Petrolatum is actually safe for your lips/body. (Vaseline, anyone?) It seals and forms a protective barrier so your skin doesn’t dehydrate, but it doesn’t actually provide any hydration.

Petrolatum or petroleum jelly is Vaseline and it’s a harmless and effective occlusive - it also has a high melting point ! I use coconut oil (25g) beeswax (10g) and Shea (5g) to make a natural lip balm that truly sticks and conditions (feels like Burt’s!)

Luckily, the way she presents the information in this video is actually super misleading and incorrect, petroleum jelly is perfectly safe to use on your lips and is widely recommended by dermatologists, especially because of the low allergy risk! I only started the video but I gotta say I HATE the packaging. What's all that plastic for? Why is the box so big? The actual products take up like 1/3 of the packaging. I understand that it's probably for marketing purposes or sales, as bigger packages are more likely to be sold/noticed, I guess. But I feel like I'd just go back and return it and find a kit elsewhere after opening that.

Your lotion is awesome. I have some sort of eczema or psoriasis on my face and it burns and stings when I have a flare up and your lotion calms the pain and hydrates the skin so well that the loose skin that's not ready to separate is very well hidden. Thank you and lots of love

@@lindsayf9225 I just started using a product I found called Psoriasis Honey. It's kinda pricey for a balm, but it has worked really well. I have yet to try it around my eyes where my psoriasis loves to flare up (my eyebrows have dandruff 😝), but it has kicked ass on the other places I've applied it to. The company sells other products like a serum, but I held off buying that until I was sure I liked the honey. They did send me a free bath bomb though. Anything with beeswax seems to soothe and healmy flare-ups. Now I'm interested in Katie's lotion too. Anything that can help!

Yes, but beeswax and coconut oil are also SUPER good and not too expensive and more natural. I make beeswax and coconut lip balm for my kid. Yes, she's now 11, but I've been making that balm since she was 3. Our local natural foods store sells both REFILLABLE tubes and pots. I can also get LOCAL beeswax from them. Um.... Google beeswax lip balm for a good microwaveable recipe ;-)

And while I get using contacts for filming, I found that large goggles will fit over my glasses no problem! I've been skiing, I've made soap, I've been to both 3D and IMAX movies - it's all doable!

petrolatum is the same ingredient they use in vaseline or other petroleum jelly products, it has a melting point between 38 and 54 degrees celsius (depending on the components, since its a mixture of hydrocarbons which have varying melting points depending on how long the molecule is), which is why is doesn't melt with only a little bit in the microwave, and definitely explains why it's not a part of the instructions

Well, lip balms basically need to be non-toxic/edible even. So, yep, you usually use flavouring oils to give scent to lip balm. Food flavourings usually need sugar or a liquid to actually taste, unless they're mixed with either of those things, they'll just smell

First very cool video Katie :) Second: As a commenter a little bit lower commented Petroleum is actually save to use (when it is refined) on skin and lips, as vaselin is made of petroleum with a quiet low melting point.Although if you use it too often on lips, they will dry out much quicker, because they got used to the constant applying of lip balm. Vaselin and petroleum is inert when you put it anywhere on the body, that is the reason it is used as lubricant and a component for non-stick wound dressing for example. If anyone is interested, these are the properties of the other components in the lip balm base: Polyisobuten is a ingredients used to make gum. So it helps to increase the viscosity (as far as I could find). Studys show that it is non toxic. The melting point is above 80°C in some cases. Glyceryl stearate is an emulsifier which is used in a lot of cosmetics and can even be used in as "natural" labeled products. Microcrystalline wax is made out of petroleum and is inert to the human body. It is a very common base for skin products and pharmaceutical skin treatment. Synthetic wax could be a a few different things. It could either be Cetyl Palmitate a lipid often used in all kinds of cosmetics,or FT-wax which are synthetically made extremly stable wax variations. Considering how it did not melt when Katie put it in the microwave, i would guess the latter, because FT-wax is considerably harder to melt and is often used in lipsticks to prevent them from melting to soon when using them in higher temperatures(regulation of melting point). Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in cosmetic. However this is the one ingrediet I do not like in this base. Sure the others are quiet cheap materials but they are in no way harmful. Phenoxyethanol can cause an allergic reaction (as most preservative but tis is more likely to cause a reaction) and if consumed in large quantities can be toxic for the liver (mind you most preservatives are already effective when a very small quantitie is used, so I doubt that even if a child would eat the whole container, it would be dangerous). Why they not used a saver, more allergy friendly alternative is unclear to me. Also this base does not contain any water, so I am not sure why they would even need a preservative . Formulas which contain no water can not be a breeding ground for bacteria, because bacteria need moisture. Maybe they wanted to be "extra save", in case the emulfifier "traps" some moisture,dunno. Sorry for the long text!

I'm not sure if you say this further in the video or not, but I think the measuring device in the kit is the scoop they mention Like do five scoops with that and then mix with the teeny spatula
