Zach is taking the Chevy 2500 3/4 ton truck on our MPG loop to see just how it does for highway driving efficiency. We realize folks use their trucks as daily drivers and it's great to have a baseline expected highway efficiency figure to plan fuel budgets, so that's what we provide with this test! Let's see how well the 6.6 Duramax V8 sips fuel in our 70-mph highway fuel economy test.

Very impressive fuel mileage from the Duramax in an unburdened Silverado 2500HD. Quiet and well appointed for such a beast of a truck. Thank you, Zach, for a cool video!

I have a 2022 2500 custom model gasser. Although I do have diesel envy, I'm so glad I didn't buy one. I go 10 miles to work, top speed 40mph with I've lost count on how many stop lights, 14.5mpg every time. 17 to 20mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 70mph. 8.5 to 10mpg towing our 9k lb. camper with the cruise set on 65mph. No I don't have 900plus lb/ft. of torque. But I've never needed more then the gasser has to offer. If I was towing anything over 14k lbs I would definitely get the diesel for it's torque. But anything less I feel is a waste. Gas is 2 bucks cheaper, no DEF fluid, lower maintenance costs, lighter with a higher payload. Diesel costs 10k more right out of the gate. When you run those numbers, it only makes sense if you're using it to do pulling almost everyday to try and recoup the upfront costs. We will see how the 6.6L gas does longevity wise over time, but with an iron block, forged crank and rods. It should stand up to the test to time for almost everyone. Oh and I love the 6L90E transmission, smooth as silk and never runs above 185' when towing our camper in 95' weather. To each their own, I have diesel envy because of the torque, but in all honesty, is it really needed these days for most?

I have the same truck/powertrain. Once the engine starts to break in, fuel economy will improve. I routinely get 21-23mpg on the freeway. Around town, 16mpg is about average. Pulling our trailer (just under 11,000lb) I can average around 10mpg.

I get 18 to 18.8 mpg at 70 mph from My 2007.5 LMM DURAMAX Crew 2500HD (so same truck config). Locker is it's ruining 35"x12.50"x20" Mud Terrain tires. Oh and it's got 365, 000 miles on it. Only a 6spd Allison 1000. I'm always thinking I'm supposed to get better mpg but I get what he got here driven the same way and I do the division of GPS or ODO miles driven on Pumped gallons many dozens of times (I tire 30,000 miles a year with it). Not it's not sure accelerating at all and tows > 13k up the Appalachians like it ain't even back there. I guess she's still performing pretty well.

Take a look at the specifications on the Volvo trucks or even all the new semi trucks in high gear. They’re almost idling the engines 1100 RPMs versus years ago returned 2100 RPMs, all the time the difference in fuel economy and how long the engine last.

A question I don’t think it was discussed. I missed it if you did. What gear ratio were you using? I know on Ford the F250 equivalent of this. Do you have a choice of 3.31 axle 3.73 and 4.10 all of these focus on whether you’re going to pull all the time or run around town with obviously the 3.31 axle ratio will get better fuel economy because the engine turns less, I would appreciate it. If you could add these numbers into your equation, give more insight into the vehicle. What it’s designed for obviously they’re all for towing but some are for lighter towing another’s and fuel economy. Does change the different axle ratios. Also, you can get into it final drive ratio of transmission axle ratio and revolutions per mile all these come in to play. I think it’s a very fair comparison if we know axle ratio to axle ratio between the different brands. Also, this is something else missed most of the interviews and tests. I’ve watched as someone who has bought and run commercial trucks axle ratios are everything. I.e. a truck hauling air freight semi runs light all the time versus a heavy haul truck. Both trucks are denticle, except one will have heavier frames and heavier springs higher gear ratios, numerically.
@jamesglavich1426
@jamesglavich1426 Жыл бұрын
I guess only GM can answer why, but the only ratio with the 10 speed Allison/Duramax is 3.42. I would like to see an option too. I think that going back to the 3.73, like the 6 speed Allison/Duramax would be a good choice, but they take away that choice.
@isx530gary
@isx530gary Жыл бұрын
@@jamesglavich1426 yes you also need to take in consideration the overdrive ratio of the truck 10 speed. Also the lowest gear ratio. I’ll reference so Mack trucks they would use a .62 overdrive run 4.88 final drive your ratio. This is the formula tire revolutions per mile times transmission overdrive ratio times final drive ratio this would give you the engine speed at 60 miles an hour. There’s also another formula involved which I cannot remember that calculates. Great ability. Which is the tire revs per mile transmissions lowest your times final driver showtimes another math number that I cannot remember to complete the calculation. From what I know what I could be all wet hair, but when I was buying and ordering my own trucks, the rule of thumb was your gear the vehicle to start it’s rated load on his 14% grade for the engine idling.

I might be mistaken, but I think GM Trucks are the only vehicles GM doesn't actually design to Kill you. Sure, they might have Disintegrating Wheels, Peeling Paint, Faulty Lifters, etc., but by getting a diesel truck from GM, it might actually be the one.
