I decided to go ahead and purchase a track saw. Was tired of fighting a straight edge clamp that would shift when I clamped it. I was on the M18 battery platform, and the was a sale for the M18 track saw, included a 55” track and track clamps. Got it in, and I am very happy with the purchase, Adjustments, riving knife, etc.

You should really try the 40v Makita track saw. It has a kickback function and has replaced the 18v version imo. One battery, one charger, less weight, more power than dewalt, longer battery life, better design, and the 40v Makita platform is starting to expand, making it worth the investment.

I've had a Wen 7&1/4" corded saw for a few years. At the time it was the cheapest track saw around. Thought I wouldn't use it too much, but I've ended up using it A LOT. Built two kitchens with it. Running it on Powertec tracks it works fine for breaking down sheet goods. I'm perfectly happy with it.

The tools are very much starting to exceed corded tool performance in many instances 36v 40v and even some 60v performance compared to corded is very much surpassed whats available in plug in offerings. I never thought such a day would come but it very much has. Heck high torque impact greatly surpass their phnematic counter parts . I would have not believed it if someone had said that a makita 18v would out perform in every way my trusty old saved many a day Mac ugga dugga!

I'm leaning towards a corded one, probably Kreg or maybe the plug in Wen. My brother just got the corded Wen and has been pretty happy with it, and it's a lot cheaper than the Kreg. I have Ryobi tools and have been pretty happy with them. I'm a little disappointed in the reviews of their track saw though. I'm also hesitant to get a tool in a different battery platform, so I'm thinking a cord won't be that big of a deal and I should just do that.

This is a fantastic review and I think you really got it completely right. The big 3 are at the top for a reason. I have an erbauer which is almost a carbon copy of the triton ( just a different colour) and I get some fantastic cuts from it. No issues and I find it very accurate , but it could b better. If I could justify the price I would buy Milwaukee. At work we use various Milwaukee tools ( grinders, nut guns, drills , impact drivers, saw-saws , battery grease guns and impact ratchets ) for the past few years now and they have proven to be bullet proof. They have been dropped , partially driven over , submerged in water and been left outside in all types of weather conditions....but they never break or fail. I'm looking to buy the Makita soon , as I think that when price is considered it is without doubt the best bang for your buck on the plunge saw market. And the reliability is very close to Milwaukee. A lot of tradesmen that I know are now turning hair back on Dewalt. Their reliability and usability issues are becoming a bad reputation for the company. A major fall from grace in the recent years.

For years I saved and saved thinking of buying the Festool track saw. Then... Milwaukee has a track saw.... and everyone has a "decent" track saw offering. I went with Milwaukee since I already have Packout and M18 batteries. Then again, I also have Systainer as I do have a Festool sander and a Festool dust extractor. Ah well, I love the Milwaukee track saw. It adjusts accurately, it cuts precisely and it has decent storage and works with accessories. Thanks for doing all this work, Matt. Your videos are great at explaining the details that are so important in these tool purchase decisions.

@ogwoodworks
@ogwoodworks 7 күн бұрын
Strongly agree. I also have the Bosch and it is a beast. Powerful, accurate, and great dust collection. The guide rails are also excellent and they have the best track connector of any system. In his defence, the Bosch TS doesn't get a lot of love in the US and Canada because Bosch does a terrible job of marketing it here. Bosch/Mafell is very popular in Europe because they actively market and support the product over there. It's also much harder to buy aftermarket accessories compared to Festool, Makita etc. because companies like TSO completely ignore Bosch. Fortunately European companies like Benchdogs make great accessories for it such as rail squares, rail hinges and parallel guides. I've never understood why Bosch doesn't market their track saw system better because they push all of their other power tools quite aggressively in North America. Any Bosch reps out there listening?

It's fun to watch a video about the best, but for me the best one is the one that works for me in my shop... So far, loving it as it speeds me along my project and I can break the sheet goods down quickly. I tried the circular saw and the table saw can't make the cuts safely if I'm by myself... Fantastic saw and I'm using it almost all the time now.

