Sacramento.

I want the pumper carb...but I just have so many other bike projects going on...I think I may just do the $7 mod first. Definitely need a seat...I can't ride this thing more than 80 miles without being miserable lol. Big tank from Acerbis for me, I'll use RT components to fix my forks for sure. Thanks for info!

If you havent replaced your carb all ready there are great cheap things you can do to achieve crisp throttle response good idle and some minor power increase. Removing the snorkel from the airbox lid only, remove carb, add a shim to the fuel needle to slightly get more fuel, do not use any after market needles just shim the stock one, drill out the bronze plug on the bottom to access the idle air fuel mixture screw, there you will find most dr650s are leaned all the way out! I put an add on adjustable fuel screw on I could adjust it without a special tool or removing the carb again from procycle. You might be able to get away with one size. Bigger main jet. But you dont need it. Lastly adjust your throttle cables to get all that loose dead movement out. Test ride. Play with idle mixture to achieve best power/ fuel economy. Trust me, this really transforms the bike and costs almost nothing compared to the alternative.

@@mxgryan nice let me know If you have any questions when doing it, also I will add, that it's the perfect time to replace throttle and choke cables if there not silk smooth, and lastly, most likely the screw / nut that holds the choke cable in the carb is original, its plastic known for cracking and letting air suck in= run poorly, replace with a metal one! Can be found on procycle.

I did the above and mine runs great. In Ohio, mine would barely start it was so lean. Went through the carb and ordered a replacement needle with clips to make life easier. There was a KTM now discontinued (LC something?) that had the Mikuni BST40 carb. Look up “BST40 Bible”.

Those are the same things I did to my DR650 and it now it runs perfectly, no need for an expensive carb or other parts. Especially nice was upgrading to the adjustable fuel/air screw.

Just a little time getting the jetting right on that stock carb and trust me it will run flawless. Also try putting a lighter spring or simply cutting one or two coil off the diaphragm spring and this allows for quicker response when you twist your throttle.

Remove the gas filter from the gas hose and install a gas filter just in middle of hose cut in half

Check out your fuel tank vent lines. Mine was routed over the shock somewhere and had kinked causing a vacuum in the tank, starving the carb. I used some zip ties to "round" the hose again, and problem fixed.

Our 2002 DR 650 had been modified " Carb Jet Ninja's " ... I put it back to stock and the bike runs great ! Have one question for all the modifying guru's .... You think you know more about building motorcycles than Suzuki ? LOL ! 😁

I wouldn't modify the suspension. I swapped mine out for a cr500 shock and rm 250 upside down forks. Worlds better than stock components. Plus a 41 fcr pumper and fmf exhaust. Im trying to decide between high compression and a big bore kit and cam. The big bore doesnt have high compression option though.

Yeah I would really appreciate the extra speed and I would probably find myself disappointed with a 250l or 300l speed. Do you have any complaints or concerns with the bike just test riding it? I really would like to test ride one but the dealers in my area dont do test rides ☹️

Got a 96, thinking about changing the stock metal tank to a plastic cause I rebuilt the carb it ran fine to the gas station and once I gassed up it went for awhile then just was dying out backfiring etc.

Oh heck yes. A LOT more power than a KLX250 or XT250 or CRF250 or 300. If you've never ridden a big-bore single before, you will probably love it. Lots and lots of big torque.
