Is the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 6.6L Duramax Diesel L5P a good engine ? I review this Chevy 2500 with the Duramax Diesel as a Heavy Duty Mechanic and give you guys my opinion of this engine. Should you guys buy this engine over a Cummins 6.7?
I hope everyone is having a good week! I got the pleasure of driving a new 2022 Chevy 2500 HD with the powerful 6.6L Duramax diesel in it. And I'm excited to tell you guys all about this engine.
so right off the bat. GM had many issues with their past Duramax the LML including a lot of DEF issues and DEF pumps failing. NOx sensors failing. but most importantly they had massive fueling issues because of the CP4 fuel pumps failing. thankfully GM had completely upgraded the fuel system and after 5 years of real world experience is seems to hold up very well.
The next good thing about this engine is when it came out in 2017 GM really beefed up the internals. the block was re-enforced, the crankshaft is forged and thicker. the rod journals are thicker. the pistons are stronger so lots of good stuff there.
the other great thing about this engine is the lack of emission related issues. modern diesel love to have tons of issues with their emission systems but GM has managed to really make this emission system work well and that's a great thing for engine reliability!
now some issues about this Duramax diesel engine.
the first thing is the MAP sensor issues. thankfully this is a very easy fix and anyone can do it. basically the MAP sensor becomes clogged with EGR soot and therefore can't properly read the amount of air going into the engine. the best way to deal with this is clean it with MAP sensor cleaner and it takes about 5 minutes to do !
the second issues if the #4 injector issues. the connector for whatever reason fails and causes a misfire. the best way to deal with this is to get a gold plated connector and that seemed to solve the issue.
the third issues has to do with the DEF headers in colder climates. no real fix here other then replacing the part unfortunately
the fourth issues is when it comes to engine tuning! these ECM's on the Duramax L5P took year to crack and therefore if you want to delete these things they are expensive!
Anyways guys I hoped you liked my Review!

I’ve been extremely pleased with my 2002 Hd Duramax 21+ years as a landscape contractor towing dump trailers , excavators using it daily in tough conditions. Outside of a warranty replacement of the injectors and two small transmission repairs one water pump and 2 idler pulley replacement . I haven’t done a thing . 320k

Yea GM really did well with the gmt800 and it's only being revealed now that these trucks miraculously outlast Toyotas while offering themselves as a potent tool for damn near any professional. And they simultaneously make crisp, artwork-like pavement princesses for the folks that enjoy building show trucks. It's a class act from GM at a special time in history for diesels.

@@Alexbuilt *than Toyota. Yea I've driven plenty Toyotas. The GMT800 Duramax trucks are at least as reliable as a Toyota. But Toyota doesn't make a truck that can pull 25,000 pounds. Difficult comparison. My 05 Prius is my everyday driver. Had an 02 Silverado 2500hd Duramax but I had to sell it. I'll definitely get another one as soon as I can justify it and if I have the cash. As for Toyota trucks, I have no need for a truck like that. They just can't do much. A brand new loaded Tundra barely tows as much as my abandoned 97 Ford work van with a v6. I'd rather have a car from Toyota.

I like this deep dive format way better than TFL etc, even though those can be somewhat useful too. Very well done review. You may be interested to know that for 2024 GM has reworked the duramax to put out 25% more power at low rpms. I like the cummins too, but its about time somebody said "enough" to the peak torque games and focused on real world, usable towing power and fuel efficiency. I'm not pulling 25k+ pounds. I'm pulling a heavy-ish RV or whatever, and want great towing power and fuel efficiency.

Thank you! I mean I love the TFL boys they do a great job and in their defense they aren't mechanics so this stuff comes a little easier to me. I have heard GM is cooking up something for 2024! it will be interesting where they get the power from. it's only a matter of time before Duramax, power stroke and Cummins all offer over 1,000 lb-ft of torque which is a little crazy because like you said it's all about the driving experience at the end of the day.

Those guys at TFL recently purchased a no frills basic RAM 1/2 ton 4x4 and were showing it in a video. They had the hood open and they pointed to the rack and pinion steering and said it was the front differential and the tie rods were the half shafts. I'm not kidding find that video and watch for yourself. Are you going to take their reviews seriously?

Appreciate all the thoughts here. I have a 2015 LML ~170k miles which I converted to a CP 3 Fuel pump. Very happy with the engine, repeated DEF issues as you noted. Glad they seem to have gotten it right on the next generation. I think one of the strongest points for me on the GM diesel is the Allison Transmission, seems completely bulletproof with stock power. It shifts great 170k miles in. As a combo they work great together. Not sure about the upgrade to the 10 speed, but have not heard of a lot of problems.