I'm a DIYer and really liked your review. I live in Australia so power tools are much more expensive. The lowest priced locally available track saw is AU $229. But it looks inferior to the Grizzly, Our Ryobi system is $499 for the basic with 1400mm track. The Makita 18v x2 (skin only) is AU$845. I run that Makita and love it. This is a fair review (finally!). The Milwaukee did not exist when I bought mine. If I were starting from scratch, I think Team Red would just barely scrape out ahead of the competition. Go with whatever battery platform you'd rather be on. If you have both, go with whichever is on sale. The Makita goes on sale about every 18-ish months at Home Depot. I suspect the same will happen with the Milwaukee.

Milwaukee makes good tools(unless you get one of the couple models of impacts that kill themselves right out of the box) but their batteries don't last. My OG Makita LXT 18v drill and impact driver are over 10 years old and still using the original batteries from over 10 years ago, and they still outperform the Milwaukee batteries. All the other guys at work are team red and they go through batteries like crazy and I've never had a Makita battery go bad, and I've got about $8k worth of makita tools and batteries.

I bought the Milescraft track saw kit. I like it a lot. $99 plus $79 to expand the track out to 110 inches. I originally intended to use the Ryobi 5.5 inch cordless saw that came with my tool kit. While it would have worked, the saw was pretty small for the saw base. Picked up a 7.25 inch Ryobi brushless saw at Direct Tool Outlet for $89 and I'm much happier. One of the tracks in my kit that was shipped from Amazon was slightly out of spec so it wouldn't join with another track perfectly. It was only about a millimeter off but it would have created problems with the saw sliding. Milescraft support immediately shipped me a set of two new tracks. Impressive.

First of all great comprehensive view of track saws. I have two track saws and I am interested in the Kreg saw because it cuts in the opposite direction (for cutting stair skirting to risers - probably the only time I will use this feature) plus the corded Kreg is easily adapted to the CT dust extractors. As far as dust extractors go, I will always recommend the Festool CT MIDI I, easy to transport, already has BT and easy to install the $50.00 BT switch.

I've had the cordless Festool for about four years now, and it is a great tool, but if I was buying now, I'd go for the Milwaukee. For one thing, I prefer a riving knife over Festool's new kickback protection mechanism. Paradoxically, I suspect you're going to get more kickbacks from which you need protection with the kickback protection system. You can't really go wrong with any of your top 3 saws, though. They're all much better than what you could get when I started out.

I ended up getting a Ryobi because I found a deal on a refurb from the factory for under $200. As you pointed out it has some flaws, but I use it mainly for breaking down sheet goods and as a makeshift table saw when I just don't feel like loading mine in the truck. Overall, it has done what I needed but if I were still working, I would spend the money for the Milwaukee.

@@sociopathmercenary I standardized on Ryobi as well, and wish I felt the same way. The more I learn, the more it seems that Milwaukee doesn't make Contractor-grade tools. One big difference (for me) between the Makita and the Milwaukee is that the Milwaukee uses only one battery - So all things being equal, I don't need to bring a double charger (although I do have a Milwaukee double charger, came with my mower) or two more batteries if I'm doing a simple remodel. I can bring one battery in the saw and one in my bag, if I really need it I could toss in the single port 18v charger. So that's quite a 'bulk' savings, imo. You didn't say much (anything) about the tracks of the 'big three'. I bought a 55" Milwaukee from a local big box, got another free when I bought the saw (with the free clamps). I bought the connectors and one track was thicker or wider than the other. So even before the tracks were joined, the saw slid well on one track but would not move on the other. I don't know how common that is but it eliminates the ability to use the two tracks together. Long and short, I called Milwaukee and they sent me a 106" - So now I have two 55's and the 106! I considered buying the Makita track, but in the end I lucked out and I gained the anti-tip which would be lost with the Makita track, but I lost the transportability of using the two 55's for longer cuts. The Milwaukee is priced lower (349.00?) than even a corded Makita, if you have the batteries and use Makita track you have a pretty well priced kit.

