I've always thought it would be fun to create a "NYC Tea" with famous NY and American classics. Like mini bagels with cream cheese and lox, mini rye bread Reuben sandwiches and pigs in the blanket for sandwiches. For the middle I would use American biscuits instead of scones with local jams and cheeses. For sweets, mini black and white cookies, little pumpkin pies, Tollhouse cookies, etc. I'm probably not going to be buying a hotel or restaurant, but I would definitely ask you to be the pastry chef in my fantasy tearoom.

See, this is what an American tea should be. Unfortunately, what I’m not sure Grace realizes is that we don’t really have an American custom of Afternoon Tea. All of the tea services she’s looking at in the video are English afternoon tea services, that we Americans are just taking reference from. I think she wanted to find something more like what you are describing, which would be very cool!

I went to the Langham in February and had COMPLETELY different sweets. These look incredible! I also had the gluten free afternoon tea and would recommend! They tried to make everything the same as what my mum and sister had. And they brought a massive cake for her birthday!! We kinda loved how the staff left us alone, there was no pressure to leave at all and we just drank tea and chatted for ages. Everyone around us did the same thing! Also would have loved another cheese scone lol.

My favourite afternoon tea ever, which totally changed my opinion of them was in The Cotwalds called The Painswick Hotel they made all the food in their kitchen there. There was pork pie without any of that gross jelly stuff and the best coffee and walnut cake but the scotch eggs were the best, giant scotch eggs that were warm and you could tell they were freshly made because the yolk was still runny in the inside, like how is that even possible in a scotch egg? Also they had super comfy lounge chairs in front of a log fire which the staff maintained they had a games room for kids too with board games and a pool table. I don’t think the afternoon tea was even that expensive either.

For anyone visiting San Francisco, California, I highly recommend Lovejoy's Tea Room for a more down-to-earth, cozy afternoon tea with a more savory-focused menu and mismatched china (think Grandma's parlor vs. grand hotel). I'm obsessed with their egg and onion sandwich with hints of capers, and the scones are lovely and come with proper double devon cream. (Some tea places in the U.S. try to pass off grotesque "substitutes" like cream cheese mixtures or fast-deflating sweet whipped cream as "scones with cream," which is a travesty!!) The full-size teas come with a tiny but delicious shortbread biscuit, and optional petit fours and/or truffles can be purchased separately. I'm convinced the mini portions of balsamic-dressed greens and coleslaw they include help keep me from falling into a food coma after such an abundant, delicious meal, and it remains one of my favorite tea rooms ever.

My favourite afternoon teas in London have been Fortnum & Mason and The Savoy. Just outside central London, I'd recommend Petersham Hotel. Get a table by the window. We went in December and they even poured out fake snow by the window and it was lovely. You get a view of the Thames and Richmond park. Also Pennyhill Park hotel does wonderful afternoon teas. Again, try to get a table by a window. The hotel grounds are lovely and the food was super delicious.

Nice video, you really don't hear much about afternoon teas in America, was interesting.
@erikhughes84122 жыл бұрын
We, in America, don't "do" an afternoon (or "high") tea. What we have is the Coffee Break, with weak coffee and donuts usually, or with a piece of pie and a cup of coffee at a diner (like in the American TV series, "Twin Peaks"). Many Americans pick up what they call a "snack" at a fast-food drive through on the way home from work (generally a burger, fries and drink or some kind of dessert) to eat before Dinner is ready at home. Any "afternoon tea" in America is, for all intents and purposes, an English Afternoon Tea.

You're forgetting, afternoon high tea isn't a thing in the US, whatever you do find is technically based on British high tea, even if it doesn't look it to a British person. And it might be weird to say this, but it honestly has to do with that whole Boston Tea Party thing and the over taxing of tea sent to the colonies before the US was even a country. It was legitimately that bad that it permeated to the whole culture of the country to avoid anything having to do with learning the etiquette around tea and stuff like that. It eventually came back in style in the 1880s or something, maybe a little earlier, but only in the upper upper class, and it was still based on British customs. In general, US culture is so far gone/removed from this part of British culture, that if you happen to see high tea being offered in the US, it is in no way "American" high tea, because, again, it doesn't exist. We never really developed these customs of taking something in the afternoon like tea, or l'heure goûter, or fika. And if you do see it currently in the US, it's considered a slightly "exotic" European thing that's done for fun, but it's not a custom in the US.
@whatevs2362 жыл бұрын
I doubt she’s forgetting it. It’s a known thing, particularly in Britain, that afternoon tea/high tea is a tradition here and definitely not in America. I think what Grace was implying was that she was looking for America’s take on a British tradition, not that America themselves have afternoon tea regularly or it’s a part of their culture and way of life.

Please come back to the USA and try Afternoon Tea at the Plaza Hotel, it's the best in NY. And in Southern California the best Afternoon Tea are Rose Tree Cottage And Tea Rose Garden both are in the city of Pasadena. I'm a Southern California girl and treat myself to Afternoon Tea at Tea Rose Garden often, the sandwiches and tea are perfection. The scones are not as good as Rose Tree Cottage, but you won't be disappointed. Take care!

@Pink Pyrex Thank you for sharing your favorite tea spots! Have you ever been to tea at Huntington Gardens in San Marino? I just learned they are reopening their tea parlor in the spring, and I am so excited! - I had a not-great experience at the Tea Rose Garden (my waitress was in a mood and it must have been an off day for the kitchen), but I would love to try Rose Tree Cottage someday! 🫖 If you ever come up to Northern California, I highly recommend Lovejoy's in San Francisco for a more savory-focused tea in a cozy grandma's parlor kind of setting. They have cute mismatched china, tasty scones with proper double devon cream, and optional petit fours or truffles for dessert. I am totally obsessed with their simple but to me delicious egg salad sandwich with capers and tiny bits of shaved onion!