You make a good point about the Allison. Dodge fans can't shut up about the Cummins engine quality, and I agree it is a legendary engine. But the entire package around the engine is trash. Duramax/Allison on a gmt800 is like almost too good to be true. And the LB7 ousted the 5.9 Cummins far as I'm concerned because the fueling system on the duramax is a common rail, direct injection system. That's equivalent to saying the Duramax uses fuel injection, while the 5.9 Cummins uses a carburetor. There is no real comparison. Fuel injection tech blasted carburetors out the water and continues developing today (have a look at the 3.0 liter dmax). The Duramax common rail has gone largely unchanged since its inception over 22 years ago, and Cummins and Ford eventually adopted common rail too. They knew if we can't beat em we better join em 😂 🛻💨

Thank you so much for going through MY 2021 and YOUR 2022 ( 6.6 Duramax) I was in Love with mine as soon as I saw the Diesel Engine and the 2 back bed side steps. FORD did NOT start doing that till 2023. I have ALWAYS owned FORD Pickup's. But this 20 year trade, looked hard at Cummins, it was the Miles on NEW used Dodges. On my Ford's always a GASSER engine. The 2000 had the V-10. Rented a 5 Yard Dump and went up a hill with that V-10 in F-600 So,so SLOW. I completely understand why FORD did this big Gasser in Fleet trucks, it was for emissions on Propane conversation. What a huge difference pulling my 7000 pound boat, with the two different brands. One being a F-250 and the other my new baby, the 3500 Silverado I have always been a FORD truck guy my whole life. This Silverado reminds me of my wife's parents'CADDY as far as the driver seat ride.

From what I understand Ram is upping their encryption on their ECM's now. So deleting might not be less expensive anymore. I have owned 3 different Cummins... 04.5, 07.5, and a 15. I liked my 15 other than those 3.42 gears. They were awful towing. A shift towing my camper up a hill and you would swear the transmission and driveshaft would be left there. I ended switching to a '18 L5P. I am still loving this truck. It tows my camper so much better. In fact I now tow tandem with a SxS behind our tow hauler camper. There is no way I would have done that in my '15 Ram. Maybe my older Ram's since they had 3.73's, but the brakes probably wouldn't be happy. Biggest thing with the Duramax vs the Cummins is acceleration especially towing. It was down right scary trying to pass on a 2 lane road. The L5P just gets up and goes. I have been known to never own a vehicle for very long... 3 years max. I am almost on year 5 with this truck and have 0 plans to switch out.

As for cost per mile to operate costs less per mile to operate then the cummins or powerstroke. When you use these trucks to operate a business you keep up with cost of truck and the cost per mile to operate that said truck.

I'm trying to understand the tuning part... do you mean about $5K to "de-emission" the truck and tune it to run, or $5K to bypass the computer to allow a chip and more tuning? My only experience with a diesel truck was a 2004 Dodge with the 325/600 Cummins pre-emissions. A very good vehicle then for towing a 5th wheel toy hauler, and now I'm shopping/considering options for a new rig setup. Thank you, and Merry Christmas! Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL

I love the truck and I was thinking about disconnecting it from the intake and running down the side of the engine. One of the mechanics at the dealership told me it would possibly throw a check engine light because it won’t be able to work right because of that oil separator that is on top of the valve cover. It needs the suction from the intake to make that system work properly, so I never did it.

Based on my personal research on the big three and diesel engine choices I did choose the L5P (2021 3500HD). The Ford 6.7 looks like a good engine but Ford's use of the CP4 was a deal killer for me. RAM's transmissions put them in the number 2 spot along with RAM's poor overall build quality (my opinion). I appreciate you giving an accurate description of the L5P. GM ran the CP4 for years and Cummins is currently using it. It definitely sucks if it fails but this is another case of internet hysteria. But just for safety sake you can install a bypass kit. They are like $300 and they divert the fuel back to the tank so it gets filtered and contamination can’t get to the rail.

Great video. I am somewhat surprised that turbo Variable Guide Vanes are just catching up with todays vehicles. I'm a commercial aircraft mechanic and have been for over 35 years. Compressor variable guide vanes have been in play on jet engines since the late 70's early 80's to this day. Why it took so damn long for someone to make a cheap ass turbo do the same thing is beyond me...jet engines use fuel pressure to adjust those variable compressor vanes, but electric works too. Why did it take so long for known technology to catch up? Gas or diesel.....doesn't make sense to me. People act like it's some new technology.....nope....been there many years in other industries...

If they are two different technologies, this truck does not use the type you mentioned and "surprised that they are not catching up with today's vehicles ". But a variation has been tried by Honda and Porsche has been using it with a few generations of consumer vehicles.