Based on your's and other woodtubers recommendations I have been absolutly impressed with how clean the Milwaukee is/has been. One specific note to mention, there are a number of people who complain about it's "non-standard" arbor size (20mm). They litterally use this complaint to drive the saw down because they can't run cheaper/alternative blade options on it. Which fair enough, the problem is I believe this was a very specific and calculated engineering FEATURE to prevent injury. The 20 mm will make you less likely to use blades whose kerf is less wide than the riving knife which could create a dangerous situation and almost garantee kickback. Futhermore, I am of the opinion the kerf is so wide because it give the riving blade more ridgitity. It would be nice to know what the caliper readout is on each with a riving knife to confirm this small detail.

As always an awesome video. I am in the market for a track saw and I’m in all the TTI battery platforms. I was surprised to see the Dewalt ranked above the Ridgid as aside from the power it sure seems the Dewalt leaves much to be desired. What I’m curious about is if you could get either the Milwaukee or Ridgid and money was/is a thing to be concerned about, which would you pick? Bare in mind I’m just a home gamer just getting started in woodworking.

The primary reason I bought the Festool is the anti-kickback sensor. I am a DIYer so I don't use that tool that often and stupid can kick in and this is what that function is for: to protect myself from stupid. It has done that job on numerous occasions since I bought it about 2 years ago. My Festool track saw did come with two chargers so both batteries can be charged simultaneously. I don't have any other Festool products and I don't care about battery platforms. I have a lot of Ryobi 18V tools, as well as Makita, and one sole DeWalt tool. I buy the best product for me and platform figures very little in the decision making.

I recently purchased a makita track saw kit. Its a nice machine, cuts are very smooth. I was slightly disappointed with max depth of cut. Also, you have to be very careful when running your first cut on the track guide. The rubber edge on the track gets trimmed on the first cut so you need to ensure that saw runs straight and true along the whole length of the track. Measurements for cutting are made between the rubber edge of the track and the edge or line established on the material that you are cutting. Having to use the rubber edge of the track is disappointing. I purchased a couple of accessories for the saw. 1. an offset indicator to attach to the depth guide to account for the depth/thickness of the saw faceplate. 2. some 2.2mm measuring guides to account for the thickness of the blade for performing certain measurements associated with certain types of cuts. Accessories purchased on ebay.

My battery operated tools around the shop are Milwaukee. I wouldn't change that for anything, the M18 and M12 options are absolutely incredible. Nobody else comes close. That said, I own a corded Makita tracksaw. I tend to see battery operated tools as more disposable. Ask me about my Craftsman 12v, Craftsman 19.2v, and past Makita M18 Lithium tools for example. I wanted the tracksaw to stick around a bit. I use that, with the 3D printed dust insert, and my Bosch HEPA VAC090 for portable dust collection, and it's been an incredible tool. Wouldn't trade it for any other brand out there. I do wish, though, it could snap into my packout stack to travel. But really, that's a first world problem, isn't it? Thanks for the review, and love the videos!

I've used Snap On and DeWalt XR stuff that won't keep up with my M18 impact. @@andrewb4584 yea DeWalt makes pretty much all, possibly all of that stuff. You’re trying to make a mix of diversity of product, yet also state it’s better. I’m not sure if DeWalt makes a backpack bug sprayer lol. Not sure I’d really care. As far as the impact statement that’s beyond laughable. Especially when Milwaukee is on the precipice of a class action lawsuit with regards to their impacts. DeWalt also has a 60v line. I mean if power is what you really care about you aren’t beating that with a 18v anything. Milwaukee makes good stuff. I’m sure choosing that line up wouldn’t hold anyone back. In the auto industry I’ve heard they have some unique offerings. But to act like it’s a superior brand is comical. It’s especially comically lately when they’ve been cutting a lot of corners on manufacturing and their failure/waranty rate is skyrocketing.

I have the complete Kreg track saw system (saw, track, adaptive cutting system table, and all the jigs Kreg makes for the saw). I like it. It has served me well since I bought it in July of 2020. However, if I were buying a track saw today, I'd get the Makita corded track saw. The reason is the Makita is value priced compared to other first tier brands, and it is compatible with the universe of third-party accessories made for saws working with Festool tracks. Some third parties make a version of their jigs that are compatible with the Kreg, but availability is spotty at best. Why not just stick with the Kreg jigs? Because their quality and accuracy are not up to the standards of the saw itself.

If you work only in a shop environment, then Makita or Festool systainers are superb. If you need more rugged storage, then the Milwaukee is a no-brainer and the best option. It's interesting that the Makita uses the two-generation old Festool systainer. I've had my Festool (corded, obviously) track saw for almost 15 years. At the time the only two were Festool and Makita. They were essentially the same price, so I went with the Festool. What's the deal with Milwaukee's Pack Outs? I was looking at them at the BORG a few days ago. When I opened one it smelled like something died in it. It really was that putrid. I had a Ridgid case do that too. It was a couple of years before could even use it. I haven't because it sat so long, unusable, that I wend another way.

The Milwaukee would take an edge over Makita for their storage (Makita boxes are garbage) BUT one thing to consider is that Makita caters more to carpenters, whereas Milwaukee caters to electricians and plumbers. The only exception I can see is the Milwaukee nailers are top tier. Makita has really shit the bed when it comes to their nailers which is why I decided to add another battery pack to my 18/40v Makita lineup. Got tired of waiting and am very pleased with their trim/framing nailers. They’re amazing. In conclusion, turquoise for carpenters (mostly), and Milwaukee if you’re a sparky that likes to cut plywood real nice….? FYI I have the 6.5” and 9.25” Makita track saws. They’re amazing but wish I would’ve waited for the 40v to come out because the 40v is the next level. Every 40/80v tool of theirs I have is insane. Far superior to anything out there. The Japanese just build everything superior.

Awesome vid! Just one suggestion - give the 40v makita XGT tracksaw a try and you'll find it actually feels really nice, plus it's got plenty of power. I'm an amateur woodworker and I'm scared by table saws the makita has been my main tool in the workshop and I've created a few amazing pieces with it. Comparing to the 36v version which requires 2 18v batteries, the xgt version only requires 1 battery and best part is the battery side is not sticking out of the track so if you are using it in tight spaces or you have a clamp on that side it will not get in the way.

First, before I get long-winded, thank you for your frank assessment of these saws (especially the budget variety). Most content creators "reviewing" tools would not be as forthright. Now onto the long part. I agree with your rankings of the big three, and anyone would be happy with any one of these saws, but there are some things to keep in mind that makes the choice less close in my mind. For example, extra features wise, I think the Milwaukee is at least a draw with the Festool, and MAYBE even better. Why? Because as you pointed out, the Milwaukee has features the Festool does not have such as the anti tip feature, the scoring cut, one and not two batteries, AND a riving knife. More importantly, let's talk a little bit about kickback. As you can see in the Festool simulation (or in real footage of the saw REACTING to kickback), the Festool can and will jump the track enough to possibly damage your work AND its more expensive guide rail (if not your hand). As the Festool manual states, "...kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, jammed or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator..." Keep in mind, Festool also states in the manual that "[t]he saw comes with an electronic brake. The saw blade is stopped electronically within approximately two seconds of switching off the machine." Not one second, but within two. Also keep in mind when Festool goes on to point out that "Any contamination of the feeler unit may impair the KickbackStop function and therefore prevent the saw blade from being stopped." Festool also goes on to say "A kickback while working may cause the saw to lift unintentionally. The feeler wedge [8-1] detects unintentional lifting (kickback) of the saw from the workpiece or a rail during work and triggers the quick-acting braking of the saw blade (Fig. 8a). This reduces the risk of a kickback. However, it cannot be entirely ruled out." First, up to "two seconds" (their words, not mine) is a long time. This is not to be confused with the 5 milliseconds it takes for a Sawstop to shut down and retract the blade from a body part which can still leave a scratch. And two seconds is more than enough to damage a nice piece of walnut or an expensive festool track. Like the Makita, the Festools with electronic kickback protection DOES NOTHING-and I mean NOTHING-to prevent kickback. This feature only reacts-and reactions IMPERFECTLY (if we were going to give Sawstop a 5 out of 5 stars)-to the kickback fhappening (and may not react at all as Festool points out). Contamination with all that sawdust in flying out of the kerf BEFORE it can be collected is a valid concern. The fact that the blade comes OFF the track when the brake is applied denotes risk involved to your work, guide rail and/or your body (for example, if you had a massive enough of a kickback while holding down the saw base with your hand as Sedge/Festool instructs in lieu of the anti-tipping feature found on other saws). Again, this is no Sawstop even if the same company owns both Sawstop and Festool (and even though they are both electronic in nature). A track saw would just be too large and unwieldy to engineer it like a much larger/heavier (and stationary) table saw, even one as "small" as the Sawstop CTS. I'm on the DeWALT 20v/60v platform, so I don't have a dog in the fight (or at least I didn't before making my decision). Moreover, the Milwaukee track saw is the only cordless Milwaukee power tool I own, so I could have went with the Festool, but because of everything you said combined with this realization/limitation about the electronic kickback feature, I really don't set the TSC 55 or TSC 60 et al. variants apart from the Milwaukee because at least the latter can do something (unlike the Festool and the Makita) to prevent kickback from occurring. It should also be noted that Festool still maintains the use of riving knives on their latest TS 55 (which is even newer than the TSC 55 K) along with the TS 75. None of these track saws can absolutely rule out a kickback, but the Milwaukee is the only one of the three that can actually prevent a kickback from happening because its riving knife (unlike the Festool "Feeler") can prevent the blade from pinching (which, as I understand it, is the number one cause of kickback). Yes, kickback is rare especially if you don't make a mistake (hence the Makita), but we all can and do fly on "autopilot" from time to time (similar to how I view firearms safety along with Massad Ayoob). Combined with the anti tip, single battery and scoring features of the Milwaukee, an argument can be made that with the retention of a riving knife, Milwaukee may have finally made a product that just might-for all practical purposes-one-up the closest Festool equivalent. In fact, the new Milwaukee Forge battery has been said in reviews to increase its power by about 15% (over the 6.0 High Output it comes with when purchased as a kit), and this is with using a $199 battery (that will eventually go on sale) in lieu of two Festool batteries that cost $270-$300 for the pair (depending on whether you buy them in a kit). And as you pointed out, because the Milwaukee only operates off of one battery, you also don't have to worry about charging multiple batteries consecutively like both the 18v Makita and Festool saws. Lastly, if you gave Festool one additional star regarding extra features (because it comes with electronic kickback protection), that means you should take away one star from Makita which doesn't even have a riving knife (which you gave 4 out of 5 stars in this category along with the Milwaukee). The Milwaukee does everything the Makita saw does and more as it's adjustments most would agree are slightly better and it has a riving knife and operates only off one battery. Objectively, that makes the Milwaukee the number one saw on the list in my opinion, and it does so by more than a fraction of a star for all these reasons. About the only "downside" to the Milwaukee saw is that, because of the way the tracks of both the Milwaukee and Makita are designed, there is a slight inconvenience when using the TSO parallel guide system. If someone is using the TPG guide adaptors in lieu of the guide rail squares as attachment points, you can't use the tooless viariety like the "drop on" version the Trighton and Festool tracks use (you have to use the "slide on" variety). I don't see this as a problem (and it is in fact not a problem if you use two guide rail squares); but if it ever bothered someone, they could use the Festool tracks to give them compatibility with the toolless drop on TPG adaptor. I really think Milwaukee did it right for this tool. No, they didn't innovate, but they ended up providing a more budget friendly option than the Festool while, once the dust settles, is every bit as good as the Festool.

I'd recommend to any non-professionals to just get a decent corded saw. It'll outlast any battery system in terms of power and also 'future proofs' it against battery/tech changes. It's no difference if you're using a vaccum hose anyway. Got a second hand Makita and it's razor clean on all materials including laminates. The anti tip feature is a must so avoid the Festool even if you can afford it.

Fantastic overview. Not having the exact prices in the video is a good call in the current economic climate, prices are changing every month, plus random sales and so on. People can price compare when they are ready to buy and then go with whatever makes sense since a 20% off sale can swing a decision. For future track saw content, I'd like to see added testing on more delicate sheet goods. Melamine for example, would be a good one as the brittle veneer tends to chip and flake very easily from circular saw blades. It would be a good demonstration of the various "anti-chip" technologies all the different track saws claim to have and see how good the scoring ability is.
